Ventura County coach arrested for allegedly trying to meet 13-year-old girl for sex

Yahoo23-05-2025
A Ventura County coach was arrested for allegedly trying to meet a 13-year-old girl for sex.
The suspect, Gary Larson, 67, of Camarillo, was arrested following an investigation in February, the Ventura County Sheriff's Office announced on May 19.
A records check revealed Larson was involved in coaching youth soccer and giving private tennis lessons, investigators said.
On Feb. 8, Thousand Oaks deputies responded to a Target store at 2705 Teller Road in Newbury Park for a possible child crime investigation. Deputies were alerted to the suspect by an organization called Predator Poachers, whose undercover members had been pretending to be a 13-year-old while speaking with Larson.
Predator Poachers is a third-party organization that conducts sting operations across the U.S. on adults who seek sexual activities with minors, VCSO explained.
Larson was located at the store and detained for questioning, where he admitted to speaking with underage girls, authorities said.
In at least one conversation, he allegedly described sexually explicit acts he was seeking to engage in with the young girl. He also admitted to sending explicit photographs to one of the girls he was communicating with.
Investigators later found that he possessed child sexual abuse material (CSAM), was active in multiple group chats on messaging applications, and had traded various CSAM videos and images, the sheriff's office said.
He was arrested for communicating with a minor to commit a sexual offense, arranging a meeting with a minor for the purpose of lewd or lascivious acts, possession of child pornography and distribution of child pornography.
Days later on Feb. 11, Larson posted bail for $100,000.
In late February, a 12-year-old girl and her mother reported a possible child crime to the Thousand Oaks Police Department.
The girl and her mother said Larson had advertised 'tennis lessons for juveniles' on Craigslist and the child had been receiving tennis lessons from Larson for over a year.
'Based on the report, it appears Larson was 'grooming' the juvenile,' authorities said. 'Grooming, in reference to child abuse, is defined as a manipulative process where an individual builds trust and an emotional connection with a juvenile to exploit and/or abuse them.'
Authorities believe there may be more victims of Larson who have yet to come forward. No further details were released as the case remains under investigation.
Anyone who may have been a victim or has additional information is urged to call Detective Nicole Adrianzen at 805-494-8229 or email Nicole.adrianzen@ventura.org. Callers can remain anonymous.
'The Ventura County Sheriff's Office Major Crimes Sexual Assault Unit is committed to the safety of our community's youth,' the sheriff's office said. 'The access afforded to young people online can be overwhelming and is opportunistic to sexual predators. We encourage all parents to talk to their children about the risks associated with internet predators and to report any matters to law enforcement they feel are inappropriate or criminal in nature.'

Dark web child abuse websites dismantled by DOJ, FBI

President Donald Trump's Justice Department recently announced that a joint operation resulted in the dismantling of four dark web sites responsible for the distribution of child sexual abuse material to hundreds of thousands of users. The operation also resulted in 18 convictions. In a press release last Wednesday, the Justice Department confirmed that 18 people were convicted as part of Operation Grayskull, which was coordinated by the Justice Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The press release noted that the operation led to the 'dismantling' of four dark web sites that were 'dedicated to images and videos containing child sexual abuse material (CSAM).' 'Today's announcement sends a clear warning to those who exploit and abuse children: you will not find safe haven, even on the dark web,' Acting Assistant Attorney General Matthew R. Galeotti of the Justice Department's Criminal Division said. 'These offenders thought that they could act without consequences, but they were wrong. The Justice Department described the dismantled dark web sites as 'some of the most egregious' sites on the dark web, with some website sections even featuring 'infants and toddlers, as well as depictions of violence, sadism, and torture.' The department also noted that the websites gave users advice to avoid being detected by law enforcement officials. FBI Director Kash Patel said Operation Grayskull is one of the 'most significant strikes' against online child exploitation networks. 'We've not only dismantled dangerous platforms on the dark web, but we've also brought key perpetrators to justice and delivered a powerful message: you cannot hide behind anonymity to harm children,' Patel stated. The Justice Department confirmed that nine individuals were convicted and sentenced in Florida for running the main dark web site that was targeted by Operation Grayskull, while nine individuals were convicted for operating other dark web sites devoted to child sexual abuse material. Additionally, two other individuals died before they were charged for their role in the dark web sites. In addition to the convictions in the United States, the Justice Department noted that other individuals were arrested in Belgium, Estonia, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, South Africa, and the United Kingdom. According to CBS News, Operation Grayskull started in 2020 after law enforcement officials observed an increase in traffic to a dark web site that was suspected of providing child sexual abuse material. An FBI official told CBS News that the dark web sites targeted in Operation Grayskull attracted over 120,000 people, had at least 100,000 website visits in one day, and had millions of files. 'Even for prosecutors, it is difficult to understand how pervasive this is,' Galeotti told CBS News. 'Because it happens on the dark web, people aren't aware of it. It's extremely troubling.'

