Gang exploited victims using artificial intelligence and fake loans

Time of India03-06-2025
New Delhi: Akshita, Jayshree, Pinki and Dimple led seemingly ordinary lives, but behind the facade, they allegedly harboured secrets that would shock their families and friends.
At work, they were telecallers who would ruthlessly target the vulnerable and the elderly by using artificial intelligence, trapping them into a vicious cycle of blackmail. Beyond office hours, the women donned an entirely different persona – a tightrope walk to balance their alleged illicit activities and their everyday lives.
Jayshree, a graduate from Alwar University, allegedly worked as a key player in a sextortion gang, using her charm to lure victims into compromising situations, police said.
"The racket comprised social media profile analysts, extortion callers and individuals impersonating police officers to intimidate victims with false legal threats unless they complied with extortion demands," said joint commissioner Surender Kumar.
These persons allegedly employed a deceitful method to lure and exploit victims. The modus operandi was to check profiles of prospective targets on social media and get them to chat.

After establishing a connection, they would suddenly initiate video calls with AI-generated models, and the background voice was of a female.
"During interrogation by ACP Anil Sharma, they disclosed that they would initially send friend requests on Facebook and Instagram and obtain the victim's mobile number through Facebook Messenger. Subsequently, they would initiate a video call on WhatsApp, during which they would stream obscene clips, secretly recording the victim's screen and reactions using screen recording tools," said DCP (crime) Aditya Gautam.
The recorded content was then used to blackmail the victim under threats of publicly circulating the video on social media platforms, thereby coercing them into transferring money, said police.
The sextortion gang, allegedly led by Jahid (20), targeted victims through compromising videos, with Jayshree (24), a former SBI BPO employee, making calls and luring victims into compromising situations. Raheesh (21), Sohil (18) and Jaiveer (24) were also part of this module, cops said.
Another modus operandi of the call centre was to trap people by offering fake bank loans. Initially, the telecallers, under directions from Dilshad Ali, contacted potential victims, offering them attractive loan deals. Once they gained the victim's trust, the telecaller would request identification and other personal documents via WhatsApp.
The victim was then asked to make a payment through a QR code scanner under the pretext of file processing fees.
After the payment was received, the victim's follow-up messages and calls were ignored. The fraudsters would then switch off their mobile devices and change their contact numbers, effectively cutting off all communication.
At the heart of the operation were Ujjawal Pandey (30) and Gaurav Barua (24), who allegedly masterminded the racket. Pandey, owner of a cyber café in Krishna Nagar, began selling fake account kits and SIM cards while Barua, a graduate from Ignou, facilitated pre-activated account kit transactions, said police.
Their partnership enabled the smooth functioning of the scam, with Yug Sharma (18) allegedly assisting in supplying fake SIM cards and account kits.
Ali employed several telecallers, including Saurav (27), Pravesh (28), Akshita (18), Raunak (24), Dimple (20) and Pinki (24), to pose as loan service representatives and dupe customers into divulging sensitive information.
Another key player, Amit, owned the call centres and is absconding. He also supervised operations, cops said.

Asian markets slip: Tariff talks cloud investor sentiment; US-China talks cast shadow

