India's retail inflation in May 2025 declines to a 6-year low of 2.82%; food inflation falls to 0.99%, attributed to lower prices of pulses, vegetables, fruits, and cereals.
CPI Inflation In May 2025: India's retail inflation, based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI), in May 2025 declined to 2.82%, which is the lowest YoY inflation after February 2019, according to the latest official data released on Thursday.
The CPI inflation had stood at 3.16% in the previous month of April 2025 and 4.75% in May 2024.
'Year-on-year inflation rate based on All India Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the month of May, 2025 over May, 2024 is 2.82% (Provisional). There is decline of 34 basis points in headline inflation of May, 2025 in comparison to April, 2025. It is the lowest year-on-year inflation after February 2019," the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation said in a statement on June 12.
Food inflation was at 0.99 per cent in May, significantly down from 8.69 per cent in the year-ago month, according to data of the National Statistics Office (NSO).
'The significant decline in headline inflation and food inflation during the month of May 2025 is mainly attributed to a decline in inflation of pulses & products, vegetables, fruits, cereals & products, households goods & services, sugar & confectionary and egg and the favourable base effect," NSO said in a statement.
The food inflation in May 2025 is the lowest since October 2021.
Last week, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) revised its retail inflation projection for FY26 to 3.7%, down from its earlier estimate of 4%. This marks the lowest average retail inflation forecast by the central bank in recent years.
The downward revision came alongside a surprise 50 basis points repo rate cut, bringing the key policy rate down to 5.5%, and a 100-bps CRR reduction as the RBI signalled confidence in the easing of price pressures amid a supportive global and domestic backdrop.
However, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra said, 'While food inflation outlook remains soft, core inflation is expected to remain benign with easing of international commodity prices in line with the anticipated global growth slowdown. The inflation outlook for the year is being revised downwards from the earlier forecast of 4.0 per cent to 3.7 per cent."

RBI notifies underwriting auction for Rs 32,000 crore Government Securities

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], July 4 (ANI): The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced an underwriting auction for the sale of government securities worth Rs 32,000 crore on Friday. The auction will cover both issue of new government security and the re-issue of an existing one. 'The underwriting auction will be conducted through multiple price-based method on July 04, 2025 (Friday). PDs may submit their bids for ACU auction electronically through Core Banking Solution (E-Kuber) System,' the RBI said. The securities include a new Government Security (GS) maturing in 2040 and a re-issue of the 6.90 per cent GS maturing in 2065, each carrying a notified amount of Rs 16,000 crore. These bonds will be sold through a competitive bidding process involving Primary Dealers (PDs). In simple terms, an underwriting auction is conducted by the RBI to ensure that the full amount of government bonds being issued is subscribed, even if market demand is uncertain. Primary Dealers act as underwriters in this process, they commit to purchasing any unsold portion of the bonds. This mechanism helps the government raise funds smoothly for its expenditure needs. As per the RBI's underwriting commitment scheme, each PD has a Minimum Underwriting Commitment (MUC) of Rs 381 crore for each of the two securities. They are also required to place bids for at least Rs 381 crore under the Additional Competitive Underwriting (ACU) auction. The auction will follow a multiple price-based method and will be held through the RBI's E-Kuber system. The underwriting commission, or fee paid to PDs for their commitment, will be credited to their accounts on the day the securities are issued. This auction is part of the government's regular borrowing program and highlights the RBI's role in facilitating smooth debt market operations. (ANI)

India's fintech sector ranks 3rd globally in H1 2025 funding round: Tracxn

India's financial technology sector has ranked third in startup funding in the first half of 2025, even as overall capital inflows moderated. According to Tracxn's Geo Semi-Annual India FinTech Report H1 2025, Indian FinTech startups raised $889 million between January and June, behind only the United States and the United Kingdom. At $889 million, the funding figure marks a 26 per cent decline from the $1.2 billion secured in the second half of 2024 and a 5 per cent dip compared to the same period last year. However, early-stage funding climbed 10 per cent from H2 2024 to reach $361 million and a 9 per cent increase compared to H1 last year. In contrast, seed-stage investments slumped to $91.2 million, down 27 per cent from the previous half-year period. 'While the Indian FinTech sector has seen a temporary dip in funding, the steady momentum in early-stage investments and growing acquisition activity indicate that investor interest remains strong, particularly in scalable, innovation-led models,' said Tracxn Co-founder Neha Singh. M&A activity grows, fintech adds one new unicorn India's fintech sector also witnessed more mergers and acquisitions (M&A) activity in the first half of the calendar year. The report recorded 16 M&A deals in H1 2025, up 45 per cent from the same period a year ago. Key transactions included Groww's $150 million acquisition of Fisdom and InCred Money's $35 million deal to buy Stocko. Despite the activity, no Fintech IPOs were recorded in H1 2025; however, one new unicorn did emerge during this period. One unicorn had emerged in H2 2024, while none had emerged in H1 2024. Bengaluru leads funding, Accel secures most deals Bengaluru remained the hub of FinTech innovation, drawing 55 per cent of the country's total funding, followed by Mumbai with 14 per cent. Peak XV, Angel List, and LetsVenture were among the most active investors overall. In early-stage rounds, Accel, Bessemer Venture Partners, and Peak XV led activity, while Blume Ventures, Venture Catalysts, and 100Unicorns dominated seed-stage funding. SoftBank Vision Fund, Lathe Investment, and Sofina topped the late-stage investment charts. US-based Accel led with 34 deals, while Blume Ventures expanded its domestic footprint with investments in seven new startups. RBI urges responsible fintech innovation In March, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) called on fintech firms and digital payment companies to pursue 'responsible innovation' while conforming to regulatory standards. RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra's meeting with leaders from the fintech and non-bank payments sector signalled a notable shift in tone, following a period of crackdowns on non-compliant firms under the former governor's tenure. In a sign of regulatory easing, the RBI also reversed some of its previous measures, such as lifting additional risk-weight requirements for bank loans to top-rated non-banking financial companies.
