City of Detroit offering youth programs during the summer in effort to reduce youth violence
But what if your teen isn't an athlete?
The city has a wide variety of programs available to young people at recreation centers across the city. Crowell Recreation Center in the Brightmoor neighborhood is home to the Heritage Camp, started by Mama Shushanna Shakur 21 years ago. The camp is in memory of her son, who lost his life to gun violence
"My son had just been gone a month, and I said, How can I start this program? And I kind of heard my son's voice saying, Mama, you know, the kids need it," Shukar said.
In more than two decades, the camp has served 4,000 youth.
"We learned how to behave, and it was never too strict or anything crazy, but it was just enough to help us, like go on the right path for us growing up," said Madison Young, youth mentor and drama teacher.
Teens act as mentors and instructors to the younger kids.
"I think that if they're distracted and they're around people and they're being disciplined correctly, and they're being positively influenced, I think that it would make a big difference," said youth mentor Lindsey Becton.
There are 13 Recreation Centers in Detroit. All of them offer youth programming.
"So some of our programming for teens will include anywhere from basketball, but we also have different camps going on, like a heritage camp we have at one of our rec centers. We have classes for braiding or nail tech, and boxing," said Crystal Perkins, director of the city's General Services.
For Detroit residents, ages 13-17, the membership fee is $7 for the whole year. For 6-12-year-olds, the fee is $5. Kids under 5 get in for free.
While most programs happen during the day, some rec centers are open later in the evening.
"We have nine of our rec centers are open to 9 p.m., that's the latest that our rec centers stay open," Perkins said.

Hank Aaron's family reacts to memorable tribute at 2025 MLB All-Star Game
The tribute to 'Hammerin' Hank' Aaron's iconic 715th home run at Tuesday night's MLB All-Star Game was one to remember. Channel 2's Karyn Greer spoke to Aaron's granddaughter about what that legendary moment meant to her and her family. 'It's actually incredible. I had, I did not expect that,' Emily Haydel said. She was not even born when her grandfather changed the face of baseball. But Tuesday night's special tribute made her and thousands of others feel like they were there. 'It modernized the moment for people who weren't as aware of it because they weren't alive and or weren't in attendance. It's just a great way to remind people of my granddad, who I know would have loved to be here at the All-Star game here in Atlanta. So it was a very touching moment for sure,' she said. Von Miller Sends First Message to Commanders Fans Following Contract Report
Von Miller Sends First Message to Commanders Fans Following Contract Report originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Von Miller has had a storied career. He's played 13 seasons in the NFL and is regarded as one of the best linebackers of his generation. After spending a decade with the Denver Broncos, Miller moved onto the Los Angeles Rams for one season. And most recently, he played three seasons with the Buffalo Bills. The now 36 year old has won two Super Bowls (2015 and 2021) and is the active sacks leader (129.5), ranking No. 16 in sacks in NFL history. He was also named Super Bowl MVP in 2015. And now, Miller will reportedly play for his fourth team of his career, the Washington Commanders. After being released by the Bills in early March, it was reported on Wednesday that Miller will be signing a one-year deal with the Commanders. Immediately following the news, Miller took to social media, sending his first message to Commanders fans. "DC ...What's good?" Miller posted to his official X account. Miller also posted two images of himself in a Commanders jersey on his official Instagram account. Miller will join a Commanders team that is on the rise and currently possesses a mix of young talent and talented veterans. Commanders quarterback, Jayden Daniels, is getting set to enter his second season in the NFL with high expectations. As for the defense, Miller will join fellow veteran LB, Bobby Wagner. The Commanders also have veteran cornerback, Marshon Lattimore on their roster. Both Wagner and Lattimore will enter their second season with the Commanders. The Commanders finished last season with a 12-5 record, their first season above .500 since 2015. They made it to the NFC Championship before getting eliminated by the eventual Super Bowl champion, Philadelphia Eagles. Miller's contract won't become official until he passes a physical with the team, and time will tell if he'll be ready and available for the Commanders first preseason game in just three weeks on August 8. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 17, 2025, where it first appeared.
