Dasara jumbo Arjuna memorial inauguration postponed

Time of India5 days ago

Mysuru: The inaugural ceremony of the newly built memorial for Dasara elephant Arjuna at Balle elephant camp in Nagarahole Tiger Reserve (NTR) in HD Kote taluk was on Monday postponed suddenly.
It was rescheduled for June 27.
Forest minister Eshwar B Khandre was on his way to Balle from Bengaluru and reached Srirangapatna when he suddenly cancelled the event and returned to Bengaluru. While he cited personal reasons, it was alleged that HD Kote MLA Anil Chikkamadu, who is also chairperson of Jungle Lodges and Resorts (JLR), insisted the minister focus on the elephant problem in the area and asked him to hold a meeting with the foresters to discuss the issue.
However, sources close to the minister told TOI that Khandre returned to Bengaluru from Srirangapatna to attend to a medical emergency of a person close to the family. Along with the inauguration of Arjuna's memorial, he was scheduled to attend Basava Jayanti event at Saraguru town. The event was held in his absence. The minister was also scheduled to hold a meeting with officials of the department from Kodagu district in Balle.
The meeting was also cancelled.

Memorial for elephant Arjuna raises questions over violation of NTCA norms

The inauguration of a memorial for the famed Dasara elephant Arjuna at the Balle elephant camp in the D.B. Kuppe range of Nagarahole tiger reserve, has sparked a new controversy. The memorial – a life-size sculpture of elephant Arjuna, who died in an operation to capture a wild elephant in Hassan in 2023 – was inaugurated by the Minister for Forest, Ecology, and Environment Eshwar B. Khandre, on Friday. The Minister eulogised Arjuna for his contribution to forest operations and Dasara, and said he may not be physically present, but lives on in the hearts of Kannadigas. Though the Minister's gesture and the memorial is well-intended, it is a violation of standing guidelines issued by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) concerning interventions within core/critical tiger habitats. The communique issued on April 22, 2009, is a standing instruction to the field directors of all tiger reserves, and clause (V) of the communique explicitly states that 'since the core/critical tiger habitats are meant to be kept inviolate for tigers, artefacts like foundation stones, commemorative exhibits, signages, should not be constructed in such areas at any cost.' Drawing attention to the violation, photographer Pramod said that the NTCA communique is unequivocal on the issue. The Arjuna memorial, he said, was in contravention of the NTCA guidelines,as the camp and the memorial is located in the core critical area of Nagarahole Tiger Reserve. The memorial to Arjuna stands at a height of 2.98 metres, is 3.74 metres long, and weighs 650 kilograms. Mr. Pramod said that the D.B. Kuppe range is beset with habitat fragmentation and human-animal conflict, and the installation of a memorial abets the same. Similar questions have been raised with regard to the bust of Conservator of Forest Manikandan, which was unveiled in D.B. Kuppe in March this year. Manikandan was the director of the tiger reserve, and was trampled to death on March 3, 2018, by a wild tusker when he was on duty apprising himself of damage caused by a forest fire. Activists argue that his legacy would have been better perpetuated had the bust been installed at the forest department office rather than deep in the jungle, which is inaccessible to the public.

Gandhian ideals to find place in Dasara tableaux, says CM Siddaramaiah

'This year Dasara is falling on Gandhi Jayanti on October 2. So I have instructed officials that Dasara should be celebrated in a manner that makes Gandhi Jayanti meaningful. Especially the tableaux should reflect Gandhi's ideals,' the CM told reporters. He said Gandhi's philosophy should be suitably represented alongside the government's welfare schemes and achievements. Bengaluru, Jun 28 (PTI) As this year's Vijayadashami coincides with Gandhi Jayanti, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday directed officials that tableaux prepared for the Mysuru Dasara celebrations must reflect Mahatma Gandhi's ideals. Siddaramaiah briefed reporters after presiding over a high-level committee meeting at Vidhana Soudha on the preparations for Dasara-2025. The CM said the historical and cultural significance of the festival should not be overshadowed by sheer extravagance. He emphasised that unnecessary spending does not amount to grandeur and that public safety and convenience must be the top priority. 'This year, Dasara will begin on September 22 and culminate with the Jamboo Savari on October 2, making it an 11-day event instead of the usual 10,' the CM said. He emphasised that the programmes should be designed to uphold the rich cultural, religious, and historical traditions of the Mysuru Dasara, which is globally renowned. He stated that while Rs 40 crore was allocated last year, adequate funds will be provided this year as well to organise a grand celebration. He asked departments to plan meaningful exhibitions and displays to showcase government initiatives and guarantee schemes in a way that connects with the public. He also called for people-centric policies to be effectively communicated during the festivities. With more than 10 lakh people expected to attend, including foreign tourists, the CM directed officials to give the utmost attention to crowd management and safety measures. He said police personnel must be people-friendly and law and order should be maintained without any lapses. The number of seats in front of the Mysore Palace will be reduced this time to manage crowding during the Jamboo Savari. Officials were asked to ensure that there is no overcrowding at any of the programme venues. PTI GMS GMS KH This report is auto-generated from PTI news service.
