
'Our little girl died four years ago and we're still waiting to find out why'
The devastated parents of a little girl who died after collapsing in hospital say they feel 'let down again and again" as a long-awaited inquest into her death is delayed yet again, nearly four years on.
Bonnie Marsh, just four years old, tragically died in December 2021 after falling seriously ill with vomiting and exhaustion. Despite three visits to hospital, where her mum says she was 'dying in her arms', the bubbly schoolgirl was not admitted until it was too late Now, her grieving parents Lauren and Liam Marsh are still fighting for answers, but the inquest they had hoped would finally give them closure has been pushed back once more.
And the heartbroken couple have revealed a string of horrifying discoveries in the wake of their daughter's death — including learning her body had been frozen without their consent.
Mum Lauren, 33, said: "She's my daughter, but it feels like she's been the NHS 's property since she died. We were finally at the point of getting answers, and it's been taken away from us. We've just been let down again.'
Bonnie, who had just started school and adored Disney's The Lion King, seemed full of a cold on December 14 four years ago when she came home from school. Two days later, she passed out in the bathroom after being sick.
Paramedics told her family her observations were 'fine' and said the hospital wasn't necessary. But her concerned mum insisted on taking her in anyway, explaining: "She was still being sick, floppy and lethargic."
Bonnie was seen again at Norfolk and Norwich Hospital the following day but sent home. On December 18, Lauren knew something was seriously wrong. She added: "She was freezing cold, floppy and dying in my arms. I was wandering around the hospital begging someone to help.'
A cleaner, not a nurse or doctor, eventually guided her to the Children's Assessment Unit and said the tot was "very poorly," Lauren explained. As Bonnie's condition worsened, doctors handed Lauren a syringe and told her to feed her daughter tiny drops of water, despite her being close to death.
Lauren said: 'They gave me the syringe to put water in my dying daughter's mouth. They said they'd restarted her heart and were transferring her by helicopter. But before we could leave, doctors ran back into the room. They said it was time to say goodbye — but when I walked in, she was already gone.'
Ever since the tragic death, Lauren says her family haven't received any support or guidance and that police weren't contacted about the sudden death.
Initially, the cause of death was said to be dehydration due to norovirus. A post-mortem later showed Bonnie had also tested positive for Covid and flu. But then doctors at N&N said she may have died due to a genetic condition, and an interim death certificate listed an 'inborn error of metabolism'.
However, specialists at Addenbrooke's, Great Ormond Street, and even a clinic in Germany all found no evidence of any such condition. To make matters worse, the family were told after her death that Bonnie's body had been frozen to preserve samples.
Lauren added: 'I hadn't signed anything. I had no idea. I was heartbroken. When I finally saw her, she didn't look like my Bonnie anymore.'
Bonnie's inquest was finally scheduled to begin this July, but just three days before it was due to start, the family were told it was being postponed again because a witness was unavailable. At a brief hearing, area coroner Johanna Thompson said: "Bonnie's inquest was due to take place this week, but there were difficulties with the attending witness… It has now been relisted for October 29 and 30.'
However, the family aren't hopeful anything will get done this time and are refusing to put it in their calendar. Lauren explained: "Every delay sets us back three months. Every time, someone needs more time to review evidence. I don't think we're going to get an apology. I just want a concrete answer about what my daughter died from.'
In a statement, Tracey Bleakley, Executive Managing Director at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, said: "Our deepest condolences are with Bonnie's family following their loss and we are sorry to hear there have been delays in the inquest process. It is entirely right that the circumstances are fully reviewed by the coroner following our own internal review. A full inquest… will provide the opportunity to answer all the family's questions.'

Speaking from her home in Watford, Hertfordshire, Kirstie said her daughter Harriet has been tested for the disease - and this recently came back as positive. Kirstie added: "[Lyme disease] is a devastating diagnosis and our hearts really do go out to him. I'm sure Justin is realising now that it affects everything - it's your nervous system, your joints and chronic fatigue. The chronic fatigue especially is something you can't even fathom until you're in it." It comes after the NHS warned a mouth symptom could be a sign of a life-shortening disease. Kirstie enjoyed a career as a pageant queen but she can no longer work due to the crippling nature of the condition. Lyme disease is known to cause high temperature, fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, tiredness and loss of energy. Harriet, 13, struggles with "seizure-like" blackouts and extreme fatigue, having been diagnosed with Lyme disease around one year after her mother. However, Kirstie recognised symptoms as early as 2015, signs she now knows were those of the infection. It took her years to get a diagnosis, after first being told she had rheumatoid arthritis. "Justin's gone very viral within one of my Lyme disease support groups - I'm sure a lot of people within the group will be reaching out to him with words of support," Kirstie continued. "It's hellish, to be honest. Once you've got Lyme disease chronically, you have to live with it for the rest of your life - it doesn't go away. My daughter has it now - two months ago, further tests showed it's caused deficiencies in iron and folic acid." After the mum's hands became "disfigured" - leaving her with painful swollen joints and unable to pick things up - she pressed for another diagnosis and, upon researching Lyme disease, flew to Mexico for blood tests specifically for the infection. These came back positive so she was eventually diagnosed in February 2023. Online reports say "Lyme disease cannot be inherited". MedlinePlus, part of the National Library of Medicine, says "the risk of certain complications of the condition may be influenced by inherited genetic factors, but the inheritance pattern is unknown". But Harriet experiences blackouts, almost like seizures, and migraines frequently, including at school. Kirstie has offered advice to Justin Timberlake, after he announced his diagnosis. However, she also said: "It's devastating for him, and we're heartbroken. There's no positive spin - it's a terrible thing to live with."

