White Sox look to shut down Guardians' catalysts again

Chicago White Sox pitching has limited Cleveland Guardians catalysts Steven Kwan and Jose Ramirez to 2-for-17 with three strikeouts through the first two games of a four-game weekend set.
While the host White Sox have just one victory to show for those efforts as the series continues Saturday afternoon, they figure executing the plan beats the alternative.
'We know those guys are outstanding players and they're going to be a challenge for us,' Chicago manager Will Venable said on the White Sox team broadcast. 'So we do our best and attack them the best we can and hope for good results.'
Cleveland and Chicago split a doubleheader on Friday. The White Sox rallied from a late deficit to win the nightcap 5-4 in 11 innings on Mike Tauchman's infield single, which drove in Colson Montgomery.
Ramirez hit a two-run homer in Game 2 and has four homers in his past five games.
Guardians pitchers yielded just two hits in the opener while Cleveland hit three home runs. The decisive, two-run blast came off the bat of Carlos Santana, who's in his third stint with the club and hopes to mirror his past as a clutch contributor after struggling for much of the first half of the season.
Santana endured an 0-for-15 stretch this month but said he feels he's starting to turn things around.
'It's a long season,' he said. 'All of my career, I've finished strong. I'm a second-half player. I know the team needs me. ... I try to prepare through the All-Star break now, keep working on my swing, work on my body. I don't worry. Check my numbers in September. I'm confident.'
As for the White Sox, while his long-term future with the team is less certain given rumored trade talks, center fielder Luis Robert Jr. also is working through extended struggles.
Robert Jr., who was reinstated from the 10-day injured list (left hamstring strain) Tuesday, connected for a two-run home run in the opener Friday. His nine home runs are one behind team co-leaders Andrew Benintendi and Miguel Vargas.
'It's just getting into the game rhythm,' Robert said. 'It's an adjustment. But I feel good, and when my body is asking me for more, I'll go for more.'
Cleveland's Tanner Bibee (4-9, 4.35 ERA) is set to start Saturday against Sean Burke (4-8, 4.40) in a matchup of right-handers. Bibee has been ineffective in his first two July starts, going 0-1 with a 9.35 ERA. He took a no-decision at Houston on Monday, scattering four runs and four hits -- including a pair of home runs -- in 4 2/3 innings of Cleveland's 7-5 victory.
Bibee is 1-0 with a 6.55 ERA in two career starts against the White Sox with eight strikeouts and five walks in 11 innings.
Burke will aim for his first victory against the Guardians in his third appearance and second start against them. He lost an April 9 start in Cleveland 3-2 after spacing three runs and three hits in three innings. That included a solo home run from Santana.
Burke took an 8-4 loss on Monday in a home start against the Toronto Blue Jays, yielding three home runs among his six runs and six hits in five innings.
Cleveland's Angel Martinez has an extra-base hit in six straight games.

Blue Jays' Vladimir Guerrero Jr. out to add to milestone against A's

(Photo credit: Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images) Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is in his seventh big league season but still only 26. He's also the newest member of the Blue Jays' 1,000-hit club, and he will look to add a few more to the total when Toronto visits the Athletics on Saturday night in the middle contest of a three-game series at West Sacramento, Calif. Guerrero is just the 10th player to reach 1,000 for the Blue Jays. He got there with a single in the fifth inning of Friday's 7-6 victory and added another hit later in the contest. 'It means a lot,' Guerrero said in a postgame interview with Sportsnet. 'It's a blessing. I have to thank God for helping me get to 1,000 hits.' The late Tony Fernandez is Toronto's all-time leader with 1,583 hits. Barring injury or a trade, Guerrero should surpass Fernandez later this decade. Guerrero's more immediate focus in on helping the Blue Jays continue their strong play. Toronto has won 11 of 12 games and holds a two-game lead over the New York Yankees in the American League East. Meanwhile, the Athletics scored three times in the ninth on Friday to give Toronto a scare. But Nick Kurtz struck out against Jeff Hoffman to end it. Earlier this season, Kurtz delivered two walk-off homers during a four-game series against the Houston Astros. 'The kid can't come through every time,' Athletics manager Mark Kotsay said. 'The fight is there by the club and showed it by getting him up to the plate in the ninth inning as the winning run.' The A's unraveled earlier in the game. Toronto's six-run fifth inning was helped by second baseman Zack Gelof's throwing error and the club's failure to execute during a Blue Jays double-steal attempt. George Springer was on third when Guerrero took off for second. Catcher Shea Langeliers threw to second and shortstop Max Muncy caught the ball in front of the bag and threw home. Muncy one-hopped the throw and Langeliers wasn't able to glove it as Springer scored. 'If we play catch, Springer is out by 30 feet,' Kotsay said. 'That's the inning where the game got away from us. It seems to be when we make a mistake, it is compounded by a couple of hits and the inning keeps going.' The A's hope to have All-Star shortstop Jacob Wilson back on Saturday. He was hit by a pitch on his left hand on Tuesday and has missed the past three games. The Blue Jays will send right-hander Kevin Gausman (6-6, 4.13 ERA) to the mound on Saturday. Gausman, 34, has just one victory in his past seven starts. That triumph came when he blanked the Cleveland Guardians on two hits over eight innings in a 6-0 win on June 26. Gausman wasn't involved in the decision when he started Toronto's 8-4 victory over the Athletics on June 1. He is 1-2 with a 2.25 ERA in seven career starts against the Athletics. Left-hander Jacob Lopez (2-5, 4.26) will start for the A's. Lopez was pounded while lasting just 1 2/3 innings against the Blue Jays in Toronto on May 29. He allowed seven runs and six hits in the 12-0 loss, serving up a three-run homer to Ernie Clement and a two-run shot to Guerrero. Lopez is 1-1 with a 15.43 ERA in two career starts against the Blue Jays. --Field Level Media

Braves place third baseman Austin Riley on 10-day injured list with an abdominal strain

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The Atlanta Braves placed two-time All-Star third baseman Austin Riley on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a strained right abdomen. Riley was lifted for a pinch hitter in the fourth inning of the Braves' 6-5 win at St. Louis on Friday night. Riley is hitting .274 this season and entered Saturday ranked third in the NL with 104 hits, behind Trea Turner and Manny Machado. He has hit 14 home runs with 48 RBIs. He was an All-Star in 2022 and 2023. The Braves recalled infielder Nacho Alvarez Jr. from Triple-A Gwinnett. Alvarez, who appeared in eight games for the Braves last July, was hitting .361 in 11 games with Gwinnett. He was a fifth-round draft pick in 2022. Atlanta also activated left-handed pitcher Joey Wentz after selecting him on waivers from Minnesota. Right-hander Nathan Wiles was optioned to Gwinnett.
