291 roads closed in Himachal as rains continue

Shimla, July 31 (PTI) A total of 291 roads, including the Chandigarh-Manali National Highway 21, were blocked for vehicular traffic in Himachal Pradesh following rains in the past few days.
Meanwhile, the local MeT office has issued a yellow warning for heavy rains at isolated places for the next four days, officials said on Thursday.
Out of the 291 roads, 171 roads were blocked in the disaster-hit Mandi district, followed by 76 in Kullu district, according to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC). Around 416 power distribution transformers and 219 water supply schemes have also been affected across the state as of Thursday evening, the SEOC said.
Meanwhile, light to moderate rains lashed parts of the state since Wednesday evening. Dharamshala received 54.4 mm of rain since Wednesday evening, followed by Murari Devi 52.4 mm, Kothi 49.1 mm, Sundernagar 41.7 mm, Gohar 40 mm, Sarahan 34 mm, Naina Devi 28.6 mm, Mandi 26.2 mm, Pandoh 26 mm, Baggi 25.8 mm, Jubbarhatti 24.4 mm and Slapper 24.1 mm.
The MeT office has issued a yellow warning for heavy rains at isolated places in three to ten districts from Thursday till Monday.
Since the onset of monsoon in Himachal on June 20 till July 31, the state has suffered losses to the tune of Rs 1,626 crore.
So far, 95 people have died and 36 have gone missing in rain-related incidents, while 1,472 houses have been fully or partially damaged in the state. The state has witnessed 44 flash floods, 27 cloudbursts and 40 major landslides, officials said. PTI BPL MPL MPL

Expect rain, thundershowers for two days, AQI satisfactory
New Delhi: Some parts of Delhi recorded very light rain activity on Saturday. While the India meteorological department has not issued any colour-coded alerts for the coming days, it has forecasted a few spells of moderate rain or thundershowers for Sunday and Monday. According to the IMD, from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm, Najafgarh received 1.5 mm, Palam 0.6 mm, Pusa 0.5 mm, Rajghat 0.1 mm, and Gurgaon 1.5 mm of rainfall. In the absence of intense rain activity during the day, high humidity combined with elevated temperatures made outdoor conditions uncomfortable. The maximum temperature was recorded at 33.7 degrees Celsius, one degree below normal. The heat index or feel-like temperature settled at 43 degrees Celsius at 2.30 pm and 42.2 degrees Celsius at 5.30 pm on Saturday. The relative humidity oscillated between 66% and 92%. During the ongoing monsoon season, Delhi has witnessed excess rain till now. The city received 45% excess rainfall in June and 24% excess rainfall in July. Delhi's air quality, meanwhile, continued to stay in the 'satisfactory' category with an Air quality index of 79. It was 61 a day earlier. According to the air quality early warning system for Delhi, which is the forecasting body under the Union ministry of earth sciences, the air quality is likely to remain in the 'satisfactory' range till August 5. "The outlook for the subsequent six days from August 5 onwards is that the air quality is likely to be in the Satisfactory to Moderate category," said EWS. Dam collapses in HP's Kullu, triggers panic in lower areas
1 2 SHIMLA/KULLU: Battered by heavy rain and flash floods, a temporary dam in Himachal Pradesh's Kullu district collapsed Friday, sweeping away heavy machinery and triggering panic in downstream areas. No casualties were reported. The cofferdam breach sent a torrent of water crashing into the Malana-I hydroelectric project site. It gave way after the Malana rivulet in Parvati Valley overflowed, clogged with debris that blocked its drainage pipes, an official said. The resulting surge of water inundated the project site, damaging critical infrastructure and equipment. The project site had suffered massive damage last year as well after a flash flood in the rivulet. The Himachal administration is keeping a close watch on all its dams. According to the state emergency operation centre, water levels were within permissible operational limits till 5pm on Saturday. Bajoliholi dam and Baira dam on the Ravi basin, and Sainj Barrage and Largi Barrage on the Beas basin have shut down their plants due to high silt and maintenance. Roads, homes and markets are flooded. Education institutions have been closed, and the public has been requested not to go near water bodies. Una district had recorded 1,854% excess rainfall till Saturday evening compared to a normal rainfall of 11.4mm, according to the weather department. The rains resulted in flooding of Chandigarh-Dharamshala NH at various places. Una deputy commissioner Jatin Lal said, "Till 4pm, we had faced Rs 27 crore losses." Met has issued a yellow alert for heavy rain in Shimla, Solan & Sirmaur districts. As many as 404 roads, including NH-505 in Lahaul & Spiti, were blocked Saturday. Mandi was the worst hit.
