Atif Riaz, CIO/CTO, Murphy Oil Corporation: Besides general productivity use cases, one novel use case for my team was utilizing AI to pick high performing teams for different projects. We already had the personality assessment data, and AI helped us figure out who might be best suited for certain roles on a project. Of course you always have to watch out for hallucinations. AI has huge potential for building better teams, but you have to set boundaries.
Randy Volkin, CIO, Perry Homes: It's not important that every step forward has to be an innovation. There are a lot of commoditized tools and practices in AI that we are adopting that can make us better. There's a sense of shared exploration across industries right now, especially at the corporate level. If you can tap into that, you can make a real difference without high degrees of risk.
Ashok Kurian, AVP of Data and AI Innovation, Texas Children's Hospital: HIPAA has very rigid rules about data, but we're further along than many other healthcare institutions. We have many examples of AI uses that improve care, reduce administrative overhead and ultimately allow our world-renowned clinicians to spend more time with patients and patient families. That's why people come to Texas Children's Hospital, we explore every avenue to ensure our patients are treated with the best possible quality of care.
Jeff Green, CIO, Strike, LLC: We use AI to speed up risk assessments on bids. That process used to be a six-week, five-figure engagement. Now we feed the info into our AI model and get what we need in a fraction of the time. That frees up time and employee resources to go fix problems rather than just diagnose them, and it has reduced our legal cost. Everyone's happy about those benefits.
Keith Tomshe, Manager of Digital Video, KHOU: We're experimenting with AI for news production, automatically generating versions of a story for broadcast, digital, and social. It's helped in places like SEO tagging and repackaging content. But adoption is slow unless it's built into existing tools. If you tell people 'go try this on your own,' it rarely happens.
Viet Dang, Director of Data Services, Houston-Galveston Area Council: We're still in the early stages of our AI journey. We created a safe space for staff to explore the potential and possibilities of three large language models—Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini. As a public-serving organization, our adoption has been thoughtful and cautious. We're especially mindful of protecting sensitive information and ensuring that nothing is shared inappropriately. With most of our funding coming from the federal government, we see AI as an opportunity to improve efficiency, and we're exploring how these tools can complement and streamline the way we serve the region.
Traci Pelter, President & Publisher, Houston Business Journal: What's a tech decision you've made recently that felt like a real turning point?
Ashok Kurian: About five years ago we decided to move more of our workload onto the cloud. It's given us the scale and flexibility we need for AI. The GPU access alone is game-changing for our algorithms.
Jeff Green: We're working on making our unstructured data more usable. Right now, we have documents all over the environments. This DLP project will allow us to get Microsoft Copilot deployed for the company, but we've got to clean up the document sprawl first.
Randy Volkin: We view it as important to continuously improve processes in addition to adopting technology to position the company for continued growth. We recently undertook a major project to transform our ERP platform and felt like we were able to achieve both. It was a very large undertaking but we couldn't be happier with the result.
Keith Tomshe: What's interesting is how some people at the station have gone full steam ahead with AI—like building their own apps to adapt content for different platforms—while others barely touch it. If it's integrated into a platform, people use it. Otherwise, it doesn't stick.
Justin Galbraith, Senior Manager Enterprise Sales, Comcast Business: I've got a customer using AI in video monitoring to prevent theft — like catching suspicious activity before it happens. Anyone else doing things like that? Permit processes, inspections, medical procedures?
Ashok Kurian: We're testing computer vision and image recognition in the field of pediatric radiology, to ensure our radiologists are focused on the most complex situations, and create efficiencies with the common ones.
Atif Riaz: Oil and gas uses cameras for remote monitoring: detecting leaks, fires, or missing safety gear. And now, with software overlays, we don't need specialized cameras. Any video feed can become intelligent through use of AI software.
Heather Orrico, Vice President, Comcast Business: How do you align with leadership on innovation and data security when there are competing priorities?
Atif Riaz: I have learned to reframe digital and security initiatives in terms of exploration, production, or operational success. Once you link IT to business goals, alignment and funding follows.
Randy Volkin: Reputation matters a lot at Perry Homes. But we also know there's no such thing as zero risk. Even the federal government gets breached. So we talk about making good, measured decisions rather than chasing everything shiny. You need to take calculated risks to progress any business but we won't make compromises with customer data or other matters that impact our reputation.
Viet Dang: Our CEO is very much in tune with emerging technology and its adoption. He recognized the value of AI early on and established—and now chairs—our internal AI Governance Committee. We're focused on organization-wide implementation, encouraging our team to explore the best uses of AI, develop effective prompts, and understand how these tools can support their work. At the same time, we're committed to educating staff on responsible use and maximizing the benefits AI can offer.