AI-generated representative image Asian markets broadly declined on Tuesday, as initial optimism surrounding newly proposed trade agreements with Japan and the European Union by US President Donald Trump began to fade. Japan's Nikkei 225 slipped nearly 0.7 per cent to 40,725.23, while Australia's S&P/ASX 200 edged down 0.3 per cent to 8,670.50. South Korea's Kospi managed to recover from earlier losses, ending flat with a marginal gain of less than 0.1 per cent at 3,212.59. In China, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index dropped 1.1 per cent to 25,276.36, and the Shanghai Composite fell 0.3 per cent to 3,586.93. Analysts said investors turned cautious as attention shifted to ongoing trade discussions between the US and China. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent met with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng in Sweden, though no major breakthroughs were reported. Bessent suggested that existing tariff levels would likely remain in place. 'Aside from addressing economic imbalances, tariffs are also now well entrenched in the geo-political arena,' said Tan Boon Heng of Mizuho Bank's Asia & Oceania Treasury Department. Trump recently unveiled a new trade framework with Japan, proposing a 15 per cent import tax- lower than the previously floated 25 per cent. Under the deal, Japan agreed to invest $550 billion in the US and expand access to its automotive and rice markets, though finer details are still pending. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 20 Historic Cars Every Enthusiast Should Know Undo Meanwhile, the US and the EU struck a deal to impose 15 per cent tariffs on cars and other goods, again lower than earlier threats. Despite the announcements, many trade details remain unresolved, keeping investors on edge. US markets ended Monday relatively stable, with investors awaiting the Federal Reserve's upcoming interest rate decision on Wednesday. Wall Street broadly expects the Fed to delay any rate cuts until September, although some Trump-appointed officials could dissent. The Fed has held rates steady throughout 2025 following a series of reductions late last year. Tech Rally Drives Momentum Technology and AI-linked stocks continued to lead the market. Tesla shares jumped 3 per cent after it announced a potential $16.5 billion semiconductor deal with Samsung Electronics. Samsung's stock in Seoul surged 6.8 per cent. Chipmakers saw broad gains following Alphabet's announcement of an $85 billion investment in AI chips and related initiatives. Advanced Micro Devices climbed 4.3 per cent, while Super Micro Computer surged 10.2 per cent. However, not all earnings updates impressed. Revvity shares plunged 8.3 per cent despite beating quarterly earnings expectations, as its full-year forecast fell short of analyst estimates. The result weighed on broader sentiment. Investors are watching closely as nearly one-third of S&P 500 companies are due to report quarterly results this week. Strong earnings are seen as critical to justifying recent stock rallies, which have been partly fuelled by tariff relief hopes. Some analysts, however, remain sceptical about elevated valuations without corresponding profit growth. Commodities and currency moves In energy markets, US crude edged up by 1 cent to $66.72 per barrel, while Brent crude added 6 cents to $70.10. On the currency front, the US dollar strengthened slightly to 148.56 Japanese yen from 148.54 yen. The euro ticked up to $1.1600 from $1.1593. TCS's 12,000 job cuts spark fears of larger IT layoffs

Representative image BENGALURU: TCS laying off over 12,000 mid- and senior-level employees has sent shockwaves across the tech industry. This move not just challenges the perception of TCS as a company known for job security and stability, but shows that India's IT sector is in the early stages of a significant reset. The industry is undergoing a structural shift, mirroring global trends where major tech firms are streamlining resources, improving cost efficiency, reallocating assets, and shutting down divisions that no longer align with strategic priorities. Margin Pressures: Industry experts attribute this transformation to mounting margin pressures, prompting companies to control costs by reducing headcount. Many believe that AI is disrupting the traditional workforce pyramid, replacing broad-based hiring models with leaner, more specialised structures which yield higher billing. As a result, the future of services will rely heavily on a blend of newer tech and human ingenuity, where billability is determined by the premium clients are willing to pay for niche skills rather than volume of resources. Bench Policy: TCS has said its restructuring efforts are aimed at making the company future-ready. As part of this initiative, sources told TOI the company has begun focusing on employees who have remained unbilled - commonly referred to as being on the "bench" - for extended periods, typically ranging from 3 to 18 months. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it better to shower in the morning or at night? This has sparked concerns within the industry over the potential for a wave of sudden and unexpected exits. Sudden Exits: Several employees who spoke to TOI on condition of anonymity said those impacted had been on the bench for anywhere between 3 and 18 months. In one case, an employee claimed she was called into a meeting where three HR representatives handed her a "discharge letter" and asked her to resign. "It was sudden and shocking. There was no prior intimation," she said. TCS, however, maintains that it has consistently offered relocation and retraining options to benched employees to enhance their chances of being deployed on projects. Meanwhile, lateral hires awaiting onboarding have reported uncertainty. In response to one such candidate, a TCS HR executive reportedly said, "Do not wait for TCS. New announcements are going on. We are helpless," suggesting that onboarding timelines are unclear amid ongoing changes. Campus Chaos: Indian campuses are facing a stark dichotomy - freshers without job offers on one side, and large salary packages on the other. The recent layoffs at TCS have sounded an alarm across the industry. Global capability centres (GCCs) continue to lead recruitment efforts as Indian IT companies adapt to a major transformation in the tech as upskilling becomes part of everyday work life, lower net additions are making engineering graduates anxious. Indian campuses today present a stark contrast: while some students receive lucrative offers, many others are left without any. For computer science students, the future is deeply intertwined with AI, offering exciting opportunities but also demanding rapid adaptation. Ramkumar Ramamoorthy, partner at tech growth advisory firm Catalincs, said, "In the context of digital and AI, there is a crying need for India to reimagine its higher education to stay relevant. Beyond STEM programmes, we must integrate AI across disciplines - liberal arts, law, medicine, management, and social sciences. The only way to do this at scale is through collaboration with experts and practitioners. Otherwise, we risk producing graduates who are misaligned with market needs, potentially leading to serious social implications. So Long Valley Producer Files Rs 10 Crore Defamation Suit Against Ruchi Gujjar

