Time of India21 hours ago
Local and federal authorities are likely preparing for potential threats during Fourth of July celebrations next weekend amid the growing tensions between the United States and Middle East. Attacks perpetrated by lone actors are the biggest terrorism threat to July 4th festivities in New York City and elsewhere, reported CNN, citing federal authorities. Tensions escalated on June 22, when the US Military bombed three key nuclear sites in Iran, according to Trump administration officials.

The FBI, the Department of Homeland Security and other law enforcement agencies issued a joint bulletin in June saying 'the most significant terrorism threat facing the Macy's 4th of July Fireworks stems from lone offenders and small groups of individuals seeking to commit acts of violence.'

'These individuals are often motivated by a broad range of racial, ethnic, political, religious, anti-government, societal, or personal grievances,' the threat assessment continued.

The threat is not just limited around New York, but other large gatherings could also be targeted. The threat assessment added 'These individuals are often motivated by a broad range of racial, ethnic, political, religious, anti-government, societal, or personal grievances.'
'Special events with high attendance and media coverage … remain attractive targets' for domestic and foreign terrorists and violent extremists who may want to 'cause mass casualties or draw attention to their causes,' the bulletin said.
The agencies said they had not received any reports of specific threats at the massive fireworks show or related events. However, 'high-profile, large events can draw interest from malicious actors looking for targets of opportunity to perpetrate criminal schemes,' the bulletin said.
Law enforcement agencies had issued a similar warning during New Year's celebration when a driver intentionally rammed his truck into a crowd of revelers on January 1 in New Orleans' French quarter, killing 14 people. The suspect, a US army veteran who had served in Afghanistan, was killed by authorities in a shootout.

'Due to the Iran conflict, the Department of Homeland Security has a National Threat Advisory System, and as of June 22, we are at a heightened threat environment,' Michael Verden, founder and CEO of security firm The Lake Forest Group, told Fox News Digital.
'That level will stay in place until September 22, and it could be extended based on the conflict in Iran.' Verden, a former USSS agent and law enforcement officer, added that certain 4th of July activities and travel will see increased security and precautionary measures 'because of this heightened threat environment.'
DHS said in a June 22 bulletin that 'Iran also has a long-standing commitment to target US Government officials it views as responsible for the death of an Iranian military commander killed in January 2020.'

'The likelihood of violent extremists in the Homeland independently mobilizing to violence in response to the conflict would likely increase if Iranian leadership issued a religious ruling calling for retaliatory violence against targets in the Homeland,' DHS said.
'Multiple recent Homeland terrorist attacks have been motivated by anti-Semitic or anti-Israel sentiment, and the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict could contribute to US-based individuals plotting additional attacks.'
Tensions over the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza have been linked to a spate of recent violence in the United States, and authorities say similar attacks could erupt on July 4. 'Most attackers motivated at least in part by the Israel-HAMAS conflict have selected targets with a symbolic link to Israel, houses of worship, or locations associated with houses of worship. Individuals with grievances linked to the conflict could also perceive large gatherings, such as Independence Day celebrations, as opportunistic targets symbolic of the West in general,' the threat assessment said.

The DHS and FBI cited last month's firebomb attack in Boulder, Colorado, that targeted a group of demonstrators supporting Israelis who were held hostage by Hamas. Ahead of the 4th of July celebrations, authorities are also keeping an eye on the skies. The report flags the potential misuse of drones to disrupt or target large gatherings.
"Although we have no credible, specific reporting regarding illicit plans to use UAS (unmanned aircraft systems) to target the Macy's 4th of July Fireworks," it says, "unauthorised UAS operations have the potential to increase public safety risks."

‘Was always an attempt from our end': Top Pak journo on how Trump came into India-Pakistan ceasefire scene

Najam Sethi, a senior Pakistani journalist deemed close to the establishment, recently admitted on air that it was Islamabad that approached the Trump administration several times during the four-day military conflict with India read more A top Pakistani journalist has punctured the Pakistani narrative of 'victory' over India in the recent military standoff, revealing how Islamabad repeatedly pressed the Donald Trump administration of the US to get the ceasefire done with New Delhi. Najam Sethi, a senior Pakistani journalist deemed close to the establishment, recently admitted on air that it was Islamabad that approached the Trump administration several times during the four-day military conflict with India in May. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD He also hailed Pakistan's lobbying efforts in Washington DC and credited them for persuading Trump to help broker the ceasefire. Pakistan was dying for a ceasefire and had been lobbying to approach Trump for the same. India kept rejecting. Story of Pakistan's 'victory' by Najam Sethi. - @pakistan_untold — Imtiaz Mahmood (@ImtiazMadmood) July 4, 2025 'We have been thanking Trump (for ceasefire). We thanked him back then too for this initiative (ceasefire). India didn't do the same … Trump kept on saying that he brokered a ceasefire. But Modi rejected this claim and said that it was the DGMOs who got it done,' Sethi said. 'It was always an attempt from our end to keep a relationship going with Trump. And we have been successful. We tried from all ends … a lot of lobbying companies were operating. It was a concerted effort,' the senior journalist said. The admission by Sethi has once again revealed Islamabad's duplicity, as it projected a defiant stance during the military hostilities while secretly lobbying for US mediation. India has consistently asserted that its military actions were a response to Pakistan's aggression, and it was Pakistan that ultimately sought a ceasefire. Prime Minister Narendra Modi explicitly denied any third-party mediation during a recent phone call with Trump, emphasising that the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) from both sides had agreed to a ceasefire on May 10. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD India's strikes on Pakistan's air bases and its assertive naval manoeuvres reportedly marked a significant turning point in the four-day conflict, pressuring Islamabad to agree to a ceasefire. Previously, Najam Sethi acknowledged that India had effectively neutralised Pakistan's air defence systems, leaving its airspace exposed during Operation Sindoor. During a Pakistani TV news discussion, Sethi noted that the Indian Air Force's strategic drone-led attacks crippled Pakistan's defences.