Jeff Baker, Chief Technology Officer, Socium Solutions: We always bring it back to opportunity cost. What's the ROI of this versus doing nothing? At a certain point, the next thing isn't worth the price.
Traci Pelter, President & Publisher, Houston Business Journal: I'd love to hear a challenge or win from this year. Something that went wel l— or didn't.
Atif Riaz: A few years ago, we made a very intentional decision to empower the business more—to encourage citizen development and give non-IT teams the tools and freedom to innovate. And it worked. More people started building solutions, bringing up ideas, and moving fast. This has been a big win for us.
The challenge with democratizing technology, though, is that not everyone wants to follow the governance process. It's a double-edged sword. You want a technically literate business, but also want to make sure there's agreement for them to stay within the guardrails.
Randy Volkin: Education will be reshaped. AI can personalize learning, give every student the exact input they need in ways that teachers can't. In one of my kid's university classes they had to use AI and show their work, keeping track of each prompt they used to get to the result. Another kid at a different university banned AI entirely. It's such a wild contrast
Keith Tomshe: Copilot is useful, but it lags behind some other tools. That's part of the expectation gap. People think AI is magic.
Casey Kiesewetter, Vice President, Houston Business Journal: What ripple effects are you seeing across your organization?
Jeff Baker: We can respond to anomalies faster. Yesterday, we flagged a potential issue in real time. That kind of agility didn't exist a year ago.
Ashok Kurian: We are exploring the use of natural language processing technology, which allows our clinicians to spend less time behind the computer, and more time with the patient. This also boosts provider satisfaction, as they are spending less time having to document, and more time with their families.
Jeff Baker: Bias is a concern, but it's not unique to AI. It exists in human providers too. At least with AI, we can audit those biases and make better decisions.
Heather Orrico, Vice President, Comcast Business: Fast forward 20 years: What does the balance between humans and AI look like?
Keith Tomshe: I got a Tesla. The self-driving is amazing. I even talked to ChatGPT on the way here to prep for this conversation. It's part of my workflow now.
Ashok Kurian: Artificial Intelligence has come a long way, but what's on the horizon is even more exciting. Innovations are being made today that will lead the world to potential Artificial General Intelligence, where AI will be able to learn on their own, with reasoning capabilities. The uses cases are endless, but we need to also ensure safety and protections with these new discoveries.
Atif Riaz: Some estimates put Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) just 12 months away. That's AI smarter than the smartest human alive. Whether you believe that or not, the urgency is real.
Heather Orrico, Vice President, Comcast Business: What does this mean for soft skills and people leadership in the future?

Jeff Baker: I teach a cybersecurity certificate course at UT. The best students aren't always the most technical. They're the ones who can communicate, think critically, and work without a prompt. I hope that skill set is still important in 20 years.
Jeff Green: I hire for critical thinking, not credentials. We once hired an art major who couldn't use Excel, but she became our best business analyst because she was great at problem solving and critical thinking. She knew how to ask the right questions and interpret those answers to produce business outcomes. That is going to set you apart in the future of the job market.
Atif Riaz: We see younger generation nowadays is losing social skills as they are glued to their devices. But if the argument is that robots will get more human-like, that means they'll want social interaction too. So relationships and social skills will still be paramount; that's how you 'get along' with AI.

