Man United defender Jonny Evans announces retirement and new role with the Premier League club
MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Manchester United defender Jonny Evans announced his retirement from soccer on Monday, ending a playing career that included three Premier League titles.
The 37-year-old Evans will take up a new role at United overseeing loans and player development.
'I want to officially announce my retirement from my playing career, not with sadness, but with pride, gratitude and excitement for the next chapter ahead,' he said.
Evans became a free agent at the end of the season following his second spell at United, having graduated through its academy. He also played for West Bromwich Albion and Leicester in a career in which he played 107 times for Northern Ireland. His other major trophies were the FA Cup and two English League Cups.
Evans is currently completing his qualifications in coaching. His official title at United is head of loans and pathways.
'Having just finished his exceptional playing career, Jonny is the perfect role model for our young players,' said United director of football Jason Wilcox. 'Jonny's knowledge of what it takes to succeed at Manchester United will be of great benefit to each of them as we continue to develop world-class talent capable of performing in our first team.'

Wheeler strikes out 10 in 8 innings to lead Phillies past Padres 4-0
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Zack Wheeler struck out 10 in eight innings, Nick Castellanos homered and the Philadelphia Phillies won in Bryce Harper's return to the lineup, 4-0 over the San Diego Padres on Monday night. Harper was hit by a pitch on the left foot, walked and lined into an unassisted double play as part of a 0-for-2 night in his first game since June 5. Harper returned from a nearly month-long layoff with right wrist inflammation to start at first base and bat third. Wheeler (8-3) tossed six-hit ball and did not walk a batter in another sterling outing for the NL East leaders. Padres center fielder Jackson Merrill did his part to keep the game from getting totally out of hand in the third when he reached well over the wall in straightaway center and robbed Max Kepler of a three-run homer. The rest of the game was all Philadelphia. If Merrill made the play of game, Bryson Stott was right him behind for the Phillies. After he walked and stole second base, Stott hustled home on Brandon Marsh's grounder to first and scored on a head-first slide for a 2-0 lead. Marsh scored on Trea Turner's infield single to make it 3-0. Castellanos' solo shot off Padres starter Matt Waldron in the fifth made it 4-0. Waldron (0-1) made his season debut after the knuckleballer spent all season on the injured list with left oblique strain. He walked six in 4 2/3 innings. Key moment With runners on first and second and one out in the fifth, Wheeler got pinch-hitter Trenton Brooks to line into a double play. Brooks hit one to Stott at second base and he flipped the ball to Turner at the bag to complete the inning-ending play. Yankees outfielder Trent Grisham leaves game at Toronto because of tight left hamstring
TORONTO (AP) — New York Yankees outfielder Trent Grisham left Monday night's game against the Toronto Blue Jays after four innings because of a tight left hamstring. Jasson Domínguez replaced Grisham on defense in the fifth, coming in to play left field as Cody Bellinger moved from left to center. Grisham went 1 for 2 before exiting. He hit a leadoff single in the fourth and scored on Jazz Chisholm Jr.'s 14th home run. Grisham is batting .246 with 15 home runs and 32 RBIs. Virginia swimmer Gretchen Walsh wins the Honda Cup, given to top female college athlete
NEW YORK (AP) — Virginia swimmer Gretchen Walsh won the Honda Cup, given annually to the country's top female college athlete, on Monday night. She's the ninth swimmer to win the award and first since Simone Manuel in 2018. 'This year's Honda Cup winner, Gretchen Walsh, is nothing short of world-class,' said Chris Voelz, executive director of the Collegiate Women Sports Awards. 'Her performance at the national championships was extraordinary — shattering collegiate, American and even world records. 'We are incredibly proud of her accomplishments both in the pool and in the classroom, and we look forward to watching her continue to rise as she prepares for the World Championships and the 2028 Olympic Games. We're thrilled to welcome Gretchen to the CWSA family, joining the elite group of swimmers who have earned this prestigious honor before her.' The other two finalists for the award were UConn basketball star Paige Bueckers and Texas Tech softball pitcher NiJaree Canady. The top three were determined by votes from nearly 1,000 NCAA member schools, with the final Honda Cup recipient selected by the CWSA board of directors. Caitlin Clark won the award the previous two years. Walsh was a two-time Honda Award winner for swimming and diving. She helped Virginia to its fourth straight NCAA team title. She won seven NCAA championships this year, including the 50-yard freestyle, 100 freestyle and 100 butterfly, and concluded her collegiate career with 25 NCAA titles (nine individual). She was 16 for 16 in NCAA relay finals in her career. Walsh is the second Honda Cup winner from Virginia. Basketball star Dawn Staley won the award in 1991.