Fugitive linked to South American bank robbery crew arrested after ATM bombing

He was the last man standing from a prolific bank heist crew that prosecutors say made off with millions during a string of robberies up and down the West Coast. Then he allegedly bombed an ATM in Contra Costa County. The man, identified as Diego Ananias Arellano Diaz, was arrested and charged with bank robbery and conspiracy to commit bank robbery, federal prosecutors announced Thursday. For several months, he was listed in court records only as 'John Doe 2,' an alleged member of a South American theft group that authorities say carried out robberies in California, Oregon and Washington. The crew targeted ATMs and banks. They stayed in Airbnb rentals near their targets and were armed with construction vests, sledgehammers, blowtorches and surgical masks, according to court documents. The crew wielded signal jammers to interfere with Wi-Fi-enabled security systems, spray painted over security camera lenses and used rental cars secured on the black market. They carried out their heists between May and October 2024, according to federal prosecutors in the U.S. attorney's office for the Eastern District of California. The crew stole more than $4 million in cash, prosecutors say. A federal grand jury indicted 11 defendants on charges of bank robbery and conspiracy to commit bank robbery on Oct. 31. All the defendants were named, except for Arellano Diaz. He was listed as 'John Doe 2' in a separate complaint. Many of the named defendants were arrested in California, Florida and Chile, and their equipment was seized at an Airbnb in Welches, Ore., that the FBI said was being used as the crew's base of operations. Agents recovered toolboxes and other equipment from the rental unit, authorities said. During a review of the items on April 29, FBI agents pulled clothing that could be tested for DNA. Agents also found a GoPro video camera with a memory card inside. After securing a warrant to search the camera's memory card in early May, FBI agents discovered several video files that included one of the named defendants in the case, Camilo Guzman Sepulveda. Agents also found an image of Arellano Diaz, who at that point was still unidentified. That photo underwent facial recognition analysis, and the following day a match was made to Arellano Diaz, according to court documents. His name was added to an arrest warrant, but that remained under seal while he was still at large. According to prosecutors, Arellano Diaz — who was using the name Fabio Hernandez — was initially arrested in Los Angeles County in February and charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a firefighter or police officer. He was released on a $75,000 surety bond, and then he vanished. On July 20, police in the Bay Area city of San Ramon identified Arellano Diaz as the man they suspected of blowing up an ATM at a local Target store. He was arrested Tuesday in Newport Beach, authorities said.

Limerick police cleared by Montgomery County DA in chase, crash that killed 3 teens

Limerick Township police did not break the law when responding to a call last month that ended in a fatal crash, the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office said Wednesday. The investigation of the crash that killed three teens was limited to examining whether there were any violations of the law by police, Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele said. Limerick police responded to a 911 call of a potential theft in progress at Target on Ridge Pike in Royersford on June 3. An officer saw a Toyota Camry operating without its headlights as it left the Target parking lot onto Kline Road, the DA's office said. The officer attempted a vehicle stop, activating the patrol car's emergency lights and siren, when the car made a left turn on West Ridge Pike. The DA said instead of stopping, the car sped west on Ridge Pike, starting a chase. The car came to a rest after losing control on the 300 block of West Ridge Pike, going over a grassy area for about 91 feet, hitting a utility pole, then colliding with a stone wall and going airborne, according to the DA's office. Investigators found the car traveled nearly 2 miles on West Ridge Pike in 1 minute and 33 seconds, speeding between 70 and 92 miles per hour, the DA said. The DA's office said the driver of the Camry didn't have a Pennsylvania driver's license. Investigators determined the cause of the crash was the driver's inexperience, which led to her loss of control while speeding to evade police. "There were no violations of law by the police during this incident," according to a news release. Family and friends held a balloon release for the three teens, Gabriel Cooper, 17, Nasir Youk, 17 and Siniyah Newsuan, 17, on June 6. Over 100 people attended the balloon release in Spring City, where the teens grew up. "This horrific crash seriously injuring one teenager and taking the lives of three others has left three families grieving the loss of their children. We, along with the community, share their sadness and loss," Steele said.
