Pakistan's mangrove carbon market: $20m to $50m annual potential unlocked
In a message on the occasion of the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem, the minister said Sindh's Delta Blue Carbon project, covering over 350,000 hectares, has already generated $40 million in carbon credit sales and projects to generate billions over the coming decades.
'Given Balochistan's significantly smaller mangrove area cover about 4,058 hectares and similar carbon sequestration value per hectare, its annual potential would be proportionally less but still meaningful as part of Pakistan's broader carbon market strategy', he added.
The Delta Blue Carbon (DBC) project is a public-private partnership between the Government of Sindh and Indus Delta Capital, launched in 2015. It aims to restore and protect mangrove forests across more than 3,500 square kilometers of the Indus Delta.
Highlighting the project's global significance, the minister noted that millions of carbon credits are being generated through mangrove forests in Sindh's coastal belt. 'Mangroves absorb four times more carbon compared to ordinary trees,' he said, underlining their unmatched value in climate mitigation.
'We are successfully implementing mangrove rehabilitation programs in Sindh and Balochistan, and these coastal forests are proving to be a vital natural shield against shoreline erosion and flooding,' he noted.
The minister said future of our fisheries, coastal tourism, and sustainable resource management is deeply connected with the health of mangrove ecosystems as their decline, conversely, threatens the foundations of these vital sectors and the well being of coastal communities.

Unskilled workers: Sindh notifies minimum monthly wage
KARACHI: The Government of Sindh has officially notified a minimum monthly wage of Rs. 40,000 for unskilled workers employed across all industrial and commercial establishments in the province, effective from July 01, 2025. Provincial Labour Minister Shahid Abdul Salam Thaheem, while announcing the revised wage structure, said the minimum monthly salary for semi-skilled workers has been set at Rs. 41,380, for skilled workers at Rs. 49,628, and for highly skilled workers at Rs. 51,745. These revised rates are applicable across all registered and unregistered establishments, ensuring equal pay for male and female workers. He further added that any establishment paying on an hourly basis must now ensure a minimum payment of Rs. 192 per hour for their workers. 'The Government of Sindh is committed to pro-labour policies and continues to take concrete steps to guarantee decent wages, improved working conditions, and the overall welfare of workers,' said the Minister. He emphasized that the wage revision aims to ease the economic burden of inflation and promote a dignified livelihood for the working class.

Fisheries and Aquaculture Parks: Chinese businessmen seek initiating solarisation
ISLAMABAD: A high-level delegation of Chinese businessmen from the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce (ACFIC) has expressed strong interest in initiating the solarisation of Fisheries and Aquaculture Parks in Pakistan, said a press release. The initiative aims to ensure clean and uninterrupted energy for business operations, enhance efficiency, and attract greater international investment to Pakistan's ports. This development emerged during a meeting held in Islamabad on Wednesday between Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, and a five-member delegation led by Yi Jiang. The ACFIC serves as China's national chamber of commerce for private enterprises, working to promote public-private partnerships and support China's non-public economy. Its key focus areas include industry, trade, manufacturing, technology, and commerce. Speaking to the delegation, Minister Junaid Chaudhry highlighted Pakistan's commitment to harnessing the potential of its blue economy. He noted that the solarization of Fisheries and Aquaculture Parks would mark a significant step toward advancing sustainable maritime development under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) framework. The meeting reaffirmed Pakistan's resolve to develop environmentally sustainable infrastructure along its coastlines, especially in Gwadar, to unlock new opportunities in seafood processing, marine aquaculture, and logistics—critical components of the nation's blue economy strategy. The minister informed the delegation that Pakistan's blue economy is gaining momentum and contributed approximately USD 1 billion about 0.4% of the national GDP, in the fiscal year 2023–24. He also shared that seafood exports to China reached $125 million last year, signalling growing commercial collaboration between the two nations. Maritime Minister encouraged Chinese investors to explore opportunities in Gwadar's Free Zones. 'The South Free Zone is now fully operational with a modern 2,000-ton capacity cold storage facility,' he said. 'Simultaneously, development in the North Free Zone is progressing steadily.' He emphasised Gwadar Port's potential to emerge as a major regional logistics hub, owing to its strategic location and improving infrastructure. 'Our vision is to develop Gwadar into a clean, energy-efficient, and investor-friendly port,' he stated, reaffirming government support for renewable energy initiatives in the maritime sector. The Chinese delegation welcomed the minister's proposals and discussed potential avenues for collaboration in trade logistics and port operations. 'Gwadar's location near key sea routes, coupled with the incentives offered by Pakistan, makes it an ideal transshipment gateway,' one delegation member noted. Both sides agreed to maintain regular engagement to translate their shared vision into tangible projects that enhance regional connectivity, trade facilitation, and sustainable development of Pakistan's coastal assets. Revised wages for workers announced

Labour Minister Shahid Abdul Salam Thaheem, while announcing the revised wage structure, said the minimum monthly salary for semi-skilled workers has been set at Rs41,380, for skilled workers at Rs49,628, and for highly skilled workers at Rs51,745. These revised rates are applicable across all registered and unregistered establishments, ensuring equal pay for male and female workers. He further added that any establishment paying on an hourly basis must now ensure a minimum payment of Rs192 per hour for their workers. The minister emphasised that the wage revision aims to ease the economic burden of inflation and promote a dignified livelihood for the working class. He also affirmed that the Labour Department remains in constant engagement with industrialists and will ensure strict implementation of labour laws across the board.
