Nvidia becomes world's most valuable company
Nvidia
has become the world's most valuable publicly traded company, overtaking
Microsoft
on Tuesday, June 3. The chipmaker's stock rose nearly 3% to $141.40, pushing its market value to $3.45 trillion. Microsoft, by comparison, ended the day with a market cap of $3.44 trillion.
This isn't the first time Nvidia has topped the list. The company has been swapping places with Apple and Microsoft since June last year, and last held the top spot on January 24.
Nvidia's rapid growth comes largely from its dominance in
artificial intelligence chips
, which are widely used in training advanced AI systems like ChatGPT. Big tech companies including Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Meta, Oracle, and Elon Musk's xAI have been buying Nvidia's AI chips in large numbers to power massive data centers.
Last week, Nvidia reported strong earnings with sales of $44.06 billion in the first quarter — a 69% jump compared to the same time in 2024.
When Nvidia CEO said starting a company is harder than it seems
Nvidia CEO Jensen Hunag, along with Chris Malachowsky and Curtis Priem, founded Nvidia in 1993. Speaking on the Acquired Podcast recently, Huang was asked what type of company he would start if he had the chance to do it all over again. Responding to the question, he replied 'I wouldn't'. Adding further, he stated "Building a company and building Nvidia turned out to have been a million times harder than any of us expected it to be'.
He continued: 'And at the time, if we realized the pain and suffering and just how vulnerable you're going to feel and the challenges that you're going to endure, the embarrassment and the shame, and the list of all the things that go wrong—I don't think anybody would start a company. Nobody in their right mind would do it'.

Anthropic CEO mocks Mark Zuckerberg's poaching tactics: ‘Something that can't be bought'

Amid reports of Meta's recent poaching attempts on Apple, OpenAI and Google staff, AI startup Anthropic has claimed that it is not matching competing offers to retain its employees. Speaking on the "Big Technology Podcast", Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei revealed he recently sent a Slack message to all his employees and told them that the company would not "compromise our compensation principles" or "principles of fairness" when any of them receive offers from other countries. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said that his goal was to bring superintelligence to every individual.(AFP) Calling Meta's poaching attempts a "unifying moment," he added that matching such offers would be unfair to the other employees. "If Mark Zuckerberg throws a dart at a dartboard and it hits your name, that doesn't mean that you should be paid 10 times more than the guy next to you who's just as skilled, just as talented," he said. He also added that compared to other companies, Meta's offers had captured fewer Anthropic employees, with some refusing to "even talk" to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. However, the tech giant did poach Anthropopic software engineer Joel Pobar. According to media reports, Meta has offered more than $200 million in compensation to one Apple AI researcher to work on his superintelligence team. Amodei also attacked Zuckerberg, accusing him of "trying to buy something that can't be bought", referring to the AI company's mission. The Meta CEO, meanwhile, has said that his goal was to bring superintelligence to every individual through his new lab and not use AI to automate the workforce like "others in the industry".

Bad news for Elon Musk as Tesla asked to pay Rs 21190320470 for..., company's autopilot tech under fire due to...

Elon Musk (File) Tesla accident: In a major setback for Tesla CEO Elon Musk, a US court has ordered the automaker to pay a whopping $243 million (about Rs 2,119 crore) to victims of a fatal 2019 accident, which was reportedly caused by a malfunction in the Tesla's patented autopilot driver-assistant technology. What did the victims say? The families of the victims have accused Tesla's autopilot system of being partly responsible for the crash that left 22-year-old Naibel Benavides Leon dead, while her boyfriend, Dillon Angulo sustained grievous injuries. According to the prosecution, the Tesla car, which was on Autopilot, collided with the victims' vehicle, which parked on the roadside as the young couple were star gazing late at night. The Tesla driver confessed he was distracted by his cell phone, but the jury believes that Tesla's malfunctioning autopilot tech was also partly responsible for the tragedy, and must pay damages to the victims. How much damages will Tesla pay? As per the court order, Tesla has been ordered to pay $200 million in punitive damages and $59 million in compensatory damages to Leon's family, while Angulo was awarded a $70 million compensation. The court observed that moral responsibility must be imposed if and when a tragedy is caused by technology malfunction, such as the failure of a driver-assist or autopilot system. It noted that companies must shoulder responsibility in such cases, even if human-error is involved. Notably, its believed that Tesla has previously settled similar cases out of court or had them dismissed before trial, however, this case breaks that pattern, and will encourage others to seek justice against big corporations. Did Tesla bury evidence of malfunction? Meanwhile, the victims' counsel also accused Elon Musk-led Tesla of hiding crucial evidence in the case, including video and data recorded moments before the fatal accident. Tesla told the court that the video footage did not exist, but a forensic expert managed to dig up the data, following which the company termed it as an 'honest mistake'. Why is this a concern for Elon Musk? The court order against Tesla comes at a time when Elon Musk is preparing to launch a fleet of driverless Tesla taxis in several US cities. The court ruling also brings Tesla's autopilot system, which it claimed has been improved since the 2019 accident, under further scrutiny.
