Chime Financial IPO: Digital bank startup reveals revenue as it gears up for stock offering

Fast Company14-05-2025
Digital banking fintech firm Chime disclosed a rise in 2024 revenue in its IPO filing on Tuesday for a long-awaited U.S. stock market launch.
Financial technology companies have increasingly entered the U.S. lending space, aiming to wrest market share from major players such as JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and Citigroup.
Chime's revenue rose to $1.67 billion in the fiscal year ended 2024, up from $1.28 billion, a year earlier.
The IPO window has reopened as markets recover sharply amid progress in trade talks, offering companies an opportunity to list their shares after months of turbulence driven by tariffs.
A strong debut by Chime could pave the way for other IPO candidates, particularly in the technology sector, to move forward with their listings.
'We led the 2017 Series B when few Silicon Valley investors believed, driven by our conviction that Chime could become a category-defining company,' said Simon Wu from Cathay Innovation.
'Today's IPO filing marks an exciting new chapter—not just for Chime, but for the future of inclusive, technology-driven consumer finance.'
San Francisco-based Chime, cofounded by Chris Britt and Ryan King in 2012, provides financial services via a mobile app.
The company has raised $2.65 billion from private investors since its inception, according to data from PitchBook. Its last fundraise round attracted high-profile investors including SoftBank Investment Advisers, General Atlantic and Tiger Global Management.
In August 2021, Chime achieved a valuation of $25 billion during a fundraise. However, the company did not disclose the number of shares it intends to sell or the estimated price band for its listing.
The startup will trade on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol 'CHYM'.
Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs and J.P.Morgan are heading a syndicate of Wall Street investment banks chosen to underwrite the offering.

Alembic Pharma acquires UK-based Utility Therapeutics for $12 million to expand US presence

Alembic Pharmaceuticals Inc., the wholly owned US subsidiary of Alembic Pharmaceuticals Limited, has announced the acquisition of UK-based Utility Therapeutics Ltd. This strategic move marks Alembic's entry into the branded anti-infective segment in the United States, particularly focusing on treatments for urinary tract infections (UTIs). Utility Therapeutics is engaged in developing pharmaceutical products aimed at combating UTIs, a widespread medical condition in the US. The acquisition brings two key assets into Alembic's fold — 'Pivya,' an FDA-approved treatment for uncomplicated UTIs, and 'MEC,' a pipeline product currently under development to address complicated UTI cases. Alembic Pharmaceuticals sees this acquisition as a significant step towards strengthening its presence in the US market with branded specialty products. The deal allows Alembic to market Utility's assets in the US, leveraging the regulatory approvals already in place and continuing the development of promising pipeline therapies. The total consideration for the acquisition is expected to be around $12 million, paid in a staggered manner depending on the achievement of specific milestones. It also includes a provision for profit sharing based on future earnings generated by Utility's products. The transaction does not fall under the related party category, and none of the promoters or group companies have any financial interest in the deal. Completion of the acquisition is anticipated within approximately 30 days, and no additional regulatory approvals are required. This acquisition aligns with Alembic's strategy of expanding its global footprint and diversifying its product offerings in regulated markets like the US. Tesla competitor BYD axes Mexico factory plans

The world's largest electric vehicle maker is halting plans to build a major factory in Mexico due to concerns about US trade policies. On Wednesday, BYD said that the company still plans to expand further into North or South America, but it does not have a timeline for the plan. "Geopolitical issues have a big impact on the automotive industry," Stella Li, an executive vice president, said in an interview with Bloomberg. "Now everybody is rethinking their strategy in other countries. We want to wait for more clarity before making our decision." In September, Bloomberg reported that the EV giant would not announce a major plant investment in Mexico until after the US election. In March, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said BYD had not made a formal offer to invest in the country. President Donald Trump's tariffs have been a big pain point for US and global automakers. Cars coming from Mexico to the US remain subject to a 25% tariff. Car manufacturers have responded in various ways, from offering discounts to shoppers who hope to avoid future price hikes to adding import fees on vehicles built outside the US. Some producers, like Stellantis and Nissan, have cut back on Mexico-based production. In the region, BYD is opening a plant in the Brazilian state of Bahia, the company's first factory outside Asia. In December, Brazilian authorities halted the construction of BYD factory and sued the company, saying that construction workers lived in slavery-like conditions. Over 160 workers had been rescued from the working conditions, according to a statement from a Brazilian labour authority. The statement said that workers were put in "degrading" conditions and had their passports and salaries withheld by a service provider for BYD. At the time, BYD said affected workers had been moved to hotels. It added that it had conducted a "detailed review" of the working and living conditions for subcontracted employees and asked on "several occasions" for the construction firm to make improvements. On Wednesday, Li said the episode prompted the company to reassess its approach to international expansion. "We should slow down, step back from the focus on speed. We need to work more with local companies," she said. "It will take longer, but that's OK." Chinese players, including BYD, Xiaomi, Nio, and Xpeng, have been undercutting Tesla's prices and gaining market share in China and Europe. BYD is on track to sell more than 5 million cars this year, and the company sold more EVs than Tesla in Europe for the first time in April. BYD stock is up 38% so far this year because of strong battery technology, its affordability, and global expansion.

