‘Other Bihar cricketers like Ishan Kishan…': Vaibhav Suryavanshi's father makes ‘adamant' decision for domestic career

Hindustan Times04-05-2025
Vaibhav Suryavanshi's stellar rise in Indian cricket continues, with the 14-year old well and truly announcing his arrival with the fastest-ever century by an Indian player in the IPL in Rajasthan Royals' recent win over Gujarat Titans. Suryavanshi is considered one of the brightest stars in Indian cricket, showing his ability to match up to some of the best bowlers in the world at just the age of 14, packing plenty of power and the bravery to go with it.
Nevertheless, Suryavanshi will undoubtedly be a work in progress given his age, especially as his follow-up two-ball duck to the century demonstrated. While that added edge will certainly come with age and experience, there have been calls from far and wide to ensure that Suryavanshi's development be handled well.
Suryavanshi hails from the town of Samastipur in the state of Bihar, and his family have already spoken about committing to the Bihar cricket system, putting their faith in the Bihar Cricket Association (BCA) to help him develop into the cricketer he has the potential to be, rather than defecting to one of the richer and more powerful state boards.
In an interview with Indian Express, Vaibhav's uncle Rajeev explained that Vaibhav's father was 'adamant' that the southpaw batter would grow up representing Bihar through the domestic levels of cricket.
'Other Bihar players like Ishan Kishan had to go to other states to get noticed, but my brother was adamant that Vaibhav would shine from Bihar,' Rajeev said. 'Many advised him to send Vaibhav to Delhi, Kolkata or Mumbai, saying that Bihar has no opportunities for cricket talent, but he wanted Vaibhav to be a Bihar cricketer.'
Suryavanshi made his First Class debut for Bihar in January 2024 as a 13-year-old, that being the occasion that truly brought him into national consciousness. Suryavanshi's debut came against domestic giants Mumbai in a match played in Patna.
While Suryavanshi didn't have the brightest start for his domestic team, his quality shone through at the U-19 level, where he blazed a century against Australia in a Youth Test in Chennai, before opening the batting at the U-19 Asia Cup, alongside fellow IPL 2025 breakthrough star Ayush Mhatre.
Suryavanshi continues to star for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, getting an extended run due to the injury absence of captain Sanju Samson.

ENG vs IND, 5th Test: Chris Woakes sustains shoulder injury while fielding

England all-rounder Chris Woakes appeared to sustain a serious shoulder injury whilst fielding during Day 1 of the fifth Test between England and India at The Oval. He sustained the injury whilst attempting to prevent a boundary during the 57th over of the Indian batting innings. Woakes chased a Karun Nair off-drive from mid-off, and attempted a dive in order to prevent the ball from reaching the boundary. Woakes appeared in immediate discomfort, and did not attempt to get up to return the ball. He was then assisted from the field by a member of the England support staff. Woakes had already played an important part in the first day of the Test, sending down 14 overs and dismissing Indian opener K.L. Rahul. His further participation in the Test remains to be seen.

‘Karun Nair's career is back': Dinesh Karthik announces after he keeps India alive with first fifty since 303 in 2016

When India captain Shubman Gill got the number of changes in the XI mixed up, he didn't miss Karun Nair's name. He was pretty clear about his return in the XI in place of Shardul Thakur, and so was the Indian team management about their eight-batter theory. Right through this five-Test series, they have preferred a batting option at No.8 and when Rishabh Pant was injured and Nitish Kumar Reddy was already out, it was a given that they would fall back to Karun Nair. India's Karun Nair celebrates his half century during the first day of the fifth Test cricket match(PTI) Karun Nair's second chance hadn't really gone to plan. In the six chances that he got, the experienced right-hander failed to register a single half-century despite getting his eyes on pretty much every occasion. He was dropped from the XI at Old Trafford, which many believed was a full stop on his career. But as Karun Nair has shown time and again in his career, Never say never. Karun Nair was not only back in the Indian XI but also holding their hopes of a series-levelling win. At Stumps on Day 1 of the fifth Test, Nair was unbeaten on 52. It was his first 50-plus score in Test cricket since making that record-breaking triple century (303) in Chennai in 2016 against the same opposition. And it came on the most difficult pitch of this series. It came at a time when his career was on the line. The visitors got the first taste of the English conditions this series as The Oval greeted them with a green top. The overcast, gloomy and damp conditions added to the difficult level as the ball continued to zip around right through the day. But Karun Nair stood tall. He batted at three, batted at six but No.5 brought luck for him. Karun hit seven fours and his unbeaten 52 off 98 balls to take India to 204 for six at stumps. Former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik said Karun Nair's career was anything but over with the kind of knock he played on tough conditions on Thursday. "Well played Karun Nair. That's a high-quality fifty in real tough conditions. Karun Nair's career is well and truly back. If he hadn't played this Test then the team management could well have looked beyond him," Karthik said on commentary. Former India fast bowler Varun Aaron was mighty impressed with the way Karun kept soft hands while playing at deliveries outside the off stump. His habit of hanging the bat outside the off stump had brought about his downfall multiple times in the series but not on Day 1 of the series-finale. "This could have been his last chance, but he has capitalised. The pitch was doing a lot, but Karun Nair is standing tall. What stood out was Karun Nair's purposeful attempt to have soft hands to deliveries outside off stump," Aaron said on JioHostar after the day's play.
