China Fund Beats 97% of Peers by Buying Pop Mart, Dumping Moutai

Minta day ago

A 30-year old Chinese fund manager is trouncing peers this year with a portfolio stocked with Gen Z-favored names like Pop Mart International Group, betting that new-age shopping trends can help his fund overcome the country's economic sluggishness.
Xie Tianyuan's Penghua Selected Return Flexible Allocation Mixed Fund has returned 24% this year, ranking in the top 3% among roughly 2,300 peers, data from fund tracker East Money Information Co. show. That's a turnaround from its recent past when holdings in traditional sectors like alcoholic beverages and farming dragged performance. A gauge for Chinese stocks listed in Hong Kong has risen 20% this year.
The Shenzhen-based fund manager, who took over early 2024, wasted little time in replacing what was then the fund's top holding Kweichow Moutai Co., a baijiu distiller, with the maker of smash-hit Labubu dolls, Pop Mart.
His repositioning for the fund, which has about $7 million in assets under management, reflects how cultural shifts — brought on by digital influence and youth spending — are creating opportunities for Chinese investors navigating broader challenges in the world's second-largest economy.
His conviction strengthened after witnessing the popularity of the toy maker's products in Thailand, which, he says, signaled 'non-linear growth with every metric showing breakout potential.'
Growing up immersed in Japanese anime culture — his desk is adorned with Dragon Ball Z figurines — Xie said he developed an eye for identifying promising characters or designs, called 'IP brands,' by mixing personal fandom and online research. That he himself is demographically a member of Generation Z, the driving force behind China's new 'emotional spending' consumption trend, helps him understand what may resonate beyond advertising and go viral.
'Opportunities in the sector in the years to come will be on the single stock level as the population dividend comes to an end,' he said. 'I pick companies that have breakthrough products, new business models and innovative sales channels — products that are both visually appealing and fun.'
His top pick, Pop Mart, accounted for 10.5% of the fund's total assets as of March, the top end of its maximum ownership in a single stock allowed, filings show. Other big bets include Mao Geping Cosmetics Co., up 83% this year, as well as Chongqing Baiya Sanitary Products Co., and Yantai China Pet Foods Co.
Xie's strategy lies firmly in targeting the Gen Z consumption trend, where purchase decisions are driven by emotional triggers and hobby interest. Despite looming threats from Donald Trump's proposed tariff hikes, this behavioral change fueled rallies in pockets of China's stock market, especially after the momentum from artificial intelligence began to fade.
Shares of the companies at the heart of this trend — including Pop Mart and Laopu Gold Co., known for distinctive gold pendants — have staged wild gains this year. Laopu is up more than 2,000% since its initial public offering in Hong Kong a year ago.

The rally has expanded to include sectors like medical aesthetics, pet foods and even vape products. Another potential area for Xie: tapping into the rising popularity of sparkling yellow wine.
'The line between what is considered 'old' and 'new' consumption is blurring and more companies will join the new consumption pool once they realize that there's no future for them eking out a survival in their comfort zones,' Xie said. 'Even old trees can sprout new shoots.'
Still, the consumption-driven rally is showing cracks. Pop Mart tumbled after a People's Daily commentary on June 20 that called for stricter regulation of 'blind-box' toys — products in sealed packaging designed to conceal content and induce surprise and greater desire to collect them. Laopu faces greater selling pressure after the lock-up period from its IPO expired Friday.
Meanwhile, many Gen Z stocks are near or above their average price targets, and in turn, driving analysts to constantly find reasons to bump up their outlook.
Xie acknowledged that valuations in the sector may be getting ahead of fundamentals, with some stocks already pricing in earnings three to five years ahead.
Still, he remains overall bullish, particularly on the stocks he's heavily invested in.
'The gains may look incomprehensible to some people, but it's actually all rooted in earnings,' he says. 'Growth for some is underestimated, while others are just in the early stages of their life cycle.'

Academy Empower your mind, elevate your skills ETtech Indian venture investors are setting up shop in San Francisco, the AI epicenter, as they chase cutting edge development of the technology and aim to spot the next wave of AI Indian venture capital companies, such as Elevation Capital and Peak XV , have set up shop at AI epicenter, San Francisco, in the US to tap into the booming addition to this, investors are spending more time in San Francisco or SF as it is called, as the pace of AI development grows unabated in the Capital recently hired Capillary Technologies cofounder and former Meta executive Krishna Mehra, as the AI partner, with more people from the team spending significant time in the US. Peak XV has set up an office in SF, and has hired Arnav Sahu, former Y Combinator principal, to drive investments. Blume Ventures ' managing partner Sanjay Nath is spending time in San Francisco and has also learnt that VC firm Z47 is looking to expand its presence in San Francisco, in the US. The email sent to the company did not elicit any response till the time of Mehra, AI Partner, Elevation Capital, who is based in Palo Alto, quipped that it is now easier to meet a VC in the Valley than in Bengaluru. 'I end up meeting more people from the investment community there,' he are a few things driving explained that this is a combination of more action happening in the US and the need to be closer to understand what is happening in the region and where the buck is going. 'There is a lot of cross border action happening as well, which being there helps to a certain extent,' he Bengaluru-based investors ET spoke to said that they are travelling to the US more often to understand how the technology is evolving. 'Travelling there iseye-opening in terms of what is happening in AI and the kind of talent density that is available there,' one of the investors Krishna, founder, Inkle, a US accounting and tax automation startup, said this is happening globally as well. For instance, he highlighted that a global accelerator, which had originally encouraged founders to start the company wherever they were, is now encouraged to move to the US.'Their original pitch was that build wherever you are, talent is everywhere and sit anywhere in the world. This was 10 years ago,' Krishna said.'This is because the early-stage AI startup has centralised itself to San Francisco city, which has become centre of gravity for startups and foundational model companies. This has eroded Silicon Valley's relative historical dominance over SF, as thousands moved to or launched in the city,' he includes OpenAI and Y Combinator companies that are in SF that have created a concentration of talent in the region resulting in a vibrant AI ecosystem , attracting investors, startups and techies. 'Now you will see entrepreneurs and investors all over the world making pilgrimages to SF every six to 12 months,' Inkle's Krishna investors have been investing aggressively in the AI space in recent times. With a lot of startups in the AI space moving to the US, it is also becoming important for investors to help them with the had earlier reported that a number of AI startups such as and Composio have moved to SF to tap into this this year, Sarvam AI, which is building an Indic foundational model, launched Sarvam Labs in the Bay Area in the US in March in LightSpeed office in Menlo Park, Andra, managing director, Endiya Partners, who has been spending 3-4 months a year in the US, said, 'They (portfolio startups) need connections and networks. So, helping them becomes very important,' he said. But he does not see himself spending more than that in the Capital's Mehra said that in the last two years they have invested in 15-20 companies, compared to the norm of five or six before, primarily driven by AI. 'There is a lot of potential to build category leading companies, some of them in India. But some of them are easier to do in the US. That is why founders are moving early, and the pool is much larger. This might change in five years,' he said.