Hotmail co-founder Sabeer Bhatia wishes 'adopted country' US on Independence Day; it has Indian flag emoji

Sabeer Bhatia, the Indian-origin entrepreneur who co-founded Hotmail, has once again stirred debate online with his comments about India and the United States. On the occasion of America's Independence Day, Bhatia shared a message on social media praising the US, which he called his "adopted country," while also offering advice to Indian citizens. Posting on X (formerly Twitter) on the 250th anniversary of US independence, Bhatia wrote, 'Happy 250th Anniversary to my adopted country,' adding an American glass emoji and the Indian flag. He followed this with a message to Indians, saying that India could achieve the same prosperity as the US if there was a shift in how people think. 'The way I see it, India can become as prosperous as the US — all it takes is a change in the way its citizens think,' he wrote. This is not the first time Bhatia has faced criticism for his views on India. Last month, he posted on X highlighting poverty levels in the country. Referring to India's economic pride, he questioned the celebration of being the world's fourth-largest economy while millions still struggle daily. In a post that drew sharp reactions online, Bhatia wrote, 'Instead of hanging your head in shame that 415 million people in India survive on \$3.10/day \[approx. ₹ 265/day], you brag about being the world's 4th largest economy. Shame on you.' His comments have sparked debate on social media, with many users questioning his contributions to India while living abroad and accusing him of repeatedly criticising his home country.

Insurance, tax, student loan, car EMI and deportation... who will gain, who will lose from Trump's 'Big, Beautiful' Bill? US President Donald Trump's ambitious One Big, Beautiful Bill was passed by the lower house of Parliament after the Senate. This 840-page bill, which cuts taxes and expenses, got 218 votes in favour and 214 votes against. But in such a situation, it becomes important to know what is there in this bill that even Elon Musk opposed it and incurred enmity with Trump. Two MPs of Trump's own Republican Party voted against it? How will this bill affect the rich and the poor? The most important thing about this bill is that through this, the tax cut implemented in Trump's first term will be made permanent. It has a provision to abolish tax on tips and overtime pay. Tax relief for business, there is no tax exemption on social security in this. Electric vehicle and solar tax credits will be completely abolished. Huge cuts in tax exemptions and social security schemes One of the most prominent features of this bill is the $350 billion border and national security plan. This includes $46 billion for expanding the wall on the US-Mexico border, $45 billion for arranging 100,000 migrant detention beds, and a massive recruitment drive for immigration enforcement. What will change with One Big, Beautiful Bill? Trump's highly ambitious bill talks of a tax cut of $4.5 trillion. Senior citizens earning less than $75,000 annually will get an additional tax rebate of $6,000. Social security programs in America have been cut drastically. This bill also has a provision to cut medical aid and food assistant programs for the poor. The poor will have to work at least 80 hours a month to get medical aid. Parents of children above 14 years of age will also have to work. It is estimated that after this bill comes into force, more than 1.18 crore Americans will become uninsured by 2034. This means that they will lose their life insurance plans. This bill has a provision for a new savings program for children. The government will deposit one thousand dollars for children born between 2024-28. The limit of child tax credit has been increased from two thousand dollars to 2,200 dollars. Single parents earning up to 2 lakh dollars annually and parents earning up to 4 lakh dollars will get this exemption. The bill has a provision of $350 billion for border and national security. A wall will be built on the US-Mexico border at a cost of approximately $45 billion to stop illegal immigration. Along with this, a detention center with one lakh beds will be built here at a cost of $45 billion, where more than ten thousand immigration officers will be recruited. Along with this, the government has also cited the expulsion of more than one lakh illegal immigrants from the country every year. America will build its new air defense system on the lines of Israel. It has been named Golden Dome. A proposal of $25 billion has been made in the bill for this. It is estimated that the cost of this entire project can reach up to $500 billion. Apart from this, a proposal has also been made in this bill to spend $21 billion for ammunition and $34 billion for the naval fleet. The bill provides for tax deduction on interest on loans taken on vehicles manufactured in the US. This will benefit those buying new cars. But electric vehicles have been excluded from this.
