New report finds Bybit's rapid response to historic hack helped prevent systemic collapse in crypto markets

Zawya6 days ago
Bybit, the world's second-largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume, has been featured in a new research report by Glassnode, the leading onchain market intelligence provider trusted by top-tier financial institutions worldwide. The findings highlight Bybit's unprecedented recovery rate and how the exchange's zero-time response helped contain a potential crisis, absorbing market shock that could have sent the crypto industry into a downward spiral.
The comprehensive report, titled Digital Asset Market Resilience: A Deep Dive into the Bybit-Lazarus Hack, analyzes the timeline, trading activity, and critical market data from February 2025's unprecedented cyber attack—the largest crypto hack in history at a hefty $1.4 billion—while benchmarking it against major disruption events across both the digital asset and traditional financial markets. Defying historical patterns of financial crises and crypto collapses, the industry's response to the Bybit-Lazarus hack heralds a new era of digital asset market resilience.
Perpetual Open Interest and Volumes Recovery
The report examined the performance of three key assets traded on Bybit: BTC, ETH, and SOL. A day after the hack on February 22, ETH open interest on Bybit experienced one of its most severe contractions on record due to widespread position unwinding and forced deleveraging. However, over the following two months, open interest changes turned predominantly positive, with most values returning to long-term averages and at times exceeding normal volatility thresholds.
Both BTC and SOL followed a similar pattern to ETH's after the breach. According to the report, at the time of publication, all three had been restored to pre-hack levels, with BTC and SOL achieving significant milestones in May—BTC reached a new high in futures perpetual open interest at $8.5 billion, while SOL hit $1.2 billion.
'When examining perpetual trade volumes for the Ethereum asset, we observe stability in trading activity before and after the hack event, with volumes remaining largely unchanged. Additionally, following Ethereum's outperformance in recent weeks, trade volume on Bybit has surged, reaching a new all-time high of $8.5B/day, a remarkable milestone given that Ethereum was the primary asset targeted in the hack,' wrote the analysts in the report.
Narrowing Spreads: Liquidity Conditions Stabilized
Following the hack, Bybit's deep liquidity—long considered one of its key competitive advantages—was challenged. Its market liquidity experiencing immediate stress as bid-ask spreads widened drastically and market depth contracted sharply. The phenomenon indicated widespread participant withdrawal during the period of uncertainty. The exchange completed a record 350,000 withdrawals within 12 hours after the breach.
However, both metrics have shown steady recovery since mid-April, with bid-ask spreads returning to near pre-incident levels and market depth actually surpassing pre-hack values by May, signaling restored market maker confidence and normal trading conditions.
Breaking the Crisis Pattern: Why the Bybit Hack Didn't Trigger Industry Collapse
Instead of cascading into industry-wide panic and systemic pressure, the hacking incident left only a temporary dent in Bybit's liquidity before the exchange bounced back to pre-hack levels.
To assess Bybit's operational stability, Glassnode developed a proprietary model based on two key indicators: Internal Reshuffling Ratio and Whale Withdrawal Ratio. Both metrics showed a period of post-hack spikes before returning to normal levels.
The report attributed the prevention of market spillover to Bybit's "swift operational response, transparent communication, and strong internal controls," which enabled the exchange to protect customer funds, maintain platform integrity, and contain contagion risk.
The report adds to growing analytical literature on the historic hacking incident, whose aftermath demonstrated the industry's evolving resilience by avoiding systemic collapse seen in previous crises like FTX and Terra. Bybit not only contained potential market-wide damage but saw key assets reach new trading records, proving institutional-grade practices are now embedded in digital asset markets. This incident marks a pivotal shift in crypto's capacity to absorb major disruptions, potentially transforming investor confidence and accelerating industry maturation.

