Trump: Deal to buy TikTok almost done, US to start talks with China in next few days
Trump said that discussions on this matter with Beijing are scheduled for Monday or Tuesday (July 7 or 8).
'We pretty much have a deal now. I think we are going to start talking to China on Monday or Tuesday, perhaps with President Xi Jinping or one of his representatives.
'We think we probably have to get it approved by China. Not definitely, but probably,' the US leader told reporters aboard his plane.
On June 29, Trump told Fox News that a 'group of very wealthy people' was ready to buy TikTok from ByteDance. He then noted that he would be ready to name these buyers in about two weeks.
In turn, a spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in the US, Liu Pengyu, told TASS that Beijing would follow its laws and regulations in matters concerning TikTok. — BERNAMA-TASS

Investment firm Azoria postpones Tesla ETF after Musk plans political party
WASHINGTON, July 6 — Investment firm Azoria Partners said yesterday it will postpone the listing of its Azoria Tesla Convexity exchange traded fund after Tesla CEO Elon Musk said he was forming a new US political party. Musk made the announcement a day after polling his followers on the X social media platform he owns, declaring, 'Today the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.' Azoria was set to launch the Tesla ETF, which would invest in the electric vehicle company's shares and options, next week. However, following Musk's announcement Azoria CEO James Fishback posted on X several critical comments of the new party and repeated his support for US President Donald Trump. That culminated in a post where Fishback announced the postponement of the ETF. 'I encourage the Board to meet immediately and ask Elon to clarify his political ambitions and evaluate whether they are compatible with his full-time obligations to Tesla as CEO,' Fishback said. The announcement undermines the confidence shareholders had in Tesla's future after Musk said in May he was stepping back from his role leading the Department of Government Efficiency, Fishback said. Tesla did not immediately respond to a Reuters' request for comment. The announcement from Musk comes after Trump signed his self-styled 'big, beautiful' tax-cut and spending bill into law on Friday, which Musk fiercely opposed. Azoria is also offering the Azoria 500 Meritocracy ETF that only invests in the top 500 US companies that do not impose hiring targets under diversity, equity and inclusion programmes, according to its website. — Reuters

China hits back at EU with reciprocal ban on major medical equipment contracts
BEIJING: China hit back on Sunday at an EU ban on Chinese firms from major medical equipment purchases with a reciprocal bar on European companies in the latest trade salvo between the two economies. China's finance ministry said in a statement that European Union companies, with the exception of 'those with European capital established in China, will have to be excluded' from orders of more than 45 million yuan ($6.3 million). Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited the EU's headquarters, as well as France and Germany, over the past week in a bid to improve relations with the 27-member bloc. However, deep frictions remain over economic ties, including a yawning trade deficit of $357.1 billion between China and the EU. China's ban, which comes into effect from Sunday, covers a wide range of products, from prosthetic devices and parts to medical machinery and surgical instruments. Beijing's finance ministry also specified that the proportion of products from the EU could not exceed 50 percent in bids from non-European companies. The EU drew an angry response from Beijing, and an accusation of double standards, when it banned Chinese firms from government medical device purchases worth more than five million euros ($5.8 million) in retaliation for limits Beijing places on access to its own market. The European Commission said at the time the ban was a reaction to 'China's longstanding exclusion of EU-made medical devices from Chinese government contracts'. According to Brussels, just under 90 percent of public procurement contracts for medical devices in China 'were subject to exclusionary and discriminatory measures' against EU firms. 'China has repeatedly expressed, through bilateral dialogue, its willingness to resolve these disputes appropriately through consultations, dialogue and bilateral arrangements in the field of public procurement,' China's commerce ministry said in a separate statement. Over the last three years, Brussels and Beijing have come into conflict in a number of economic sectors, including electric cars, the rail industry, solar panels and wind turbines. – AFP

Umno confirms alliance commitment ahead of GE16
LUMUT: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has confirmed that Umno will not contest solo in the 16th General Election. Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Umno president, stressed the party's ongoing commitment to Barisan Nasional. He also dismissed claims that the party's recent losses in several by-elections were due to its alliance with component parties within Barisan and Pakatan Harapan (PH). 'Umno and Barisan have never contested on their own. I promise and declare that we will contest under the Barisan flag in the upcoming general election," he said, adding that it would not sideline its partners: MIC, MCA, Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah and Pakatan. 'This idea of going solo is being voiced not just in Kedah, but also yesterday in Johor, I heard the same sentiment,' he said when officiating the Lumut Division Umno Representative Meeting at Dewan Merdeka, Majlis Perbandaran Manjung on Sunday (July 6). Zahid added that while Barisan may contest under its banner, it would do so with the support of allies in Pakatan and other component parties. 'They have helped us by reaching out and engaging Chinese voters in support of the BN candidate (for the Mahkota state seat), and we won by a margin of over 20,000... thanks to the support from our friends in other parties,' he said. He emphasised that the setbacks in the last general election serve as a lesson in political strategy, which Umno and Barisan are now adjusting to achieve greater success in the upcoming elections.
