Man takes truck for a spin in Chennai, caught after 9 km chase
CHENNAI: The busy GST Road on Tuesday afternoon witnessed a high-speed chase by the police and motorists after a man sped away with a lorry that was parked on the roadside near Peanur toll plaza. Sources said the 37-year-old man, suspected to be suffering from mental illness, managed to drive the vehicle for around 9 km before he was caught after the vehicle crashed into a roadside barricade.
The chase was on a par with the scene taken out of an action thriller, as at one point of time, Special Sub-Inspector (Traffic) Balamurugan, in a bid to persuade the man to stop the truck laden with M-Sand, climbed on to the vehicle's footboard where he clung on until it came to a halt.
Sources said the man, hailing from Tirunelveli, took away the truck when its driver, Kamalakannan, stepped out to recharge the FASTag.

IIT Madras Intern Sexually Harassed By Food Court Staff
Chennai: A 22-year-old man has been arrested allegedly for sexually harassing an intern at the IITM (Madras), police said on Saturday. The arrested was working at a food court inside the institute and he allegedly sexually harassed a 20-year-old intern on the campus on June 25 night, police said. Taking suo moto cognizance of the offence, the National Commission for Women chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar wrote to Tamil Nadu DGP calling for a fair and time-bound investigation under relevant provisions of BNS, 2023. 'NCW has also directed the authorities to ensure the victim receives immediate medical and psychological support,' the Commission said in a post on the social media platform X on Saturday. The incident occurred around 7.30 pm when the woman intern was walking alone in the campus. According to Kotturpuram police, the man who held a stick went close to her and pulled her hair. Immediately, the intern raised an alarm. The security personnel on the campus rushed to her rescue. The police later identified the suspect as one Roshan Kumar, a native of Maharashtra, who was working at a food court in IIT (M). He was arrested and remanded on June 26. Further investigation is on. Meanwhile, responding to the incident, the IIT (M) stated that an unfortunate incident took place at the IIT Madras campus on June 25, when a contractual employee of a vendor operating on the campus "misbehaved" with a woman student, visiting from other institute. 'The girl raised an alarm and the culprit was held by the institute security and handed over to the local police. IIT (M) has a zero tolerance policy towards sexual harassment and we are committed to provide a safe and secure campus to all,' the institute said in a statement.

Trial courts shouldn't summon anyone as accused without proper reason: Delhi HC
Trial courts must not causally issue summons to an individual as an accused without good reason, the Delhi high court said while quashing the summons issued to a man in connection with a ₹ 98 lakh cheating case. The man in this case had approached the high court against a trial court's September 28, 2013, order summoning him as an accused. (HT Archive) A bench of justice Amit Mahajan observed that issuance of summons is a serious issue and the summoning order must reflect application of mind. 'Issuance of summons is a serious issue and it is imperative that the summoning order shows due application of mind and examination of the facts of the case as well as the evidence on record,' said justice Mahajan in his June 23 ruling. 'Merely taking note of the facts and recording prima facie satisfaction, without giving any reasons for the same, is insufficient.' The man in this case had approached the high court against a trial court's September 28, 2013, order summoning him as an accused. The case had stemmed from a complaint filed by a company, M/S Indiabulls Securities Limited, which trades stocks, under Section 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code. The company had alleged that the man dishonestly induced it to open an account in his name and availed the facility of margin trading, where investors borrow funds from their broker to increase their purchasing power and potentially amplify their returns, to buy shares but failed to repay the same despite multiple margin calls. The man's plea before the high court said that the allegations levelled against him were absurd and improbable in nature and the order was passed mechanically without appreciating the ingredients of the offence. It said that the company had caused losses to him by selling his shares worth ₹ 7 crore without his express instructions. The company had argued that the plea was frivolous and not maintainable since it was filed seven years after passing of the order. Justice Mahajan remarked that the summons were issued without due application of mind, appreciating or scrutinising the material and the company sought to give a criminal cloak to civil proceedings for recovery of dues. 'The impugned order is unreasonable and summons have been arbitrarily issued against the petitioner. Although the learned magistrate has recorded its satisfaction about the existence of prima facie case in the impugned order, however on a bare perusal of the complaint as well as pre- summoning evidence, the said observation seems to be without any application of mind,' the judgement said. It added that the allegations did not disclose an element of criminality and continuation of the criminal proceedings against the man would amount to abuse of law. The judge also sounded a note of caution against the misuse of criminal proceedings. 'Criminal proceedings ought not to be misused to wreak vengeance or harass the other side,' the court maintained.

Woman intern sexually assaulted on IIT Madras campus; man arrested after two days
CHENNAI: A 20-year-old woman intern was accosted and sexually assaulted on IIT Madras campus by a food court employee on June 25. Two days later, the Kotturpuram police tracked down the culprit – Roshan Kumar of Mumbai, working at Mumbai Chat for the past six months – and arrested him on Friday. While IIT-M's official statement later on Friday evening said its security personnel traced Roshan Kumar, 22, and handed him over to police, the latter said that on receiving a complaint from the IIT-M management, they took over the probe, scanned CCTV camera footage and arrested the culprit. According to police, the woman, who is from another institute and is undergoing an internship at IIT-M, was walking near the institute's open-air theatre around 9.15pm on Wednesday when she was accosted by a man who threatened her with a stick, pulled her hair and molested her. She managed to raise an alarm and escape and reported the incident to campus security.