Crypto adoption will be driven by high-growth markets, with or without the US

Opinion by: Dominic Schwenter, chief operating officer of Lisk The US is in the middle of a crypto boom. Exchange-traded fund approvals have opened the door to institutional adoption, liquidity is increasing and regulatory clarity is beginning to take shape under a more crypto-aligned administration. Filings from the Securities and Exchange Commission referencing blockchain hit an all-time high in February 2025, signaling a broader shift in how seriously the technology is being taken at the highest levels. This momentum is good for the industry. US-based crypto companies have spent nearly a decade building through regulatory uncertainty, and they deserve the attention and rewards that are finally arriving. Is institutional support finally showing up? It's overdue — and well-earned. Zooming in on the US too much, however, puts the industry at risk of missing what's happening elsewhere. Some of the most important crypto adoption today takes root in places far outside the spotlight. The most exciting crypto adoption isn't happening on Wall Street. It is unfolding in high-growth markets where people use crypto not to speculate but out of necessity. These communities didn't wait for headlines. They built through every cycle and are now setting the pace for where Web3 is going next. High-growth markets are leading in adoption Fifteen of the top 20 countries on Chainalysis's 2024 Global Crypto Adoption Index are in high-growth regions such as Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines and Nigeria. These aren't just speculative hotspots. In many of these countries, crypto is part of daily life. Unlike boom-and-bust markets, adoption here hasn't wavered. It is grounded in utility. In many of these economies, crypto helps families facilitate remittances, offers a safer way to store value when local currencies aren't stable and lets small businesses move money without friction. In the West, crypto still carries the sheen of a high-risk investment. In high-growth markets, it's already embedded into daily life. That's what real adoption looks like. Builders are shifting to high-growth markets As steady, practical usage rises, builder activity follows. Currently, the global developer map is changing fast. According to the 2024 Electric Capital Developer Report, Asia now accounts for 32% of active crypto developers — a massive jump from just 12% in 2015. Over the same period, the US's share dropped sharply, to 19% from 38%. The blockchain talent pool isn't shrinking; it's moving to where the momentum is. Additionally, 41% of all new crypto developers now come from Asia, illustrating a growing pipeline of builders emerging outside of traditional tech hubs. These aren't just hobbyists but the next wave of founders, architects and engineers choosing to build closer to the problems crypto can solve. This shift isn't limited to Central Asia. Africa, South America and Southeast Asia are all seeing steady increases in developer activity, while North America and Europe continue to decline in relative share. The message is clear: Web3 innovation is no longer anchored to a single geography. It's driven by builders who are closer to real-world needs — and who are designing for them. Blockchain solving real problems The surge in developer activity and adoption across high-growth markets isn't happening in a vacuum. Instead, it's tied to real-world effects. For example, nine of South Africa's largest food and beverage wholesalers have partnered with LovCash, a blockchain-powered end-to-end digital payments platform, to digitize the country's informal trade economy. In just five months, over 3,700 mom-and-pop shops have joined the platform, a rapid shift toward a more connected, cashless ecosystem. Blockchain is serving as a trusted tech infrastructure for South Africa's informal supply chain. In regions where traditional infrastructure is often fragmented or absent, LovCash enables seamless, cashless transactions between small, often unbanked retailers and wholesalers. Beyond simplifying payments, the system provides wholesalers with real-time insights into sales trends and product demand, enabling smarter planning and reducing waste. There's no token speculation here, no flashy NFTs; just a real-world solution to a real-world supply chain challenge. A call to action for Web3 builders What's happening in the US is worthy of celebration, but it's not the whole story. Real-world adoption, momentum from builders and real use cases are accelerating in high-growth markets, where crypto is already making a difference. This is where Web3's long-term effect will be shaped. Builders and investors should stop waiting for validation from Washington or Wall Street and start paying attention to the places where the tech is solving real problems right now. Crypto didn't wait for the US to matter. If the goal is to build something truly global, it's time to follow the people already using it to make things work. UAE sees $34bn crypto surge as Middle East becomes digital asset hub; experts forecast market

The Middle East is no longer just crypto-curious — it's crypto-committed. With the UAE at the forefront, the region is now cementing its position as a global digital asset powerhouse, according to a new report by blockchain solutions firm Mining Grid. Between July 2023 and June 2024, the UAE attracted $34bn (AED124bn) in crypto inflows — a 42 per cent year-on-year surge — fuelled by strong institutional participation and a booming retail market, according to Mining Grid. The wider Middle East saw $338.7bn in crypto inflows during the same period, marking an 11.73 per cent increase and positioning the region as the seventh-largest crypto market in the world. Cryptocurrency in the UAE More than 500,000 daily crypto traders are now active in the UAE, as regulatory clarity, zero capital gains tax, and a tech-savvy youth drive explosive growth. Solaiman AlRifai, Founder and Board member, Mining Grid said: 'The UAE's clear regulations and zero capital gains tax have created the perfect environment for crypto growth. With an engaged and forward-looking population, it's no surprise the country is now seen as the crypto capital of the Arab world.' A defining feature of the UAE's crypto rise is youth engagement. Over 74 per cent of adults aged 25–34 show active interest in crypto, and 21 per cent plan to start trading within the next 12 months. Social platforms like TikTok, WhatsApp, and YouTube are now the leading channels for crypto discovery — highlighting the social-first, mobile-first approach of the region's young investors. However, with nearly half of young users concerned about misinformation, the report warns of the urgent need for trusted platforms and crypto education to ensure safe and sustainable adoption. Rami Alsridi, Founder and CEO, Mining Grid said: 'The UAE has created the ideal environment where curiosity meets clarity. We're seeing a new generation that doesn't just want to invest in crypto but wants to understand it, build with it, and lead its next chapter. 'We're also witnessing a surge in Bitcoin mining, driven by demand for decentralisation, transparency, and energy-conscious innovation.' Other Gulf countries are also gaining crypto momentum: Saudi Arabia leads the GCC in youth adoption and recorded a 153 per cent growth in crypto activity Oman has invested more than $1.1bn in sustainable mining infrastructure to become a regional hub for environmentally friendly crypto operations Bitcoin remains dominant, but Ethereum's ecosystem resilience continues to attract developers and investors alike. Stablecoins now make up 66 per cent of all on-chain transactions in the Middle East, serving as the backbone of digital value transfer. The region is also rapidly embracing the tokenisation of real-world assets, such as real estate and bonds — a shift that is drawing heightened interest from institutional players. Looking ahead to 2026, the Mining Grid report predicts: Youth-led accounts will dominate new crypto onboarding by Q4 2025 Gamified, mobile-first trading platforms will rise in popularity Gulf countries will double down on clean-energy crypto mining models aligned with long-term sustainability goals

