Stone pelting incidents on trains in South Central Railway (SCR) zone sees 10x rise between '21-25; Vande Bharat trains among most affected
Statistics available with SCR show that from 37 cases in 2021, stone-pelting incidents shot to 359 in 2024. The attacks resulted in injuries to 62 passengers.
Between January 2021 and June 2025, railways recorded 1,059 incidents and apprehended 831 persons in the zone. In fact, in the last six months alone, the zone recorded 168 such incidents.

The four Vande Bharat trains heading towards Visakhapatnam, Tirupati, and Bengaluru have been particularly affected, with 187 cases among all 250 passenger trains, accounting for most of these incidents.
That apart, stone-pelting incidents were also reported on mail/express, special trains, and superfast trains.
They have emerged as a serious security challenge, said SCR authorities. In several cases it was children playing near railway tracks who unintentionally pelted stones at passing trains. "Often times it is also people under the influence of alcohol who indulge in stone-pelting," said a senior railway official.

More coaches for Hyd-Bengaluru Vande Bharat
The Kacheguda-Yesvantpur Vande Bharat Express train will now run with enhanced passenger carrying capacity. The train, which was earlier operating with eight coaches with a 530-passenger capacity, is being enhanced with a revised composition of 16 coaches with a 1,128-passenger capacity from July 10.
Since the introduction of the regular services, the train operated with more than 100% patronage consistently. Sandeep Mathur, general manager, South Central Railway, said that with the doubling of coaches, more rail passengers will now be able to avail themselves of Vande Bharat train services between the IT cities, i.e., Hyderabad and Bengaluru.

Dreaded criminal linked to Khemka murder killed in gunfight with police
1 2 Patna: A notorious criminal, who was aware of the murder plot of businessman Gopal Khemka, was killed in a police encounter at Damaria Ghat in Patna City area early on Tuesday, police said. The accused, Vikas alias Raja (30), a native of Nalanda district, had several criminal cases registered against him. The encounter occurred around 3.30am when police, acting on intelligence inputs, attempted to arrest Raja for interrogation in connection with the Khemka murder investigation. On spotting the approaching officers, Raja, who had been evading arrest, allegedly opened fire. Police returned fire in self-defence, inflicting multiple gunshot wounds on him. He was initially taken to Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and later referred to Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH), where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment. His body was sent for post-mortem examination. Raja, according to police records, was involved in at least four murder cases, along with six to seven incidents of loot, dacoity and multiple violations of the Arms Act. Raja, who was approached first as an arms supplier, has now been neutralised. This should send a strong message. Those who engage in supplying weapons or similar criminal activities will face severe consequences. The police are fully committed to acting firmly and will not hesitate to respond when attacked. " Following the encounter, Raja's family members rushed to the spot. His father alleged that police in plainclothes came to their home on Monday night and took Raja away under the pretext of questioning. The family said Raja had been living in rented accommodation in Patna City and had two sons — the younger of whom was killed in 2015. Raja's mother also disputed the police's version of events. She claimed her son, despite facing "two to four cases," had been employed in Chennai and had only recently returned home. "He was sitting quietly near the brick kiln when the police shot him," she alleged.

Based on her complaint, we traced Murthy and recovered the chain. He stole valuables worth over Rs 15 lakh from three houses in Konanakunte, Avalahalli, and Suddaguntepalya in the first half of this year. He pledged the stolen gold ornaments to repay the loans taken to invest in online cricket betting," an officer said. Police said Murthy's father Annappa is said to have disposed of his property in Shivamogga to repay some of the loans made by him.
