‘Congress used the phrase ‘Hindu terror' to serve its vote-bank politics': Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde after Malegaon verdict

Indian Express5 days ago
Following the acquittal of all accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast case by a special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde Thursday launched a sharp attack on the Congress. He accused the party of pushing a political narrative of 'saffron terror' and demanding a public apology for what he termed a '17-year-long injustice' against Hindus.
'The NIA court's verdict has finally cleared the stain unfairly placed on the Hindu community. Those who labelled it as 'saffron terrorism' must now apologise publicly,' Shinde said, addressing reporters in Mumbai. 'The slogan 'Garv se kaho hum Hindu hain (Say proudly that we are Hindus)' will now echo louder across the nation,' he added.
Shinde referred specifically to Lieutenant Colonel (retd) Prasad Purohit and former BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur (Sadhvi Pragya), who were acquitted along with five others after a prolonged legal battle. All seven had been accused in connection with the 2008 blasts in Malegaon, which killed six people and injured over 100.
'The accused were falsely implicated and subjected to immense physical and mental trauma. Despite this, Congress used the phrase 'Hindu terror' to serve its vote-bank politics,' Shinde alleged. 'This was not just a legal matter but an assault on the identity and patriotism of Hindus,' he added.
While the Shiv Sena leader hailed the verdict as 'a long-overdue vindication,' he criticised the Congress for what he described as 'an orchestrated attempt to malign an entire community'. He also asserted that his party had stood by the accused throughout the legal process, 'because our fight was based on truth and justice.'
'The Hindu community will never forget this injustice. For Hindus, patriotism is not just a sentiment; it is a religious duty,' Shinde said. 'Congress leaders now need to answer – what was the basis of this fabricated 'Hindu terrorism' narrative? What do they have to say now?'

'Will not let India...': Big statement by Bangladesh High Commissioner; on relations with China and Pakistan, says...

Hindus in Bangladesh in distress, violence increased against...., 2442 cases reported in 330 days, Anti-India Yunus to... New Delhi: Ever since Mohammad Yunus took charge of the government in Bangladesh following the toppling of the Sheikh Hasina government, Dhaka has grown closer to China and Pakistan. The proximity of Bangladesh to China and Pakistan is considered a big threat to India. However, Bangladesh's High Commissioner to India, Riaz Hamidullah, has rejected such apprehensions as he assured India that Bangladesh's land cannot become a base for anti-India activities. In an interview with The Print, Hamidullah said that India-Bangladesh relations are decades old, which are based on mutual trust, shared economic interests and deep cultural ties. In such a situation, it is not right to say that there is any threat to the relations between the two countries. His comments hold a lot of significance as concerns have been growing about Dhaka's diplomatic relations with Beijing and Islamabad. What did Bangladesh's High Commissioner to India say? Hamidullah admitted that relations between Bangladesh and India have deteriorated in recent months as he expressed concern over India's suspension of medical visas and cross-border exchanges. He said Bangladesh has cultural ties with India. He gave the example of DPS Dhaka, an Indian school running in Bangladesh. Hamidullah said that despite political noise, economic relations are also continuing, and the bilateral trade is worth $13 billion. Calling the incidents of violence against religious minorities in Bangladesh sporadic, he asked not to generalize it. He said that there are more than 30,000 worship pavilions in Bangladesh and a few incidents of vandalism or violence do not define the entire society. What did he say about Pakistan and China? Hamidullah rejected the notion that Bangladesh's dealings with Pakistan or China reflect ideological change. He said, 'Defence level talks were held with Pakistan even during Sheikh Hasina's tenure. There has been no significant change in our policy. We want to make it clear that Bangladesh will not allow anyone to use its territory for hostile purposes.' On relations with China, Riaz Hamidullah said that this is due to economic reasons, adding that economic necessity promotes engagement but not cultural affinity.

Brother duo from Bihar caught in Surat for getting Aadhaar forged to get accommodation, land job

Surat police have nabbed a man and his younger brother — both natives of Bihar — for allegedly procuring Aadhaar cards with a fake name to get a house and land a job at a diamond factory in Surat. While the elder brother was produced before a court on Tuesday and sent to a two-day police remand, the younger one, a juvenile, was sent to a children's remand home in Katargam. Special Operations Group officials had on Monday evening reached a flat on the third floor of Shiv Heritage Apartment in Surat's Sagrampura area, acting on a tip-off about the accused. They found two persons, who identified themselves as Pradeep Maurya and Pankaj Maurya and claimed that they hailed from Bihar's Katihar district. The duo said they were working at a diamond factory in Katargam. However, they soon confessed to having forged Aadhaar cards. The elder brother was identified as Mohammed Afridi Wajidali (25). The younger brother is 17-year-old, officers said. The accused said they had been facing issues while they were searching for an accommodation. They said that when they found a house in Sagrampura, they were allegedly told that the owner only rents it out to people from the Hindu community. The accused then got Aadhaar cards made with fake Hindu names and started to live in the flat on rent. They also allegedly used the same Aadhaar card to land a job at the factory, officers said.. Police arrested Wajidali under BNS sections 319 (cheating by personation), 336(2) (forgery), 336(3)(forgery with the intent to cheat), 338 (forgery of valuable security, wills and related documents), 340 (using forged documents as genuine). Talking to The Indian Express, Athwalines police inspector H K Solanki said, 'We have arrested the elder brother and the younger one was sent to a children's remand home. They hail from Bihar and were staying in Surat and working at a diamond unit for the past one year. They had got documents forged to get a place to stay and a job in the city. We are trying to dig out more information. We are also trying to ascertain if they had any other motive.'

Big INDIA bloc parties reject smaller allies' plea to find a way to let Parliament run

NEW DELHI: As the opposition's protest seeking a discussion on the special intensive revision (SIR) of Bihar electoral rolls has brought Parliament to a halt, some members in the INDIA bloc ranks Tuesday urged the alliance brass to find a way to run Parliament, but their plea was shot down. Sources said at the meeting of the INDIA bloc on Tuesday morning, CPM's John Brittas, RSP's NK Premachandran and IUML's ET Mohammed Basheer felt that the Parliament session should not be washed out. While Brittas is a Rajya Sabha MP, Basheer and Premachandran are in Lok Sabha. However, their plea was countered strongly by the bigger parties of the bloc like Congress , DMK, TMC, SP, Shiv Sena, RJD, who felt the govt cannot get away by evading a discussion on a politically critical issue like the electoral rolls review. With the opposition programmes targeting the Election Commission lined up in coming days - dinner meeting at Rahul Gandhi's residence on Thursday, Bangalore protest led by Rahul on Friday, and the joint march to EC on Aug 11 - the opposition is unlikely to relent till then. A wider consensus to raise a protest over the electoral roll revision was evolved last week after a discussion on Pahalgam-Operation Sindoor in the two Houses over three days. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 25 Brilliant Plant Hacks That Will Change the Way You Grow Things Learn More Undo As they gathered to chart out the future strategy, SIR came to dominate the discussion. Opposition leaders were told by Rahul that issues being raised in Parliament were important but BJP was winning elections by manipulating the electoral rolls. He told INDIA bloc members that a "deep dive" on voters' list done by Congress in a sample Bangalore seat has unearthed serious irregularities, and the govt should be forced to discuss the subject in Parliament. Since then, the opposition has mounted vigorous protests in the parliament every morning.
