In addition to the 19 undocumented individuals taken into custody, police arrested two suspects for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Another suspect was apprehended for drug possession, while 15 zip-lock packets containing suspected narcotics were discovered abandoned in a park near Waverley, not far from Corlett Drive in Melrose.
Further into the operation, officers arrested a suspect found in possession of a toy firearm, a black-handled knife, and a credit card believed to have been stolen during a robbery. In a separate incident, one person was arrested after being found with a stolen identity document. SAPS also confirmed that drugs were confiscated near the M1 on-ramp at Glenhove in Houghton.
A second-hand goods business was immediately closed for non-compliance with regulations, and 10 traffic fines were issued for various offences committed during the operation. In total, police searched 417 individuals and nine premises across the Norwood area.
The large-scale operation involved collaboration between 21 police stations from Johannesburg's East, North, and Central areas, as well as the SAPS K9 unit, JMPD, Gauteng Traffic Wardens, Norwood CPF, Home Affairs, and private security companies. Brigadier Vusimuzi Michael Ngubane served as the overall operational commander, with Brigadier Mitchell Jones leading ground efforts.
Warrant Officer Eric Mastosha praised the role of the community, saying that many of the arrests and discoveries were made possible thanks to residents' tip-offs. 'It shows we are in a strong partnership with our community in the fight against crime,' he said.
The operation was well-received by the public, with many residents expressing appreciation for the increased visibility of law enforcement in the area. According to Mastosha, the targeted hotspots were all attended to, and while no illegal firearms were recovered, the operation addressed several key concerns raised by the community.
Authorities have since confirmed that the Norwood leg of Operation Shanela was a great success.

Teen girl targeted by Instagram predator in KZN

A KZN family called for help after a man who met their teenage daughter on Instagram and threatened her arrived at their home. In the digital era, children can use their devices to interact with strangers on social media. For a 13-year-old girl from Phoenix, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), what began as an online friendship with a man on Instagram turned into a nightmare when he shared explicit content, threatened her, and tracked her down. On Monday afternoon, officers from Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) were called to a residence after an Instagram follower, who had threatened the girl's life, was discovered outside her home at approximately 3.17 pm. KZN teen's stalking outside her home When the officers arrived at the home, the 18-year-old man had fled the scene in a white Toyota Corolla. The girl's family had also locked themselves inside the house. The perpetrator has been identified as a resident of Kenville, in KZN, and works for a catering company. Rusa spokesperson Prem Balram said the family told the officers that their Grade 8 daughter had been chatting to a man who befriended her on Instagram in April 2024. 'The girl became concerned for her safety when the suspect stalked her at school and on excursions and knew her whereabouts,' Balram said. 'He then threatened her with exposing her nudes and demanded money.' Man, 18, threatened to expose teen's explicit images for money Pictures: Supplied. In South African law, sexually explicit photographs, videos and communications, including those sent between minors under the age of 18, may be classified as child pornography, and the taker of the image, the recipient of the image, and anyone who shares the content may be charged and found guilty of crimes. Unfortunately, the teenage girl has shared personal details with the man, who used the information to track down her residential address and the work locations of her parents. The situation escalated to threats of kidnapping and murder. Reaction officers have obtained facial images of the suspect, which have been forwarded to the police. The Department of Basic Education (DBE) warned of the safety risks of meeting with online predators. Risks linked to online predators 'The internet is a great space and resource for children and teenagers, giving them access to a wealth of information and interaction owing to a vast array of platforms, including social media, email and text messaging,' the department said in April. 'Unfortunately, with this vast access lies the safety risk of meeting with online predators. Online predators are adults who often, in a sexually motivated way, approach children and teenagers online to exploit their innocence and inexperience.' Such behaviour exposes children to the risks of trafficking and child sexual exploitation. NOW READ: WATCH: Woman badly beaten by alleged stalker ex after arriving at work

SAPS recruitment: Over 67 000 applications received in 24 hours

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed that it received over 67 000 applications within 24 hours for the Basic Police Learning Development Programme (BPLDP) through its e-recruitment system. The SAPS launched the e-recruitment system on Monday, 30 June, as it seeks 5 500 new trainees to join its ranks. For the first time in history, the SAPS is utilising an Electronic Recruitment System, through which youth from all walks of life can submit their applications to be considered for the entry-level police trainee posts. SAPS national spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said the shift to a digital platform is expected to reduce paperwork, curb corruption and nepotism, and prevent lost applications. It is also expected to enhance fairness, efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and improve the integrity and speed of the recruitment process. Mathe said the nationwide recruitment drive begins today, 30 June, with online applications closing on 18 July. It targets young men and women aged 18 to 35 to join as police trainees for the 2025/2026 financial year. 'Qualifying young men and women without criminal records and/or pending criminal cases are encouraged to apply by visiting then select the e-Recruitment portal from the drop down menu. 'It is worth mentioning that the SAPS will implement a targeted recruitment process to identify and consider applicants with specific skills and/or qualifications, i.e., Graduates in Law, Policing, Criminology, Law Enforcement, Forensic Investigation, and Information Technology, for placement in the specialised environments such as the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), Detective and Forensic Services as well as Crime Intelligence (CI),' she explained. Additionally, applicants will be subjected to a rigorous selection process, which entails: psychometric, integrity, physical fitness assessments, and fingerprint/vetting screening as well as medical evaluations to ensure that the SAPS enlist disciplined, energetic, intelligent, physically and mentally fit individuals, dedicated to serving their country through Policing, Unsurprisingly, the website is experiencing a delayed response due to traffic volumes. Mathe said the Technology Management Services (TMS) , inclusive of IT experts, are continuously monitoring the influx of applications. 'Applicants are therefore advised to be patient and to continue to refresh the careers page. Applicants are reminded that the closing date is 18 July 2025 and all applications should be submitted via the website portal and not via email,' Mathe added.