Trump-supporter CEO calls out administration's ethane export ban to China: ‘These kinds of actions rarely hurt the intended target and often backfire'
Leading U.S. energy products exporter Enterprise Products Partners warned that the Trump administration continuing to 'weaponize' fossil fuel shipments to China would only backfire against U.S. shippers. Enterprise co-CEO Jim Teague issued his complaints during the July 28 earnings call about two months after the U.S. Commerce Department temporarily banned ethane exports to China as a trade agreement negotiating tool after China placed restrictions on the exports of certain rare earth metals to the U.S. Teague is frequently vocal about his right-leaning political allegiances and has personally donated to Trump. Both countries in July lifted their restrictions as part of a trade truce while a longer-term trade agreement is negotiated, which remains pending. 'We've been clear about the risk of weaponizing U.S. energy exports,' Teague said on the earnings call. 'These kinds of actions rarely hurt the intended target and often backfire, hurting our own industry more.' China is by far the largest importer of American ethane—the most common building block for petrochemicals and plastics worldwide. The U.S. is the only major exporter of ethane, making China entirely dependent on America's exports. Roughly half of all U.S. ethane exports go to China, and the cargoes are not easily redirected to other nations. Enterprise (No. 78 on the Fortune 500) is the leading ethane exporter from its Houston Ship Channel terminal. 'We are fortunate this administration understands the importance of energy and global trade, even if the Commerce Department may need a little reminder,' Teague said. 'Unfortunately, we could face similar challenges in the future.' Specifically, the Commerce Department temporarily required Enterprise and other exporters to apply for special federal licenses to export ethane and butane to China for the stated reason of the 'unacceptable risk' the natural gas liquids could be utilized for a 'military end use.' Enterprise executive vice president Tony Chovanec said the Commerce Department's actions cost Enterprise at least one ethane customer that wasn't from China. 'What it has done and where it's been a problem, you really compromised the U.S. brand for reliable supply and energy security when you just cut off a counterparty like that,' Chovanec said of the Commerce Department's actions. 'It's been disruptive but, in the short term, we were able to manage through it with our diverse contract mix.' Apart from China, he said, Enterprise ships ethane to Mexico, Brazil, Europe, India, Vietnam, and Thailand. Seeking alternatives In a new report, the East Daley Analytics firm said China may look to develop alternatives for U.S. ethane to avoid geopolitical disruptions. China could push Middle Eastern and European nations to further develop their own ethane exports to diversify supplies. 'In recent years, U.S. ethane was the quiet powerhouse of global petrochemicals—cheap, abundant, and presumably insulated from geopolitics. That assumption no longer holds,' East Daley stated. 'The U.S.-China trade war has exposed a critical truth: There is no global substitute for U.S. ethane at scale. What was once a stable feedstock is now caught in the crosscurrents of trade policy and long-cycle demand risk.' In the meantime, Enterprise is only doubling down on its ethane and propane exports businesses, including expanding its Houston Ship Channel facilities. Enterprise this month also just opened the first phase of its new Neches River Terminal ethane export hub in Texas near the Louisiana border. The facility will initially be able to ship 120,000 barrels of ethane a day. A second phase coming online in the first half of 2026 will more than double the exporting capacity to 300,000 barrels daily. Typically produced as a byproduct along with oil or natural gas, U.S. natural gas liquid volumes more than doubled in a decade to over 7 million barrels a day, nearly 6 million barrels of which are ethane, propane, and butane, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). That spike triggered a U.S. petrochemical plant construction boom, as well as burgeoning export markets because domestic supplies now far exceed demand. The ethane is typically converted into the petrochemical ethylene, which is used to make products such as polyethylene, the world's most common plastic. Liver cancer cases are projected to double, but more than half could be preventable
At least 60% of liver cancers could be preventable, according to an analysis published Monday in The Lancet. Liver cancer is the sixth most common cancer in the world, with around 870,000 cases in 2022. That's projected to increase to 1.52 million cases in 2050, the new report found, if no changes are made. The leading cause of liver cancer is viral infections, including the hepatitis B and C viruses. Hepatitis B infections — which are preventable with a vaccine — accounted for 39% of liver cancers in 2022. That's expected to fall slightly, to 36.9%, by 2025. Hepatitis C accounted for 29.1% of liver cancers in 2022 and is also projected to fall, to 25.9%, by 2050. The proportions of alcohol- and obesity-related liver cancers, however, are projected to rise in the next 25 years. Alcohol accounted for 18.8% of liver cancers in 2022, and that is expected to increase to 21.1% in 2050. The share of liver cancers caused by obesity-related disease is projected to increase from 8% to 10.8% by 2050 due to increasing rates of obesity, diabetes and high cholesterol and other metabolic risk factors. Dr. Hashem El-Serag, one of the report's co-authors and chair of the department of medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, said the public usually thinks of alcohol as the biggest risk factor for liver cancer. 'I think for most people, if you say cirrhosis, they immediately think of a relative, of someone who was a heavy drinker,' El-Serag said. 