Akal Takht reaches out to Dhadrianwale, other preachers to counter conversions

Time of India21-04-2025
Amritsar/Jalandhar: Akal Takht acting Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj has invited
Sikh preacher Ranjit Singh Dhadrianwale
and other prominent preachers, whose cases are pending with the Takht. The invitation, explained Giani Gargaj, was aimed at countering religious conversions and to foster cohesion within the Khalsa Panth.
Dhadrianwale is under a religious boycott currently based on a hukamnama (edict) issued by the Akal Takht.
Dhadrianwale, once the most influential Sikh preacher, would attract thousands to his congregations till an attempt was made on his life in May 2016, in which a fellow preacher was killed. It came out that he was attacked by Damdami Taksal followers amid bitter statements between him and the Taksal chief Baba Harnam Singh Dhumma. Later, Taksal and a few others took exception to his interpretation of Gurbani and Sikh history and complained to the Akal Takht, after which a directive was issued against his congregations, and he then confined his preaching to his dera near Patiala. He still attracts thousands to his congregations.
However, there has been a strong feeling in the Sikh circles that unshackling him after reconciliation can help counter conversions by self-styled Christian pastors, which have become a huge concern in the community.
The jathedar emphasised that the Akal Takht's doors remained open to those willing to return with humility and align themselves with the teachings and principles of the Sikh Gurus. "If they wish to work within the mainstream of the Khalsa Panth and preach Sikhi, they are welcome — provided they come with a spirit of humility and surrender," he added.
This development comes at a time when the Sikh leadership is facing mounting pressure to navigate internal rifts and preserve doctrinal integrity amid numerous challenges.
Jagir Kaur's attendance sparks row
Interestingly, former Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Bibi Jagir Kaur has come under scrutiny for attending an event organised by Dhadrianwale at Nadala village on Saturday.
BJP leader Sarchand Singh Khiala, who was formerly associated with the Taksal, has submitted a letter to the jathedar, urging that Jagir Kaur be summoned to answer the charges of violating the Akal Takht hukamnama and called for appropriate action in line with the Panthic tradition.
Key gathering on May 2
Giani Gargaj also announced a special gathering under the patronage of the Akal Takht, scheduled for May 2 to focus on growing concerns around films and animated content depicting Sikh Gurus, their families, historical warriors, and Sikh history at large.
He noted that the Sikh community raises objections frequently to how these sensitive subjects are portrayed, often leading to widespread discontent and emotional distress across the Panth. "The Akal Takht receives constant appeals from the Sangat to take concrete steps on these issues," he said. "Given their sensitive nature, they warrant serious and collective contemplation."
All Sikh organisations, sects (sampradas), institutions, and scholars involved in Sikh affairs have been urged to participate and share their input at the May 2 assembly.

Punjab, top Sikh body spar over events on Guru Tegh Bahadur's martyrdom day

A fresh tussle has erupted in Punjab between the Bhagwant Mann-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)-aligned Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC). This time, the friction centres around their separate plans to commemorate the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur, the 9th Guru of Monday, Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains announced that the state government's upcoming celebration has been scheduled from November 19 to 25, where the government will organise several events, including a major yatra starting from Srinagar, which will be flagged off by Chief Minister Bhagwant yatras from Punjab's Majha, Malwa, and Doaba regions will converge at Anandpur Sahib, the birthplace of Guru Tegh Bahadur, and the city will be turned into a white city to mark the day. However, the SGPC has voiced strong objections after the government announcement, calling the overlapping of events disruptive and disrespectful to Sikh traditions. SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami accused the Mann government of intentionally sidelining Sikh institutions and calling for avoidable controversy with the Panth. 'Instead of following the cooperative spirit shown by earlier governments, this administration is intruding into Panthic affairs,' Dhami said.'SGPC, as the premier religious body of the Sikh community, holds the rightful authority to lead such historic religious commemorations in coordination with Sikh organisations and sangat (devotees). The role of governments should be to facilitate arrangements for the devotees—not to interfere in religious affairs,' Dhami told India response, CM Mann hit back at the SGPC on Tuesday, questioning if the body held a 'copyright' on organising events for Sikh Gurus. Mann also mentioned that during Prakash Singh Badal's government, similar events were hosted together by the SGPC and the SAD-led Punjab is not the first time that the SGPC or any government excluding SAD is in contradiction. The situation mirrors a similar conflict in 2019, when the SGPC clashed with the then Congress-led government over parallel events for Guru Nanak's 550th birth anniversary, due in November, carries political weight ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly polls. For the SAD, struggling with internal divisions and a waning voter base, the commemorations represent a chance to reconnect with the public. Meanwhile, the AAP government seems determined to assert its role in religious and cultural the controversy, preparations are moving ahead at full pace. The state government expects over one crore devotees in Anandpur Sahib and plans to turn the city white for the occasion. A 'tent city' will be erected for visitors, and sound-and-light shows will be held across all 23 districts. Seminars in universities are also on the cards to spread awareness about Guru Tegh Bahadur's legacy. Coordination is underway with Haryana, Delhi, and Jammu & Kashmir to facilitate the SGPC has stated it will invite leaders from all states to its commemorative events, aiming for inclusivity. However, the body's secretary, Balwinder Singh, claimed he was unaware of any official communication with the Mann the two sides choose to reconcile and organise joint events, it could lead to the unlikely scenario of CM Mann sharing the stage with SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal—a politically sensitive prospect, given the SGPC's frequent criticisms of the AAP government.- EndsMust Watch

