Pogačar beats Van der Poel in sprint to win stage 4 of Tour de France

ROUEN, France (AP) — Tadej Pogačar showed his sprinting skills by beating Mathieu Van der Poel in a dash to the line to win the hilly fourth stage of the Tour de France on Tuesday.
Van der Poel was the better sprinter of the two at the end of Sunday's second stage and looked set to clinch a second win in this year's race when he attacked about 200 meters from out and led.
But the defending Tour champion somehow found another gear to surge past him at the line, then pumped his fists in celebration.
They both have exactly the same overall time of 16 hours, 46 minutes after four stages, and count one stage win each, but Van der Poel kept the yellow jersey because of better finishing positions in the other two stages.
The 174-kilometer stage suited allrounders, starting from Amiens and ending with five consecutive small climbs to the Normandy city of Rouen.
The first of the climbs — Côte Jacques Anquetil — bore the name of a five-time Tour champion. The Frenchman dominated cycling in the 1960s, when he also won the Giro d'Italia twice and the Spanish Vuelta.
The peloton's pace picked up strongly heading into the last two climbs, with speeds reaching 60 kph (37 mph). Pogačar attacked on the last climb up Rampe Saint-Hilaire and initially dropped archrival Jonas Vingegaard, but the two-time Tour winner responded well and caught up.
But this time roles were reversed as the Slovenian star claimed the 18th stage win of his Tour career.
Vingegaard finished third.

Rays ace Shane McClanahan takes step toward his big league return after shutout inning in minors

Associated Press PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (AP) — Tampa Bay Rays ace Shane McClanahan took a step toward returning to the major leagues after a nearly two-year absence, not allowing a hit or run in one inning of work Tuesday in a Florida Complex League game. McClanahan, who last pitched in the majors on Aug. 2, 2023, before undergoing his second Tommy John surgery, also struck out a batter and walked one. McClanahan, a 28-year-old left-hander, was on schedule to start the Rays' season opener this year before leaving his final spring training start because of an inflamed nerve in his left triceps. Tampa Bay drafted McClanahan in the first round in 2018. He went 10-6 with a 3.43 ERA in 25 starts in his first big league season in 2021, finishing seventh in voting for AL Rookie of the Year. The two-time All-Star went 11-2 with a 3.29 ERA in 21 starts before he got hurt in 2023. ___ AP MLB: recommended Item 1 of 3 in this topic

Top 2026 NHL draft prospect Gavin McKenna says he's committing to Penn State

Associated Press Gavin McKenna said he is committing to Penn State, leaving the Canadian Hockey League for the U.S. college ranks in a long-anticipated decision by one of the sport's most anticipated prospects since Connor McDavid. McKenna's jump highlights how much the junior developmental hockey landscape has changed in North America since the NCAA's landmark decision in November to lift its ban on CHL player participation. After word of McKenna's destination leaked Monday, he made the announcement on 'SportsCenter' on Tuesday. It coincidentally came 15 years to the day of 'The Decision' when LeBron James revealed on ESPN he was leaving Cleveland for Miami. 'It was a super tough decision,' McKenna said, before putting on a Penn State hat. McKenna, who doesn't turn 18 until December, is regarded a generational talent and has for the past two years been projected as the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NHL draft. ___ AP Hockey Writer Stephen Whyno contributed. ___ AP college sports: recommended Item 1 of 1 in this topic
