Brian Daboll, Giants' coaching staff disrespected in ESPN ranking
It's no secret that the 2025 NFL season is something of a 'make or break' year for New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll. Once a rising star as the offensive coordinator for Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills, the Giants hired Daboll as head coach and saw some success right away. He guided New York to a 9-7 record, a return to the playoffs, and got quarterback Daniel Jones to look the best he ever has. Since then, it's been all downhill for Daboll and the Giants, winning just nine total games across two seasons while Daniel Jones is now the likely backup quarterback in Indianapolis. As the NFL is a 'what have you done for me lately' league, it should come as no surprise that Daboll and his coaching staff fared poorly in a recent ranking of NFL coaching staffs. Ben Solak, an analyst for ESPN, ranked each team's coaching staff heading into the 2025 NFL season and placed the New York Giants in dead last, a drop of 8 spots from last year. Regarding Daboll and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, Solak writes, 'It's not much to hang a hat on, but if and when we see Jaxson Dart this season at quarterback, I expect the team to have some smart, easy ways to get him into a rhythm and involved in the running game. I can at least see the visions in New York, even if the plane often struggles to get off the ground.' Defensive coordinator Shane Bowen earned a slightly rosier assessment, at least. 'I have a warmer appreciation for Bowen, who is always willing to get creative with alignment and coverages to solve personnel problems on the back end. The 2024 Giants' defense was definitely poor, but they have overhauled the secondary and added to the pass rush this offseason, so I'm happy reserving a stronger judgment for Year 2.' As aforementioned, it should surprise no one that the Giants' coaching staff is ranked among the league's worst. What is rather surprising was seeing them rank at dead last, behind even some first-time head coaches with inexperienced staffs, like the Jacksonville Jaguars. To be fair, the Jaguars only ranked one spot higher than New York, but even that feels like a major disservice to Daboll's potential. At least Daboll has a playoff appearance to his name. Hopefully, the arm of Russell Wilson, who is the unquestioned starting QB in 2025, will guide New York to a strong 2025 season and we'll see a more positive evaluation in next year's rankings.

Terry McLaurin didn't appear unhappy when greeting Commanders' leadership
For the first time in his six seasons (this will be his seventh), Terry McLaurin is at odds with the Washington Commanders. It's unusual because McLaurin is the consummate pro, the good guy, outstanding leader and terrific player. However, that's what happens when money is involved. McLaurin feels as if he should be one of the NFL's highest-paid receivers, likely seeing the deal DK Metcalf signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers, with an average annual value of $33 million. McLaurin sees that deal and, like everyone else, realizes he's been the better player. On the other hand, Washington sees a player who will soon turn 30 (September) and likely views him at around $26 million, similar to the deal that Mike Evans signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Evans is a future Hall of Famer, but is about to enter his 12th NFL season. Who is right? Only time will tell, but both have strong cases. In actuality, no one really knows who is asking for what, yet the two sides remain far apart, with McLaurin requesting a trade on Thursday. On Saturday, McLaurin again came onto the practice field, signing autographs for fans, but he was also seen greeting someone familiar. ESPN's John Keim has a longer video of the meeting, where McLaurin shares a friendly conversation with team president Mark Clouse. These brief encounters may mean nothing, but there didn't appear to be any tension when McLaurin spoke to Harris or Clouse. Also, did you notice the back of McLaurin's shirt? Team. Despite this, there still appears to be no movement on a new deal between the two parties. Kansas City Chiefs STC Dave Toub explains the decision to end the punter competition early
During Saturday's training camp press conference, Kansas City Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub shared his thoughts on sticking with Matt Araiza over Eddie Czaplicki in their punter competition. "He was ahead at the point when I talked about it last week, and then he had even a better day or two days, you know, after that," said Toub, "And then we had some injuries where we had to make a decision, just like I said, decision, just like I said, that might happen, but it forced the decision. Matt (Araiza), he's like, the champion. You've got to knock the champion out, and Eddie (Czaplicki) wasn't able to do that in the period that he was here, but I still think he's an NFL punter. I think he's going to get another chance somewhere else." Czaplicki had a net average of 45.7 yards per punt and 24 punts inside the 20 with a long of 62 while at USC. In addition to his Ray Guy Award, he was named first-team All-Big Ten Conference, the Big Ten Eddleman-Fields Punter of the Year, and first-team All-American. "I wish I could have gotten some games just to see how he (Czaplicki) did there, but somebody else would give him a shot, and I'm sure he's going to make it somewhere. It helped Matt a lot. Competition always helps everybody, you know, somebody who has that high caliber of talent to help them in the pooch area. I think it helped develop them there. Also helped Matt develop a left punt, which he needed to do. Matt, he's in a good place right now, as you know, as long as he keeps the foot on the gas pedal right now, which he will." In his first season with the Chiefs, Araiza punted 62 times for 3027 yards during his 17 appearances in the 2024 regular season and landed 25 punts inside the 20-yard line.
