Princess Cruises making big casino change passengers demanded
Although smoking indoors is banned in most restaurants and bars, as well as many hotels and other businesses these days, most cruise lines continue to make one indoor smoking exception.
That's because most major cruise lines' ships have onboard casinos (besides Disney's).Although some land-based casinos have gone smoke-free, the majority of casino operators still believe that prohibiting smoking would be bad for business. And most cruise lines seem to agree.
Opinions seem to be shifting, however, as cruise lines work to increase their appeal to younger generations, who are smoking cigarettes less and less. In general, Millennials and Gen Z travelers tend to be more averse to being around secondhand smoke, too.
But although non-smoking casinos are becoming easier to find on cruise ships, not all lines have embraced the changing times.
Offering both a traditional smoking casino and separate non-smoking one has been a solution for some cruise lines, but the limited space on most cruise ships makes it difficult to offer that on smaller ships.
Most cruise lines are hesitant to go entirely smoke-free in the main casino due to concerns that non-smoking casinos would generate less revenue. If a passenger has to leave the casino to go smoke outside, they may not come back.
But a few cruise lines are already propelling a change in the industry.Celebrity Cruises stands out in the cruise industry for maintaining fully smoke-free casinos on all of its ships.
Smoking is also prohibited in Virgin Voyages' cruise ship casinos, though smoking is permitted in a designated smoking room nearby that includes a few slot machines. A few Norwegian Cruise Line ships also have a designated casino smoking room that's separate from the rest of the casino.
On select ships, Royal Caribbean and Carnival now offer smaller designated non-smoking casinos in addition to smoking ones. Royal Caribbean has acknowledged the popularity of these separate smoke-free casinos since adding them on its newer Oasis and Icon Class ships, and has now started adding them as it refurbishes older ships, too.Many Royal Caribbean cruisers would like to see the cruise line take the non-smoking casino a step further and swap the casino spaces, making the larger main casino smoke-free and limiting smoking to a smaller, separate space.
In general, most cruisers hope the smoke-free casino trend will continue to grow and spread to more cruise lines like Princess Cruises. Some Princess cruise passengers say that smoke drifting from the smoking section of the casino can be unbearable on some ships.'I would love to play the tables, but the cigarette smoke is awful. Why allow smoking in the casino? Seems counterproductive as myself and other non-smokers simply will not use the casinos,' codspeace recently wrote in the Princess Cruises Reddit community.
Many passengers agreed, although several expressed doubts that a fleetwide casino smoking ban would happen anytime soon.
To be clear, Princess cruise ship casinos are intended to be non-smoking areas, with one key exception. Each casino has a section of designated slot machines where guests are permitted to smoke only while playing at those machines. All table games are non-smoking, however.Many Princess passengers think that should change, because the smoking area isn't fully isolated from the main casino and smoke travels easily.
As the cruise line builds new ships, it does appear to be paying attention to passenger demands for smoke-free cruise casinos.
The cruise line has emphasized that a key highlight of its upcoming ship Star Princess, which debuts in the fall, is expanded non-smoking casino areas. This will include 68 additional slot machines in newly designated non-smoking sections of the casino.
Although it's not a full non-smoking Princess cruise ship casino just yet, it's a step in the smoke-free direction.

Carnival Corp. loses appeal over Princess Cruises negligence case And Carnival Corporation has lost its appeal over the Ruby Princess COVID outbreak. An Australian court upheld a ruling that found Carnival negligent and misleading for allowing the ship to sail in March of 2020 despite knowing COVID-19 risks. Now the Ruby Princess became a major source of Australia's early cases with 28 deaths and over 660 passengers infected. A class action lawsuit confirmed Carnival failed in its duty of care and the company could now face millions in passenger payouts. Warner Bros. boss David Zaslav is the real ‘Man of Steel' in shifting media landscape
They hate him in Hollywood, but increasingly they're loving David Zaslav on Wall Street. OK, maybe it's not quite love but there's definitely some canoodling going down. Shares of Warner Bros. Discovery are up more than 53% over the past 12 months. Bob Iger gets endless kudos for turning around Disney following years of mismanagement and woke programming hated by much of the American public. His stock is up just 27% over the same time period. Jack Forbes / NY Post Design Zas, as he is known in the media business, is a long-time media executive who landed at the top of major media by getting the telephone nerds at AT&T to offload its Warner Media subsidiary that they didn't know how to operate to his company, Discovery, in 2022. The deal was valued at $43 billion and contained lots of debt, a drag on its share price. Shares dipped to near penny stock levels (just above $5) last year. They closed at $13.17 on Thursday. Hollywood's skepticism toward Zas began with his lack of creative chops. He was a longtime NBCUniversal executive, an acolyte of Jack Welch when he ran the media company as head of the General Electric conglomerate. He then became CEO of Discovery, a mid-sized media outfit with cable channels like the Food Network, Animal Planet and HGTV that were losing viewers in an era of cord cutting. They churned out profits based on Zas's deft balance sheet management as opposed to top-notch programming, or so his Hollywood critics said. Adding credence to the Zas' haters' world view: His reign as media mogul included a major branding misstep, renaming HBO's streaming service 'Max,' a moniker (for obvious reasons) that never stuck. He also alienated those in La La Land by canceling programs as he slashed through the balance sheet. It became nearly impossible to defend Zaslav given his stock's uneven performance and his massive $52 million pay package in 2024 – in an industry that is literally melting away because of seismic changes in the way people consume entertainment, news and sports. Pictures But there's a bullish Zas story when you sit with the business types – not crazy lefties in Hollywood who still haven't forgiven him for pulling the plug on useless movies like 'Batgirl' or refusing to overpay for NBA rights because he believed $2.6 billion a year could be put to better use. Despite the name screw-up, his streaming service makes money, a near anomaly among traditional media companies. He's breaking up WBD and will control the HBO Max streaming properties and Warner Bros. studios as CEO. His current chief financial officer, Gunnar Widenfels, will get something named Discovery Global, a holding company for the Discovery+ streaming service and all the cable networks. Those include Discovery Channel, CNN and TNT. Plus, Zas admitted defeat and went back to HBO Max for his streaming channel. Rich Greenfield, the 'ax' or eminence grise of media analysts at LightShed Partners, says Wall Street may be starting to appreciate Zas as a survivor who will keep living to fight another day, and that day may well pay off for his shareholders. 'Obviously this isn't an easy business.' Greenfield says. 'But the brilliance of David Zaslav is that he got out of Discovery which was going nowhere and convinced AT&T to engage in a merger that gave it a second life. The question now is how he builds the Warner Bros. studio and HBO given this environment.'
