Hollywood pair had 'great chemistry' in 'emotional' film which led to decade-long relationship

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth met as teenagers while starring in the heartbreaking film The Last Song, which saw the young couple fall in love on screen and in real life
Nicholas Sparks ' heart-tugging novels have been the blueprint for some of the most beloved romantic comedies of the 2000s, not least the cinematic rendition of The Notebook, sparking off-screen romances along the way.

This was certainly true for a certain high-profile pair who crossed paths as youngsters portraying a blossoming romance on screen, simultaneously kindling their own. Chart-topping sensation Miley Cyrus and silver screen heartthrob Liam Hemsworth first locked eyes on the set of the poignant drama The Last Song.

Debuting in 2010, the film charts the turbulent journey of a defiant young woman named Ronnie, who relocates to live with her estranged father, portrayed by Greg Kinnear, following her parents' split. The move takes her and her brother from the hustle of city life to the serene coastal town where her dad resides.

Throughout the story, Ronnie mends fences with her family and rediscovers herself, all while falling head over heels for a local lad. Her innate piano skills come to the fore, encouraged by her father's past as a Juilliard-trained musician, as she strives to mend their fractured bond, despite time running short.
A Rotten Tomatoes critique applauded the movie, saying: "An emotional and romantic coming-of-age story, Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth make a couple with great chemistry, and the credits song When I Look At You is one to cry to. A great adaptation."

The on-screen romance that captivated audiences wasn't quite the fairytale behind the scenes, reports the Express, with the couple experiencing several break-ups over their decade-long relationship. In 2012, fans were thrilled to hear about the engagement of the young stars, but by 2013, wedding bells had been silenced, and it looked like it was all over.
The film's allure was undoubtedly boosted by the palpable chemistry between the leads, surprising many viewers with Cyrus's commendable acting chops. One review admitted: "I'm not a big fan of Miley Cyrus, but I have to say she did an outstanding job in this."

Tear-jerking warnings accompany mentions of the film, as one viewer shared: "The Last Song tugged at my heartstrings and drained my eyes of tears. I just don't get why a lot of people don't like this movie when it's got such a beautiful and heart-wrenching story." Emotions ran high for another fan who confessed: "I cried when I read the book two years ago, and so did I when I watched the movie two minutes ago. Hands down, this movie is amazing."
Against all odds, Cyrus and Hemsworth secretly wed in 2018 after rekindling their romance, yet the reunion was short-lived; they divorced in 2019. Both have since found new love away from the spotlight.
Nostalgic fans often look back fondly at the early days of what became a real-life romance, while some viewers remained oblivious to the off-screen drama unfolding before them.
A cinema enthusiast commented: "I'm not a fan of Miley Cyrus, but in the film I was enchanted by her character. The Last Song is a very romantic and emotive film, which I like to watch. The plot of the film has a great reflection of real life."

Where is Karen Pirie season 2 filmed?

