Opella launches as an independent company to redefine the future of self-care

Tahya Masr06-05-2025
It is official: Opella is now a standalone company. Sanofi announced today the closing of the sale to CD&R of a 50.0% controlling stake of Opella, Sanofi keeping a significant shareholding with a 48.2% stake and Bpifrance owning a 1.8% stake. Opella is stepping into its next chapter with powerful backing, and a clear mission - 'Health in Your Hands' - making self-care as simple as it should be.
This is not just a change of ownership. This is a bold move. As the third-largest global player in the €190 billion Over-The-Counter and Vitamins, Minerals and Supplements space, Opella starts a new journey in one of the most dynamic, resilient corners of healthcare – where megatrends like aging populations, digital access, and self-care demand are rewriting the rulebook.
Opella is headquartered in France but thinks global. Its 100 brands – including Telfast, Doliprane, Bronchicum, Enterogermina, Maalox, Nasacort, Maxilase, Bisolvon and Buscopan – are already trusted names in homes around the world. The self-care environment is still far too complex, leaving most people who suffer without treatment. Opella is grounded in science, with deep consumer obsession and a commitment to sustainability, to offer solutions that help people access the care they deserve.
Julie Van Ongevalle, Opella President and CEO:
'Going independent is not just a milestone. It is our moment. I am proud of our talented team of 11,000 who made this happen. With the right partners and a sharp focus, we are set to reshape how people everywhere manage their health – simply, confidently, and on their terms.'
Feirouz Ellouze, General Manager of Opella AMET Zone (Africa-Middle East-Türkiye)
'At Opella, our mission is to simplify self-care, making it as simple as it should be. We work together with all our stakeholders to enhance health literacy and extend our vision of 'health in your hands'. This new chapter at Opella is dedicated to advancing our journey towards becoming fast-moving consumer healthcare company globally. We firmly believe in our people and their ability to create a lasting legacy in the countries where we operate.'
David Taylor takes on the role of Chairman of Opella's Supervisory Board. Former Chairman and CEO of Procter & Gamble, and current Chairman of the Board of Delta and Senior Advisor to CD&R funds, David brings decades of brand experience, people-first leadership, and a deep belief in doing things better.
David Taylor, Chairman of Opella's Supervisory Board:
'What drew me to Opella is a mission with meaning, a company with courage, a talented team, and a business ready to break new ground. Opella is not here to tweak the system – but to reimagine it.'
The priority is clear: strengthen trusted brands and deepen presence in key markets. The possibilities are endless – from prescription to over-the-counter switches to smart acquisitions and geographic expansion.
This is more than independence. It is the freedom to act. The power to simplify. And the drive to redefine the future of self-care.

Opella becomes first global consumer healthcare firm to gain B Corp status

Opella has become the first global consumer healthcare company to achieve B Corp Certification after meeting the social and environmental standards set by B Lab, the non-profit organisation behind the accreditation. The certification covers Opella's global operations and follows a four-year transformation process, during which the company said it redefined its approach to sustainability, innovation and governance. The company demonstrated strong performance in areas including climate action, product sustainability, community health and leadership accountability. 'Being B Corp certified globally is a first step on our sustainability journey,' Julie Van Ongevalle, Opella President and CEO, said in a statement. 'We owe it to the incredible work done by our 11,000 employees across the globe, our customers and our consumers. It is a commitment to redefine self-care by proving that business success and sustainability can and must go hand in hand.' The company cited several achievements on its path to certification, including a 64% reduction in its Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions since 2019 and sourcing over 93% of its electricity from renewable sources. As of 2024, 97% of Opella's paper-based packaging comes from certified or recycled materials. Opella also reported that its partnerships with local non-governmental organisations on community programmes have directly benefited over one million people since 2022. In 2024 alone, its educational campaigns on health awareness and responsible medicine use reached over 129 million individuals. 'This recognition reflects the ambition that drives us forward,' said Marissa Saretsky, Chief Sustainability Officer. 'Going through the certifying process has been an amazing catalyst to drive our sustainability transformation, spur innovation, and engage our employees. It sets a global benchmark, and we are committed to leading from the front by turning high standards into everyday action. This is just the beginning.' Feirouz Ellouze, General Manager for Opella in Africa, the Middle East and Turkiye, added that the certification marks the beginning of a deeper commitment. 'B Corp certification marks the beginning of our journey to deepen our commitment to environmental stewardship,' Ellouze said. 'At Opella, we believe that our mission to bring health into the hands of our consumers is inseparable from our responsibility to care for the planet. Sustainability isn't a side initiative—it's a core part of who we are and what we do. We can't deliver health without honoring the planet—because true well-being begins with a thriving world.'