The children that are still with us face excruciating pain as their body eats itself – converts the body's tissue into energy – to stay alive. The situation has deteriorated to the point where the UN believes one in five children is malnourished – an average of 112 children a day, since the beginning of 2025, according to Unicef. READ MORE: Gaza detainees 'tortured and raped' by Israeli forces, United Nations hears They also found that 18% of the 5000 children admitted into hospital for malnutrition had Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM), the most life-threatening form. For many now, the only solution is enteral nutrition, also known as tube feeding, using a pale brown viscous liquid packed with life-saving nutrients. This can be done through the nose (nasoenteral) or via an open wound in the stomach (gastrostomy). The former feels like an endless stream of phlegm dangling down the throat, while the latter feels like your gastric juice will pour out at any moment. I should know, for this was my experience of having them growing up; I was malnourished for 14 years due to several childhood health issues. Due to aid shortage, many children whose lives depend on this are going without; this can have a severe impact on their development. This is even more true for the first 1000 days – from pregnancy to two years old – which is fundamental for the growth and development of the brain. Without the right nutrients, the immune system becomes weakened, increasing susceptibility to an illness. I contracted septicaemia, a blood poisoning bacterium, from my gastronomy, which could have turned into sepsis if it wasn't for the clean, sterile hospital and NHS resources. This is not the case in Gaza – out of the 36 hospitals, only 17 are operational, but with partial functionality amid the bombardment by Israel. (Image: AP) Those that remain are overcrowded and unsterilised with no access to clean water or medical supplies; many of these children have severe open wounds! The mass starvation has left them even more exposed to life-threatening infections. If they survive the hunger and disease, they will probably suffer with physical and psychological conditions. Their growth will be stunted, affecting the development of the bones, muscles and brain; this increases their chances of developing serious mental health and/or learning disabilities. Even though I am far healthier than in my childhood thanks to the care of the NHS, I still suffer minor health problems, including sciatica and IBS. But my experience of malnourishment pales in comparison to that of the starving children in Gaza, who will live with debilitating deformities, likely needing 24-hour care. Some might never make it to adulthood. Their future will be of lifelong pain and suffering, and the longer this continues, the more devastating the situation will become.

Almost half of NHS England waiting list patients yet to have initial appointment
Around three million people in England have had no further health care since being referred to a hospital waiting list, new data suggests. NHS England figures last month estimated 7.36 million treatments were waiting to be carried out at the end of May, relating to just under 6.23 million patients – with the analysis from MBI Health suggesting almost half of those have been left in limbo. Referring to the issue as a 'frontlog' that contributes to increasing NHS waiting list times, MBI said the problem 'has gone unchallenged for too long', with an estimated 2.99 million people waiting for their first clinical contact. MBI's analysis found that around 70% of referral to treatment pathways fall into the category of being 'unseen' since the patient's GP referred them to a specialist. Delays in making a first assessment can lead to late diagnosis, worsening symptoms and pressure on emergency services. The analysis found that ear, nose and throat (ENT), trauma and orthopaedics, gastroenterology, ophthalmology and gynaecology and obstetrics departments were consistently the specialist departments with the greatest number of patients not seen for the first time. As part of the Government's 10-year health plan, the NHS is expected to meet its target of carrying out 92% per cent of routine operations and appointments within 18 weeks by March 2029 – a target that has not been achieved for almost a decade. The latest figures show how challenging that target will be given an estimated one million of the three million unseen patients have already gone more than 18 weeks without receiving any care. 'If accurate, three million people are trapped in an invisible waiting list crisis, stuck without basic diagnostic tests of first appointments while their conditions worsen,' Rachel Power, the chief executive of the Patients Association, told the Guardian. 'The scale is staggering, as nearly half of all patients on a waiting list haven't been seen by anyone. That's not a healthcare service; that's a breakdown. 'These aren't just statistics. They're people checking their phones daily for hospital calls that never come, unable to plan their lives while their symptoms deteriorate.' Last month it was found people of working age are making up a growing proportion of those on the NHS waiting list for treatment in England. Data tables published for the first time by NHS England also show people in the most deprived parts of the country are more likely to wait more than a year to start hospital treatment than those in the least deprived. The figures, analysed by the PA news agency, showed 56.1% of those on the list at the end of June this year were of working age (defined as age 19 to 64), up from 55.8% a year ago and 55.0% in June 2022. At the same time, the proportion of people on the waiting list under the age of 19 has fallen, standing at 10.8% in June this year, down from 11.2% a year earlier and 11.9% in June 2022. The proportion who are over 65 has remained broadly unchanged at around 33.1%. People of working age are also more likely to have to wait more than a year to start treatment (3.0% of patients in this age group at the end of June) than those over 65 (2.5%). However, the proportion is the same as those under 19 (also 3.0%).
