#Reportback: Repeated water failures leave residents high and dry
A repair job on a critical water line on the R102 bridge between Darnall and Stanger, which was meant to be completed within 16 hours, dragged on for over three days.
It left residents without water from Wednesday to Saturday. Although water was eventually restored on Saturday, the temporary fix had already failed just two days later.
This has resulted in millions of litres of water being wasted and yet another contractor being called in to redo the repair. It is nothing short of unacceptable.
The lack of communication and absence of alternative supply measures, such as water tankers during the outage, reflects a clear dereliction of duty by the iLembe District Municipality.
The DA has been pressing for answers and action, including writing to the municipal manager regarding the absence of water tankers and contingency plans and calling for the urgent resuscitation of the Umvoti Water Works project.
While we have received a response indicating some progress on the Umvoti initiative, much more needs to be done to resolve the systemic issues plaguing our water supply.
The people of KwaDukuza deserve better. The DA will continue to hold Umgeni Waterworks and the municipality accountable for their failures and will push for meaningful, lasting solutions to this crisis.

WATCH: Hang out for charity on the ZO wash line
WATCH: Hang out for charity on the ZO wash line The countdown is on for the ZO's most heart-warming tradition – the 12th annual Hang out with Madiba charity drive. This Mandela Day on Friday, 18 July, the ZO team is once again stringing up washing lines and calling on the community to donate winter clothing, blankets, toiletries and non-perishable foods between 7.30am and 12 noon. The drop-off points will be the newspaper's offices at 3 Baines Road, Empangeni, and in the open space between the Civic Centre and East Central Arterial in Richards Bay where washing lines will also be erected. Clubs, schools and businesses are encouraged to erect their own charity lines on the day. By spending 67 minutes of your time collecting these items from your home and making a charitable delivery at the lines, or volunteering at the lines, you will be warming someone's cold winter. These 67 minutes honour the 67 years Nelson Mandela spent fighting for justice, equality and freedom. Let his legacy of kindness live on by hanging out for a good cause. The donations will be distributed via the ZO's charity arm Dice (Do I Care Enough?) to needy organisations and communities. Clothes collected on the day supply Dice and the city's Disaster Management unit for an entire year. The ZO has again partnered with the City of uMhlathuze, Rotary Clubs of Empangeni and Richards Bay, as well as Concord Access Solutions to ensure this winter is warmer for the needy. You CAN make a difference! Dice operations manager Karen Dalton shared the NPO's top needs: · Men's and teen boys' clothing, especially size small · Winter warmth: blankets, beanies, scarves for winter · Toiletries: soap, toothpaste, sanitary pads and toilet paper · Non-perishable items: packet soups, 2-minute noodles, porridge, maize meal, samp and beans, tea and sugar, or anything in the grocery cupboards at home, like canned goods There will be donation boxes at the drop-off points on Madiba Day. The Dice team also requests that the clothing be clean and in good condition, to avoid time-consuming efforts to mend or wash clothes. Unable to get to the ZO charity line on Madiba Day? Call Dave Savides on 060 9719249 or Karen Dalton on 035 7990500 or email [email protected]. Let us know how you are spending your 67 minutes! Planned power outage to affect Blackheath, Risidale, and Northcliff
A scheduled power outage will impact parts of Johannesburg next week as City Power undertakes critical maintenance at the Roosevelt Park substation. The planned interruption is set for July 15, and will affect the suburbs of Blackheath, Risidale, and Northcliff. Electricity will be cut from 08:30 in the morning until 16:00 in the afternoon, during which technicians will carry out essential work on the network. According to City Power, this maintenance forms part of a broader effort to improve infrastructure reliability and ensure a more consistent supply of electricity across affected areas. While the interruption is scheduled for a specific window, officials have advised residents to treat all electrical points as live throughout the day. Power could be restored earlier than expected, depending on the progress of the work. Follow us on our Whatsapp channel, Facebook, X, Instagram, and TikTok for the latest updates and inspiration! Landscaper digs in with councillor to refresh Lonehill Shopping Centre entrance
Local landscaper Liz Budd has brought a breath of fresh air to the Lonehill Shopping Centre, quite literally, by transforming the once-overgrown verges into a charming, low-maintenance green space, with a little help from Ward 94 councillor David Foley. Budd, a Lonehill resident and passionate gardener, recently joined Foley's clean-up efforts, aimed at restoring order and pride to public spaces around the shopping centre. What began as a routine verge clearing quickly bloomed into something more. 'I thought it would be lovely if we didn't just clean them up, but actually planted some new greenery, something water-wise and easy to look after,' said Budd. Over the past few weeks, Budd has introduced hardy, low-maintenance plants, such as Agapanthus and garlic plants, to the soil along the shopping centre's verges, selections she says are both visually pleasing and sustainable. 'We planted a little bit on the other verges, and we're planning to do more. It's going to look very beautiful. I hope people who drive through, into the shopping centre, see how beautiful it is.' The improvements haven't gone unnoticed. Budd says she's already received encouraging feedback from the community. 'I got a very nice message from one of the residents who said it looks really great.' Budd also credited Foley for his ongoing support and hands-on involvement in community upliftment projects. 'David is such a champ. Very nice to work with. I'm really grateful for him to participate.' Also read: Douglasdale community garden blooms as Informal Taxi Rank closes Foley thanked everyone involved and encouraged further support. 'Many thanks for the plant donations, and to Budd for pots, and her team doing the labour. The entrance is starting to look good, as you enter the shopping area off Lonehill Boulevard. 'We still need more Agapanthus, if you can spare them. They can be dropped off at 5 Arnhiem Circle, Lonehill. Thank you.'
