Middlesbrough's Linthorpe Road cycle lane removal work due to start
Last summer, the lane was dubbed "an absolute disaster" by the owner of Madame Rouge vintage pub and tearooms, with other traders reporting falling custom due to a shortage of parking and drop-off access.Other concerns centred around several cyclists and pedestrians being injured while using the new layout, which was paid for using £1.7m of government funding, given to the council by the TVCA, aimed at encouraging active travel.Labour's Cooke said: "After listening to businesses and residents I pledged the cycle lane would go. "We do want to encourage more people to cycle and walk, but future schemes have to be in the right place and learn the lessons from this saga."

Mikel Arteta breaks silence on Arsenal's transfer plans for the rest of the summer after sealing £64m Viktor Gyokeres move
Mikel Arteta teased that there could be more to come from Arsenal in this summer's transfer window after the Gunners' finally sealed Viktor Gyokeres' £63.5million signing. Arsenal put an end to their two-month saga with Sporting CP on Saturday, announcing the Sweden international's arrival, before unveiling him before their pre-season game against Newcastle less than 24 hours later. Also joining Arteta's ranks for the 2025-26 season are Martin Zubimendi, Noni Madueke, Cristian Mosquera, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Christian Norgaard. Arteta had bemoaned the club's inability to supply him with more firepower in the January transfer window, but the financial backing has been strong for him in the first summer under new sporting director Andrea Berta, who replaced Edu. Despite already securing six new players and their summer spending almost eclipsing £200m, Arteta hinted that the north London club may not stop at Gyokeres. When asked if their business is done, he said: 'Let's see. The market is still going on and we'll have to balance out the squad as well. I think we'll be open to see what happens.' Reports earlier this week stated that Arsenal are preparing a £60m approach for Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze. The midfielder is understood to favour a move to the Emirates, with many close to the situation confident a transfer will go through in the coming weeks. Furthermore, while Eze's signing does not hinge on this, Arsenal would prefer to sell one of their assets before splurging on new players. So far, the club have only recouped £7m from departures, with Nuno Tavares and Marquinhos departing for around £4.5m and £2.5m respectively.

Luis Diaz to LEAVE Liverpool tour as Bayern Munich agree £65million deal to bolster Reds' Alexander Isak kitty
LIVERPOOL are set to bank an extra £65million for their Alexander Isak fund after Bayern Munich agreed to sign Luis Diaz. The Reds winger told Arne Slot earlier this summer that he wanted to explore a move away from Anfield. 3 Diaz, 28, is in Asia with Liverpool on their pre-season tour but was left out of the squad for their friendly against AC Milan. Slot later confirmed that the forward had been left out due to speculation over his future. And now Liverpool have given Diaz permission to leave the tour after agreeing a deal with Bayern. The Premier League champion's twice failed in attempts to convince Diaz into signing a new deal. The sale, with Darwin Nunez also expected to leave this summer, will help raise funds for the Premier League champions to continue their incredible spending spree. Liverpool have already spent £201m since winning the title, including a club-record £100m deal for Florian Wirtz, who was a target for Bayern. Despite also landing French striker Hugo Ekitike, an audacious move for Isak cannot be ruled out. The £120m-rated Swede has been left out of Newcastle's pre-season tour to Singapore having also been sent home from their training camp in Scotland. Isak, who scored 23 Premier League goals last season, has informed the Magpies of his desire to move this summer. However, Eddie Howe and the Saudi Arabian owners are digging their heels in and insist their star man is not for sale. Liverpool, though, are considering testing that resolve with a bid and will be in a stronger position with Diaz sold. Vincent Kompany wanted to add a forward following Thomas Muller's departure and Jamal Musiala's horrific leg and ankle break during the Club World Cup. Diaz was a target for Barcelona before they landed Marcus Rashford, while the German giants had already seen one bid rejected. While Liverpool are still exploring forward options, Slot has insisted he is happy with his three centre-backs after Jarrell Quansah was sold to Bayer Leverkusen. The Reds hold an interest in Marc Guehi but have not lodged a formal approach for the Crystal Palace captain. Slot said: 'I don't think we have a concern at centre-back. "In terms of depth? I think Ryan [Gravenberch] showed against Milan that he can play in that position. "He did it last season as well. Although we all know we favour him as a No 6. Wata [Endo] can play there. Joe Gomez only has a minor injury.' 3

Telecoms boss lands record £131m payday
The boss of a little-known UK telecoms business was handed a record £131m last year, marking the highest-ever package paid by a London-listed business. Eamonn O'Hare, who runs Zegona Communications, received a £129m bonus in 2024, on top of £2m in annual pay and benefits. The company's operations chief, Robert Samuelson, also took home a total package of £66m. By contrast, the average remuneration for an FTSE 100 chief executive last year was £4.2m. The lucrative pay awards were made after Zegona acquired Vodafone's Spanish arm for £4.4bn last year. Mr O'Hare and Mr Samuelson, both former Virgin Media executives, launched Zegona a decade ago to buy up struggling assets in the telecoms sector and turn them around. Zegona went public in 2015 with a float on London's AIM junior exchange, when it raised £30m. However, its value has since soared after undertaking a series of deals, buying up unloved assets and selling them on for profit.