Opella Egypt leads with purpose at Africa Health ExCon

Opella Egypt participated as a Gold Sponsor at Africa Health ExCon 2025, co-hosted by Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), Africa's leading healthcare event. The conference welcomed over 60,000 attendees from 150+ countries, held under the patronage of President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi. 'Towards Sustainable Healthcare' session, held by Opella on June 25, focused on Opella's sustainability, B Corp certification and self-care vision. At the heart of the session was a panel on e-Labelling, a joint ambition by Opella and the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA) to cut waste and expand access to reliable health information. The takeaway was simple: Digital, eco-friendly tools aren't optional. They're essential for a smarter, more sustainable future. Opella leaders, experts from the World Health Organization (WHO), the EDA, South Africa's regulatory bodies, and the Global Self-Care Federation (GSCF) contributed valuable insights. The message was clear: Long-term impact starts with informed choices, stronger health literacy, and is bolstered by collaboration. Opella achieved a new milestone on its journey to deliver responsible self-care for people and planet. Certified by B Lab, B Corp recognizes companies that meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability. Marissa Saretsky, Chief Sustainability Officer: 'We are proud to be the first global consumer healthcare company to achieve B Corp Certification, reflecting our commitment to sustainability and accountability. Our strategy towards a healthier planet and society focuses on decarbonizing our operations and value chain, embedding circularity, driving health literacy and supporting surrounding communities through NGO partnerships. We look forward to working with all partners across the sector to make sustainable self-care second nature.' Josephine Fubara, Chief Science Officer: 'e-Labeling puts more power in the hands of consumers. It empowers consumers by making self-care easier, more accessible, and sustainable—while simplifying healthcare for everyone. To realize its full potential, we need early, open collaboration across regulators, industry, healthcare professionals, and patients.' Feirouz Ellouze, General Manager (AMET): 'Opella's presence at the conference highlights our commitment to sustainable healthcare systems. We are a dedicated global self-care leader, ready to meet the health needs of consumers. Our independence allows us to innovate faster and stay focused on our mission: making self-care as simple as it should be – for everyone.' The EDA has been leading a multi-phase e-Labelling shift to modernize medicine information and boost sustainability. Launched in 2022, The initiative, launched in 2022, replaces paper leaflets with QR-linked digital formats, starting with hospital-use products. Now in its second phase, it supports health literacy, cuts paper waste, and sets the stage for full digital integration using global standards. By digitizing the 60 million leaflets provided annually by Opella Egypt alone, we could save 300 tonnes of carbon emissions and protect 5,400 trees. Recognizing the significance of collaboration and active participation among various stakeholders, Opella is committed to supporting initiatives that facilitate this transition and drive sustainable change.

Opella Egypt Expands Youth Development Efforts with Second Cohort of UpGrads Internship Program.

Opella Egypt is scaling up its commitment to youth empowerment, geared towards enhancing the local healthcare ecosystem with the return of its flagship internship initiative, UpGrads. Now in its second year, the structured, hybrid internship program is set to welcome around 100 students from across Egypt this summer, nearly doubling its inaugural cohort of 60 participants. At its core, UpGrads is designed to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world experience. Over a six-week period starting on July 15, pharmacy students will engage in a well-defined learning journey that combines virtual classrooms, on-the-ground field training, and mentorship from industry professionals. Participants will explore diverse functions within Opella – focusing on sales operations – building practical skills while stepping into the real pace of the fast-moving consumer healthcare (FMCH) industry. As part of the program, students will be immersed in weekly virtual skill-building workshops, complemented by in-field rotations where they act as pharmacists, merchandisers, medical representatives, and marketeers. The program concludes with a formal certification, equipping participants to take confident steps into their future careers. 'At Opella, we believe growth starts with bold opportunity. UpGrads is more than an internship – it's a purpose-driven launchpad for the next generation of healthcare leaders. We're proud to extend this journey to more students this year, with a best-in-class curriculum rooted in learning, responsibility, and real-world impact.' Applications for participation in the program will continue until June 25. To apply, all candidates need to send their CV that includes name, address, phone number, year of study and e-mail address to [email protected] Strategic partnerships for a stronger healthcare future Opella's youth empowerment vision goes hand-in-hand with its commitment to building stronger, more collaborative healthcare ecosystems. UpGrads, which was launched last year and is now in its second year running, will begin again in July 2025. It sits alongside UpGrads Pro, a complementary program developed in partnership with the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA). Through UpGrads Pro, the company continues to help pharmacy students in their final year with on-the-job exposure in sales and marketing, cross-functional placements, and guided mentorship, aligned with the national framework for the mandatory training year for pharmacy graduates (Ministerial Decision No. 967 of 2023). Since its inception, UpGrads Pro has supported 77 pharmacy students across various Egyptian universities as they complete their mandatory training year. Through the program, Opella ensures these students graduate with more than -just a degree – they leave with clarity, confidence, and career readiness. Together, these initiatives reflect Opella's ongoing commitment to youth capability building, workforce sustainability, and the broader mission of putting Health in Your Hands. In Egypt, Opella is rapidly shaping a new chapter in self-care with the vision of making it as simple as should be. Backed by a global mission and local ambition, our trusted brands, including Telfast, Doliprane, Bronchicum, Enterogermina, Maalox, Nasacort, Maxilase, Bisolvon and Buscopan, serve millions of consumers each year. Nationwide, Opella is investing in youth development, healthcare access, and digital engagement to meet real needs in real lives.