Last Updated: Filmmaker Man Singh filed a Rs 10 crore defamation lawsuit against Ruchi Gujjar, accusing her of disrupting the premiere of his film So Long Valley and causing a public scene. Filmmaker Man Singh, who has both directed and produced the recently released crime thriller So Long Valley, has filed a Rs 10 crore defamation lawsuit against actress Ruchi Gujjar. The legal move comes after a dramatic disruption during the film's premiere. Singh alleges that this was orchestrated to damage the project's reputation and hinder its success. The case accuses Gujjar of a coordinated attempt to sabotage the film. According to an official statement from the production, Gujjar is said to have paid Rs 20–30 lakh to an associate, Karan Chauhan, and allegedly pressured other cast members to withdraw from the film. Furthermore, she reportedly tried to halt the release altogether by approaching the court. However, the court rejected her plea, ruling that she had no contractual or financial ties with the production and thus no grounds to intervene. The matter escalated at the film's premiere on July 25, when Gujjar allegedly caused a public scene. She is reported to have thrown a sandal and a water bottle at Man Singh during the screening event. The Amboli Police subsequently registered an FIR against her and six others. In the video, Gujjar was heard screaming while arguing with the producers. She then lost her cool and hit one of the producers with her chappal. It appears that she arrived at the theatre with the intention of staging a protest. During the special screening, where the producers were present, Ruchi showed up along with a group of protestors. People around her were seen raising slogans against the producers. They held placards with the producers' photos, marked with red cross signs across their faces. In some of the posters, which can be seen in the video, the producers were depicted sitting on donkeys. Take a look at the now-viral videos here: View this post on Instagram A post shared by Bollywood News (@bolly_newssss) View this post on Instagram A post shared by SpotlightBollywood (@spotlightbolly) According to Ruchi, Chauhan had approached her last year claiming he was producing a Hindi television serial that would soon air on Sony TV. 'He offered to add me as a co-producer and also sent documents related to the project," she said, according to media reports. Believing the offer, Ruchi stated that between July 2023 and January 2024, she transferred several payments from her company, SR Event and Entertainment, into accounts linked to Chauhan's K Studios. However, the promised project never took off. 'Despite repeated contacts, he kept postponing them and lied," she added in her complaint. She claims to have discovered that the funds were allegedly used not for the serial, but for the production of So Long Valley. 'When I got the information that the film is releasing on July 27, I told him to return my money now, on which he started threatening me," she alleged. Speaking to the media after the incident, Singh condemned the actress's actions, stating, 'The movie has faced a major financial impact and negative publicity due to such false allegations and threats by Ruchi." He also claimed that she attempted to intimidate both actors and service vendors involved in the project despite lacking any formal association with the film. 'Our legal team has filed a ₹10 crore defamation claim against her," Singh confirmed, adding that further legal measures are being reviewed. His legal representatives echoed this, stating that proceedings have already begun and additional actions may follow. So Long Valley, starring Tridha Choudhury, Akanksha Puri, and Man Singh, hit cinemas on July 25. First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