Analyst revises Carvana stock price target ahead of earnings

Hey, Jon Hamm, what are you up to? The veteran actor, who memorably portrayed Don Draper in "Mad Men" and is currently starring in "Your Friends and Neighbors" was caught off guard by a jogging neighbor in a TV ad for Carvana (CVNA) . Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter The ad, entitled "Excuses", rolled out last month and is the first of two commercial spots featuring Hamm In the 30-second spot, we see the actor trying to avoid attending a birthday party for his neighbor's dog by claiming his has to sell his car. The only problem, the ad tells us, is that the online used car retailer makes the process so fast and simple that Hamm's excuse unravels, especially since his car is already sold and loaded onto a Carvana hauler just a few feet away. So now he can go to the party, right? "I just sold my car," the actor replies. "What--are we going to walk?" Carvana's shares aren't walking; they're taking off at warp speed. The Tempe, Arizona-based company's stock has climbed 68% in 2025 and shares have soared 167% from a year ago. shutterstock But it wasn't always that way. Carvana's stock tumbled 99% in 2022 as the company laid off staff. Morgan Stanley pulled its rating and price target on Carvana. "I think most companies that take a big swing generally have multiple near death experiences," Ernest Garcia III, CEO and co-founder of Carvana, said in April during an episode of the 20VC with Harry Stebbins podcast. "There are no stories of companies that make it with no volatility." "There are no stories of companies where people just cheer the whole time and it's like a standing slow clap that never ends," he added. "That's just not how it goes." Carvana went public in 2017 and when that happens, Garcia said, "it's just cold, it's ruthless, it's just results." "You have more moves than you think," he said. "When you find yourself with your back against the wall, you can find action that you might not have found otherwise. It makes risk a little less risky because when you find yourself in that spot, if you have problem solvers around. you can usually do more than people imagine." This could involve fundraising or finding a way to make dollars go further, or looking for ways to more efficient. "The lesson that I feel like I learned is you need to take risk to do something meaningful," Garcia said, "and I think risk is less risky than most people believe it is." Famed short-seller Jim Chanos had some harsh things to say about Carvana during 2025 Forbes Iconoclast Summit last month. "Carvana is a misunderstood story," he said. "The Street believes it is an epic turnaround, but in fact, the company is still losing money. Although it is priced as a growth stock, the business is cyclical." He said the company's gross margins are a product of aggressive accounting that inflates both unit economics and corporate profitability while excluding many components that other auto dealers typically include. Carvana is scheduled to report second quarter earnings on July 30. Citizens JMP raised the firm's price target on Carvana to $440 from $275 on July 2 and kept an outperform rating on the shares after assuming coverage of the name, according to The Fly. The firm said that Carvana created a consumer experience with an net promoter score of 69 by combining proprietary software to enable transparent selection of tens of thousands of vehicles, a nationwide logistics network, and a reconditioning service that enables it to price below brick and mortar dealers. Citizens JMP said that it believes Carvana can further grow while pushing toward its medium-term EBITDA margin target of 13.5%. On June 13 JPMorgan said that Carvana shares were "due for a pause" after materially outperforming peers year-to-date. The firm reduced estimates for the second quarter, saying recent prime deal disclosures suggest a slightly larger than expected gain on sale margin compression quarter-over-quarter. JPMorgan believes the second quarter could be the first time in several quarters that Carvana's EBITDA results are likely to miss expectations. The analyst kept an overweight rating on the shares with a $325 price target.