Karen Pirie is back on our screens with the second series of the ITV drama and the stunning locations in Scotland have been revealed The second series of Karen Pirie sees the detective handed a notorious cold case that will place her under relentless examination; from her superior, from journalists, and crucially, from menacing elements that would prefer the past remained buried. ‌ The mystery surrounding Catriona and Adam Grant has baffled detectives after the mother and son were snatched at gunpoint outside a chippy in Fife. ‌ As Karen endeavours to uncover the truth behind their disappearance, the inquiry leads her throughout Scotland. ‌ Discussing the filming locations and the significance of setting to the narrative, director Gareth Bryn revealed: "For me, a strong sense of place is crucial, especially because Val McDermid's writing is so specific. It's hard to stray from the world she creates in her books, so I've aimed to stay as true to it as possible. "Karen's home in the books covers a vast area, which gave us flexibility. In the first series, she was based right in the middle of Kirkcaldy, but for this series, we moved her slightly out of the town. ‌ "Time has passed, and with her promotion, it made sense for her to be in a slightly nicer area." He continued: "The landscape plays a significant role in police dramas. If you're not careful, you end up with lots of interior two handers, or interview scenes but in Karen Pirie, the landscape acts as a character itself. "We were spoiled for choice in Fife, with its stately homes and castles. For example, we used two castles: one for exterior shots of the Grant's house, and another for interiors. ‌ "We also filmed some scenes in the caves outside St. Andrews, which turned out beautifully. The weather worked in our favour - it was surprisingly sunny, which made filming much easier," reports the Express. Lead actress Lauren Lyle remarked: "It's always amazing to return to Scotland - it feels like a whole character in itself. The landscapes and the people all add so much to the show. I love that we're portraying a modern Scotland with a diverse mix of people and perspectives. "Scotland's sense of humour, that dry, sarcastic tone, really shines through in the show. I also love that it feels universal - it's not just a Scottish story, but something everyone can relate to. It's a privilege to showcase Scotland as a cool, stylish, powerful place beyond the stereotypes of tartan and hills." Chris Jenks, who portrays DC Jason 'Mint' Murray, expressed his delight at filming in his homeland: "Glasgow is such a fun place to film as well - there's loads of stuff going on. Early on, we filmed out in a little cottage in Luss which was a beautiful place to film. I'd love to work in Scotland again," he shared.

Acclaimed thriller hailed as a ‘masterpiece' now available to stream

One of the greatest horror films of all time has been made available to stream for free on BBC iPlayer. Directed by Nicolas Roeg from a story by Daphne Du Maurier, Don't Look Now is widely regarded as a pivotal work in the genre. It stars the late, great Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie as John and Laura Baxter, two parents grieving the recent death of their young daughter. The pair visit Venice, where John is helping to renovate a dilapidated church. While there, they meet a pair of elderly sisters—one of whom claims to be a psychic. John struggles with the idea that she's seeing the spirit of his recently drowned daughter but seems to be experiencing nightmarish visions of his own, leading to that shocking twist. After first terrifying audiences in 1973, Don't Look Now is streaming for free, where it can traumatise viewers afresh. Don't Look Now currently sits with a healthy 93% 'fresh' score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with critics describing it as a 'masterpiece' and a 'classic' of the genre. Little White Lies has called it 'calculated perfection,' while The Times described it simply as 'genius.' In 2002, prominent film critic Roger Ebert gave the film a glowing five stars, calling out the film as 'a masterpiece of physical filmmaking.' Upon its release, the film was overshadowed by controversy surrounding its infamous sex scene. As Roeg cuts between images of John and Laura getting ready for dinner, the camera also shows the pair in bed together in a raw and intimate sex sequence. Its visual style led to persistent rumours that these were scenes of real, unsimulated sex between its actors… speculation that continues today. 'My gaze shifted to the actors, and I was riveted. By their shifting positions, it was clear to me they were no longer simply acting: they were f***ing on camera,' wrote Producer Peter Bart in his 2011 memoir, Infamous Players: A Tale of Movies, the Mob (and Sex). However, the stars have always rejected such allegations, with Sutherland denying that Bart was even in the room at all. In the production notes for the film's 4K re-release, cinematographer Anthony B. Richmond echoed Sutherland's denial, saying: 'We did a good job; it's very real. People still say they actually made love, but they didn't.' Meanwhile, Christie's boyfriend at the time, actor Warren Beatty, reportedly tried to prevent the film from being released, so outraged was he by the infamous sex scene. In April 2015, it was announced that the film would be getting a remake, to the chagrin of Hunger Games star Sutherland. Speaking in a sweary interview with Metro, the actor described the prospect of a remake as 'shameful.' More Trending He explained: 'Don't embarrass yourselves by participating in it. It's bulls**t. It was a piece of work indelibly written by Nicholas Roeg. 'Why would they do it? It's just people trying to profit off the back of something that's very beautiful. It's shameful. They should be ashamed of themselves.' A decade on, and the remake has not yet resurfaced. Might it be dead in the water? Watch Don't Look Now on BBC iPlayer. Got a story?
