Coimbatore city police commissioner launches inquiry into alleged police excess during vehicle check
The incident was recorded by local residents and has gone viral on social media, with claims that it involved police excess. As a result, an inquiry was initiated. In response, the city police released another video on Thursday with the young man, whose face is masked, admitting that the matter was resolved shortly after the incident, and someone had recorded and shared the footage online.
Sources said that on June 24, two young men in a car were allegedly stopped by a police team from Ukkadam police station for a vehicle check near Kottaimedu. The suspects allegedly tried to evade the team, but police stopped the car and thrashed the driver, as visible in the video recorded by local residents, they added. Meanwhile, allegations have circulated on social media that a police team led by a sub-inspector is harassing the public in that area. Following the growing controversy, police released their response video on Thursday.
In another video that has also been circulating, the same sub-inspector can be seen confronting members of the DMK party at the Townhall on Tuesday. The issue flared up after AIADMK men installed a flex poster in front of the logo of DMK's 'Oraniyil Tamil Nadu' campaign. The video shows a DMK functionary accusing the police officer of working in favour of the AIADMK MLA SP Velumani and behaving like a goon. The functionary allegedly threatens the officer to have him dismissal from his position.
Police sources said that the officer is being targeted by certain people by spreading these videos.

VCK hopes to convince DMK govt. to enact law against caste hatred crimes
The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi is hopeful that it could prevail upon the DMK government to enact a legislation to deal with crimes driven by caste hatred in the next Assembly session, against the backdrop of the recent murder of a Scheduled Caste youth, Kavin Selvaganesh, in Tirunelveli district. Earlier, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin had contended in the Assembly that existing laws were adequate to deal with such crimes. VCK sources said the party had been working diligently behind the scenes to convince the DMK leadership to enact a special legislation. At the same time, a section felt the State government was lenient in implementing laws to protect the Scheduled Castes, and wondered why the DMK didn't think of the community as a 'vote bank' like the OBCs. VCK general secretary D. Ravikumar told The Hindu that while the DMK government had introduced significant development schemes that benefit the Scheduled Caste communities directly and indirectly, it cannot ignore the constitutional duty of protecting them. 'The government has ensured development of Scheduled Castes in terms of their education and encouraging entrepreneurship. It has created infrastructure, introduced scholarships for Dalits, and these schemes will have a long-lasting impact. It has also introduced entrepreneurship schemes such as Dr. Annal Ambedkar Business Champions Scheme, besides reserving government contracts for SCs. Even reserved Panchayats have their own special schemes for development. Other welfare schemes – Magalir Urimai Thogai, free bus travel, Pudhumai Penn – overwhelmingly benefit Scheduled Castes and Most Backward Classes,' he said. However, he felt development without ensuring equality was pointless. Mr. Ravikumar said the continuation of atrocities and caste killings will stop the development initiatives of the State government. 'Economic or educational development may be a choice of the government, but the State government is bound to ensure equality constitutionally,' he said.

DMK, AIADMK make Athikadavu-Avinashi project phase- II promise to woo voters
COIMBATORE: Phase-II of the Athikadavu-Avinashi ground water recharge project has become a trending topic for the ruling DMK and the opposition AIADMK to woo voters in Erode, Tirupur, and Coimbatore districts. The previous AIADMK govt began work on the Phase-I of the Athikadavu-Avinashi groundwater recharging project in 2019. It was implemented in 2024. It was was designed as a pumping scheme to lift surplus water from the Bhavani river downstream of Kalingarayan anicut, just above its confluence point with the Cauvery river. It received a positive response from the farming community in the three districts. The DMK govt is also keen on implementing Phase-II of the project. Addressing reporters at Bhavani in Erode district, minister for housing and urban development S Muthusamy said the state government had initiated a feasibility study for implementing Phase-II of the scheme. 'Phase-II of the Athikadavu project will be completely different from Phase-I. After the feasibility study is completed by a private company, the report will be sent to the chief minister for further discussion,' said the minister. AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, who started his election campaign from Mettupalayam last month, said his party would implement the Phase-II project once it comes to power after the 2026 assembly elections.

'The DMK has no history of doing good. Whenever they come to power, commission, correction and collection become their guiding principle and corruption seeps into every department in the State,' charged AIADMK general secretary and former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami. Speaking on his Makkalai Kappom, Tamizhagathai Meetpom roadshow in Kovilpatti on Friday, he said that the current DMK regime is anti-people. 'The public is eagerly awaiting the removal of this government. In the 2026 elections, the AIADMK-BJP alliance will win and form the government under the AIADMK leadership,' he asserted. He added that DMK and its allies were spreading false propaganda that BJP will eventually swallow AIADMK. 'But it was clear after we allied with BJP, that DMK has started declining,' Mr. Palaniswami said. They are also labelling the BJP as a communal party, yet in 1999 DMK allied with the BJP and won. 'When DMK allied with BJP, it was not considered a communal party. But when AIADMK allies with BJP, they spread false slander to gain political mileage. Every party should operate based on principles and AIADMK does. But DMK and its allies lack any ideological clarity' Mr. Palaniswami noted. He further criticized the law and order situation in the State claiming that the Tamil Nadu police, once compared to Scotland Yard, now functions as a tool of DMK's orders. 'Even the police officers are not safe in the State, how can they ensure the safety of the public?' he questioned. BJP State President Nainar Nagenthran, who shared the stage with Mr. Palaniswami, described the AIADMK-BJP alliance as a 'natural partnership,' stating that public support for the campaign was growing steadily, indicating the people's strong desire for regime change. This campaign, led by Mr. Palaniswami aims to bring a political transformation in Tamil Nadu, added Mr. Nagenthran.