'I think the vast majority do not make the tie between MASLD, or fatty liver, and cirrhosis and liver cancer.' MASLD, or metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, affects about 25% of adults in the U.S. It's caused by a buildup of fat in the liver. About 5% of U.S. adults have a more severe form, called metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), which can lead to scarring, or cirrhosis, of the liver, significantly increasing the risk of cancer. Excess alcohol consumption can also lead to cirrhosis. Liver cancer is still relatively rare in the United States, representing 2.1% of all new cancer diagnoses in 2025. The report estimated that by 2040, U.S. rates of MASLD could more than double, affecting more than 55% of adults. Detecting liver cancer risk factors Earlier detection and effective treatment plans for MASLD can reduce the risk of obesity-related liver cancer, El-Serag said. The most common treatment is weight loss. GLP-1 weight loss drugs, which include Ozempic and Wegovy, are promising, he said. (A clinical trial published in April found that Wegovy treated MASH in about two-thirds of patients.) However, people aren't screened for MASLD like they are for viral hepatitis, El-Serag said. Dr. Arun Jesudian, a hepatologist and the director of liver quality and inpatient liver services at Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian, said patients are tested for MASLD and/or MASH if they have elevated liver enzymes in their blood. Raising awareness about MASLD among both patients and doctors can lead to more effective testing and diagnosis, Jesudian said. 'I think then we need to make sure that providers who are interacting with these patients are looking at the liver disease component of metabolic syndrome,' he said, referring to patients with a cluster of conditions including high blood sugar, high blood pressure and excess weight. 'So checking liver enzymes, that they know how to assess for fibrosis, even based on these blood test scores.' MASLD and MASH can often be asymptomatic, making self-detection more challenging. 'Right now, it's haphazard. Some people get tested. Others get suspected. Third, who knows?' El-Serag said. Dr. Neehar Parikh, a hepatologist at the University of Michigan who specializes in liver cancer, said he is seeing more patients with MASLD as a driving factor for liver cancer. Patients with MASLD can develop liver cancer without developing cirrhosis, making it even more challenging to detect those cases, Parikh said. Up to 40% of those with liver cancers linked to MASLD don't develop cirrhosis, according to the report. Figuring out who those patients are is the 'million-dollar question,' he said. 'Those patients that develop MASLD that develop liver cancer, you know, how do you screen that population? We don't really know what to do.' Still, Parikh said these types of cases are rare. Ultimately, Jesudian said, 'treating these liver diseases early is the best way to prevent liver cancer, because liver cancer almost always occurs in the setting of chronic liver disease.' Cheyenne to host massive AI data center using more electricity than all Wyoming homes combined
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — An artificial intelligence data center that would use more electricity than every home in Wyoming combined before expanding to as much as five times that size will be built soon near Cheyenne, according to the city's mayor. 'It's a game changer. It's huge,' Mayor Patrick Collins said Monday. With cool weather — good for keeping computer temperatures down — and an abundance of inexpensive electricity from a top energy-producing state, Wyoming's capital has become a hub of computing power. The city has been home to Microsoft data centers since 2012. An $800 million data center announced last year by Facebook parent company Meta Platforms is nearing completion, Collins said. The latest data center, a joint effort between regional energy infrastructure company Tallgrass and AI data center developer Crusoe, would begin at 1.8 gigawatts of electricity and be scalable to 10 gigawatts, according to a joint company statement. A gigawatt can power as many as 1 million homes. But that's more homes than Wyoming has people. The least populated state, Wyoming, has about 590,000 people. And it's a major exporter of energy. A top producer of coal, oil and gas, Wyoming ranks behind only Texas, New Mexico and Pennsylvania as a top net energy-producing state, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. But this proposed data center is so big, it would have its own dedicated energy from gas generation and renewable sources, according to Collins and company officials. Gov. Mark Gordon praised the project's value to the state's gas industry. 'This is exciting news for Wyoming and for Wyoming natural gas producers," Gordon said in the statement. While data centers are energy-hungry, experts say companies can help reduce their effect on the climate by powering them with renewable energy rather than fossil fuels. Even so, electricity customers might see their bills increase as utilities plan for massive data projects on the grid. The data center would be built several miles (kilometers) south of Cheyenne off U.S. 85 near the Colorado state line. State and local regulators would need to sign off on the project, but Collins was optimistic construction could begin soon. "I believe their plans are to go sooner rather than later,' Collins said. OpenAI, the developer of Chat GPT, has been scouring the U.S. for sites for a massive AI data center effort called Stargate, but a Crusoe spokesperson declined to say if the Cheyenne project was one. 'We are not at a stage that we are ready to announce our tenant there,' said the spokesperson, Andrew Schmitt. 'I can't confirm or deny that is going to be one of the stargate." Recently, OpenAI announced it had switched on the first phase of a Crusoe-built data center complex in Abilene, Texas, in a partnership with software giant Oracle. 'To the best of our knowledge, it is the largest data center — we think of it as a campus — in the world,' OpenAI's chief global affairs officer Chris Lehane told The Associated Press last week. 'It generates, roughly and depending how you count, about a gigawatt of energy.' OpenAI has also been looking elsewhere in the U.S. to expand its data centers. It said last week that it has entered into an agreement with Oracle to develop another 4.5 gigawatts of data center capacity. 'We're now in a position where we have, in a really concrete way, identified over five gigawatts of energy that we're going to be able to build around,' Lehane said.
