2024 Women's AFCON: Nigeria stages comeback against Morocco to clinch 10th title
Nigeria's Super Falcons captured their tenth continental title in the 2024 Women's AFCON final on Saturday, July 26, at Rabat's Olympic Stadium. Facing host nation Morocco's Atlas Lionesses, the Nigerians pulled off a stunning comeback after trailing 2-0 at halftime.
The Olympic Stadium in Rabat set the stage for a highly anticipated final between Morocco and Nigeria. The Atlas Lionesses, in pursuit of their first-ever continental crown, faced the daunting task of toppling the Super Falcons' dominance, as Nigeria entered the clash boasting nine titles.
Morocco starts strong and stuns Nigeria
The 2024 Women's AFCON final kicked off at a blistering pace with a confident Moroccan side. By the 12th minute, Ghizlane Chebbak unleashed a long-range strike that found the bottom left corner.
The Lionesses doubled their lead just twelve minutes later through Sanaâ Mssoudy, expertly set up by Ibtissam Jraïdi after a swift move in the box. The Nigerian side looked rattled, unable to contain the relentless Moroccan attacks. With a two-goal cushion at halftime, Jorge Vilda's squad seemed destined to fulfill their dream of a maiden continental triumph.
Super Falcons awaken: 10 finals, 10 titles
After the break, Nigeria tightened up and took the initiative. In the 60th minute, a penalty was awarded following a handball by Nouhaila Benzina. Esther Okoronkwo held her nerve and pulled one back for her side. Ten minutes later, she turned provider, setting up Folashade Ijamilusi who leveled the score with a clinical cross-shot. Nigeria drew level at 2-2 and kept the pressure on.
As regulation time wound down and Morocco began to tire, the Super Falcons kept up the intensity. In the 88th minute, Okoronkwo, once again, threaded a pass through to Joe Echegini, who finished calmly. That third goal sealed the outcome of a breathless final. Nigeria clinched their tenth continental crown in dramatic fashion, shattering the Atlas Lionesses' dream of a historic first title.

Ex-Arsenal man's contract cancelled

Ex-Arsenal man, David Luiz, has terminated his contract with Fortaleza just seven months after signing, with the 38‑year‑old set to return to Europe to join Pafos. Photo byThe Brazilian defender had agreed a deal with Fortaleza running until December 2026 but made only 17 appearances before mutually agreeing to leave, having struggled with injuries that hampered his ability to establish himself in Renato Paiva's side. He is currently out with a thigh injury he picked up at the start of July. According to Brazilian outlet Globoesporte, Luiz has already agreed terms with Cypriot champions Pafos and is expected to sign a contract through to 2028, linking up with Domingos Quina, Pêpê Rodrigues and Alexandre Brito as the club prepares for their UEFA Champions League play‑off against Dynamo Kyiv. The move marks Luiz's return to European football since leaving Arsenal for Flamengo in 2021 and, as he will be 41 when the deal ends, looks to represent his final transfer. Photo by Tolga AKMEN / AFP He joined Arsenal from Chelsea in August 2019 for £8 million, making 73 appearances, scoring four goals and helping the club win the 2019–20 FA Cup and 2020 Community Shield. In total, even though his last two moves have been on a free, he has commanded a total of €118.7m in transfer fees through out his career, with Chelsea paying €60m of that themselves across two moves. While praised by Mikel Arteta, who he played for 55 times, for his leadership and influence on younger players, Luiz's time at Arsenal was also notable for many defensive lapses, including a Premier League record five penalties conceded in one season. He left when his contract expired in June 2021, before spending three successful years at Flamengo, winning the Copa Libertadores and domestic silverware, then moving to Fortaleza in January.

All-Pro Zach Allen agrees to 4-year, $102M extension with Broncos, AP source says

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos are signing All-Pro defensive lineman Zach Allen to a four-year deal worth $102 million, a person with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press on Saturday. Speaking to the AP on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk publicly, the person said the deal includes about $70 million in guarantees. Allen is the second veteran to sign a big extension with the Broncos this summer. Earlier this week, wide receiver Courtland Sutton signed a four-year, $92 million deal that included $41 million in guaranteed money. A third-round pick by Arizona out of Boston College in 2019, Allen joined the Broncos two years ago, following defensive coordinator Vance Joseph to Denver. He had five sacks in his first season in Denver and a career-best 8 1/2 sacks last season when he earned second-team All-Pro honors. Allen, who turns 28 this month, also set career bests last year with 15 tackles for loss and 40 quarterback hits. Other Broncos angling for new contracts this summer include rising star linebacker Nik Bonitto and defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers. ___ AP NFL:

Cagliari have shown a strong interest in Esposito's signature. However, the talks with Inter have slowed down a bit. Then, Fiorentina are also reportedly eyeing up a deal to sign Esposito. According to La Nuova Sardegna, though, Cagliari are re-emerging as suitors for the 23-year-old striker.