Japan factory activity grows for first time in 13 months, PMI shows

TOKYO, - Japan's manufacturing sector expanded in June for the first time in 13 months led by an upswing in output, but overall demand remained weak as new orders shrank yet again amid uncertainty over U.S. tariffs, a private sector survey showed on Tuesday. Japan factory activity grows for first time in 13 months, PMI shows The final au Jibun Bank Japan Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index rose to 50.1 in June from 49.4 in May. That undershot the flash figure of 50.4, but managed to nudge above the 50.0 threshold that separates growth from contraction for the first time since May 2024. Among sub-indexes, factory output grew in June to end a nine-month contraction streak, with some respondents citing hopes of improvements in future demand. Others said the production uptick also reflected a need to reduce backlogs of work, according to the survey. The sub-index gauging manufacturers' future output expectations rose to a five-month high, while employment expanded in June for the seventh consecutive month. "The latest PMI data signalled that demand conditions remained challenging for Japanese manufacturers in June, with firms recording further drops in sales both at home and overseas," said Annabel Fiddes, economics associate director at S&P Global Market Intelligence, which compiled the survey. "However, companies were more hopeful when looking ahead, which encouraged them to increase their staff numbers and raise production levels for the first time in a year." Fiddes said Japan will need to see sustained improvement in customer demand, which is being dampened by uncertainty over U.S. tariffs, for a more durable recovery in production. The uncertainty drove new orders down for the 25th consecutive month and at a faster pace compared with May. New export orders also extended their slump since February 2022. Some firms mentioned that the murky outlook for U.S. tariffs was hampering sales, particularly in the semiconductor and automotive sectors, the survey showed. The Japanese government is scrambling to obtain exemptions from the United States for the 25% car tariffs to protect the domestic auto industry, which is a backbone of Japan's export-reliant manufacturing sector and the broader economy. On inflation, the sub-indexes for input and output prices both rose from May, with firms citing higher costs for raw materials, labour and energy, according to the survey. GMC rolls back property tax hike

Ghaziabad: Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation (GMC) board on Monday repealed its earlier decision to hike property tax in the city. The new tax structure came into effect on April 1 this year, but there has been growing opposition to it from RWAs and trader associations, forcing councillors of each ward to request the board to reconsider its decision. Mayor Sunita Dayal called a special board meeting to discuss the issue, and after a heated debate in the house, the board repealed the decision. The board meeting was attended by Ghaziabad MP Atul Garg, MLAs Sunil Sharma from the Sahibabad assembly constituency, Sanjeev Sharma from the city and Ajitpal Tyagi from the Muradnagar constituency. Dayal said, "The hiked property tax stands repealed. GMC will not send notices to residents on the hiked tax slab. In the meantime, we have outsourced 100 employees who will carry out an inspection to redress anomalies on the complaint of residents over erroneous tax notices." Tyagi said, "As per municipal rules, GMC can hike property tax once every two years. In FY 2023-24, the tax was increased by 10% and for this financial year, it has been increased again, which is about three to four times higher. It was a violation of rules, so I filed a case. Now, when the GMC board has repealed its decision, on the next date of hearing, which is on July 29, GMC will furnish a reply in which the board's decision will be stated. " "The court might consider dropping the hiked property tax point, but there are three more points on which the court will still hear the matter. In my plea, I also sought the court's intervention over GMC's decision to levy a uniform tax slab on all types of properties. As per municipal rules, a municipal corporation will give a rebate of 25% of the Annual Rental Value (ARV) on residential buildings that are 10 years old, 32.40% of ARV on buildings that are between 10-20 years, and 40% of ARV on buildings over 20 years old," Tyagi added. The property tax rates before April 1 were between Rs 0.32/sq foot on properties with less than 12m of road width, Rs 0.48 to Rs 2 for roads 12–24 metres wide and Rs 0.65 to Rs 2.4 for wider roads. The revised rate is between Rs 0.75/sq foot to Rs 4/sq foot. In March this year, the board passed the proposal to link tax with the DM circle rate. GMC calculates tax based on the annual rental value (ARV) of a property.