Modi in UK takes aim at Sikh separatists. ‘Must not be allowed to misuse democratic freedoms'

The Indian Prime Minister added: 'On the matter of extradition of economic offenders as well, our agencies will continue to work together in close coordination and cooperation.' 'We also agree that forces with extremist ideologies must not be allowed to misuse democratic freedoms. Those who misuse democratic freedoms to undermine democracy itself must be held to account,' Modi declared while speaking to the press alongside his British counterpart Keir Starmer. New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi Thursday took aim at Sikh separatists in the UK asserting that 'forces with extremist ideologies' must not be allowed to 'misuse democratic freedoms'. While the Prime Minister's statement did not directly mention them, Sikh separatists have attempted to disrupt Indian diplomatic activity in the UK, even breaking the security cordon during External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar's visit to the Western European country earlier this year. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri during a special briefing prior to Modi's visit to the UK had pointed out that Sikh separatists 'impact social cohesion and social order' in nations where they are allowed to operate. There have been incidents by Sikh extremists against Indian diplomatic missions in the US, the UK and Canada in the last few years. After the incident with Jaishankar in March, India issued a stern warning to the UK, demanding action not words, as the Sikh separatists were able to break through the foreign minister's security cordon. The Ministry of External Affairs summoned British charge d'affaires Christina Scott and handed over a demarche. In March 2023, the Indian flag was detached from the Indian High Commission in London after the building was breached by Sikh separatists protesting against police action aimed at arresting Amritpal Singh in the state of Punjab. He was arrested following a manhunt, and later successfully contested the 2024 general election from Khadoor Sahib. That same year in September, Vikram Doraiswami, India's High Commissioner to the UK was prevented from entering a gurdwara in the Scottish city of Glasgow by Sikh separatists. Doraiswami had been invited to visit the gurdwara by the local community. These incidents have been some of the major irritants in ties between New Delhi and London. India has also raised the issue of the extradition of wanted fugitives who fled the country for the United Kingdom. Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi and Vijay Mallya are some of the well known cases of individuals wanted by Indian authorities, who currently reside in the UK. Nirav Modi is currently lodged in a British prison, while his attempts to appeal his extradition have been rejected by the courts in the UK so far. The Indian Prime Minister is on a two-day visit to the UK from 23 July till 24 July, where he witnessed the signing of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). The CETA is considered to be India's most comprehensive free trade agreement till date, and the most significant trade deal for London since its exit from the European Union (EU). It is India's first bilateral trade agreement with a Western nation. It will see duties removed across 99 percent of tariff lines, representing roughly 100 percent of the total value of trade for Indian exporters. The deal will see the average tariff on Indian exports to the UK fall from 15 percent currently to 3 percent. The UK has gained a number of wins in the trade deal, including seeing the tariffs on its whisky and gin exports to India halved from 150 percent to 75 percent. Within 10 years, the tariffs on such exports to India will fall by a further 35 percent. During the visit the two leaders also agreed to the India-UK Vision 2035 strategy document, which covers defence and security, technology and innovation, climate and clean energy, education, investment and growth. Modi will call on King Charles III before departing the UK for Maldives. In Maldives, the Indian Prime Minister will be the 'guest of honour' at the island nation's sixtieth Independence Day celebrations. ICC convicts pair over Central Africa war crimes

The International Criminal Court Thursday convicted a former top Central African Republic football official and a militiaman nicknamed Rambo for multiple war crimes committed during the country's civil war in 2013 and 2014. ICC convicts pair over Central Africa war crimes Ex-sports minister Patrice-Edouard Ngaissona was a senior leader of mainly Christian militias as the country slid into civil war, while Alfred Yekatom, a former MP, commanded them on the ground. The ICC sentenced Yekatom to 15 years behind bars for 20 war crimes and crimes against humanity including murder and torture. Ngaissona received a sentence of 12 years for 28 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Their militia, known as anti-Balaka or "anti-machete", were formed as vigilante self-defence groups after mainly Muslim rebels called the Seleka stormed the capital Bangui and removed then-president Francois Bozize, a Christian. Presiding judge Bertram Schmitt read harrowing details of the violence committed by the militia against suspected Seleka Muslims. Yekatom's men tortured one suspect by cutting off his fingers, toes, and one ear. This man's body was never found. Others were killed and then mutilated. Appearing in court dressed in a light brown suit and waistcoat, white shirt, and dark tie, Yekatom listened impassively as the judge read out the verdict. Dressed in a bright blue jacket, Ngaissona nodded to the judge as his sentence was delivered. The court found Yekatom not guilty of conscripting child soldiers and acquitted Ngaissona of the charge of rape. Both men had pleaded not guilty to all charges. Yekatom was extradited to The Hague in late 2018, after being arrested in the CAR for firing his gun in parliament. Ngaissona was arrested in France in December 2018 and extradited to The Hague. At the time he was head of the CAR football association and a board member of the Confederation of African Football . The Central African Republic is among the poorest nations in the world and has endured a succession of civil wars and authoritarian governments since independence in 1960. Violence has subsided in recent years but fighting occasionally erupts in remote regions between rebels and the national army, which is backed by Russian mercenaries and Rwandan troops. Set up in 2002, the ICC is the world's only independent tribunal capable of prosecuting those accused of the world's worst crimes. ric/srg/cw This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.