US SEC's guidance is first step toward rules governing crypto ETFs

New U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission guidance on disclosure requirements for exchange-traded products tied to cryptocurrencies marked the first step toward approval of dozens of applications for ETFs linked to everything from Solana and XRP to President Donald Trump's eponymous meme coin. The guidance, issued last Tuesday, signaled a dramatic shift by Republican leadership in how the top U.S. markets regulator deals with the crypto sector. The SEC has launched a task force to draft new regulations, refocused its crypto enforcement team and paused or altogether walked away from high-profile enforcement cases that many thought the agency was winning. The 12-page document is the first part of the new landscape for crypto funds that SEC staff members are designing. Asset managers also anticipate guidance from the SEC's division of trading and markets on ways to streamline the application process, said people familiar with the discussions. This should accelerate the pace for new product debuts. "The SEC is moving forward on creating a framework for how they'd like to see all these crypto assets included in investment funds" to address the "explosion" in the number of ETFs now awaiting a regulatory verdict, said Sui Chung, CEO of crypto index provider CF Benchmarks. Industry participants said they saw few surprises so far. "The most interesting and important thing about this guidance is that it exists," said Matt Hougan, chief investment officer of Bitwise Asset Management, which has more than half a dozen crypto ETFs awaiting SEC approval. "It suggests that the SEC acknowledges that crypto ETPs are becoming part of the mainstream and so it's trying to lay down rules of the road to save both issuers and SEC staff time and hassle." The SEC guidance spells out that in order to be approved, issuers must clearly address, in "plain English", all factors that make crypto-based ETFs distinctive, such as custody arrangements and risks of the hyper-competitive landscape. The next document, however, is likely to prove more significant. According to several people familiar with the ongoing discussions, who could not speak publicly due to the confidentiality of those proceedings, the SEC staff is seeking to create a new listing template to replace the current need for exchanges to submit a special form each time they want to list a new crypto product. That form, known as a 19(b)4, asks for an exemption from current listing rules for the specific ETF. Eliminating that from the process could cut the time between filing and launch dates from as much as 240 days to only 75 days. "The SEC is looking for a general rule it can apply to all listings, and currently is going back and forth on precise wording with the exchanges," said a senior executive at one issuer, who added he expected that exchanges will submit that kind of general filing within "days or weeks." Officials at the Nasdaq Stock Market and Cboe declined to comment on these talks; the New York Stock Exchange did not respond to requests for comment. A spokesperson for the SEC also declined comment on the discussions. While ETFs tied to the spot prices of everything from coins like XRP, Polkadot, Dogecoin and the Trump meme coin await an SEC verdict, issuers expect the next batch of crypto products will be tied to Solana, the world's sixth-largest cryptocurrency. That likely will not happen until after the SEC has rolled out the second part of its guidance, pushing the launch date into early autumn, issuers said. Some asset managers are not waiting. Last week, REX Financial and Osprey Funds used a more indirect and complex approach to launch the first U.S. ETF to give investors exposure to Solana, the REX-Osprey Sol + Staking ETF . In contrast to the half-dozen spot Solana ETFs awaiting approval, it invests in a separate entity that in turn will own both Solana and a non-U.S. Solana fund. That structure means REX can bypass the rules governing those commodity funds and leapfrog other issuers, as well as offering investors access to yield via the cryptocurrency "staking" mechanism. In staking, cryptocurrency holders volunteer to take part in validating transactions on the blockchain, checking that the ledger all adds up. In return, validators either receive a share of the transaction fees or newly created cryptocurrencies. "We do think the SEC is taking big steps forward in dealing with cryptocurrency, but it's still the SEC, and not everything has been codified yet," Greg King, CEO of REX Financial, told Reuters. King acknowledged he is trying to get a head start on what is expected to be a fiercely competitive race for market share on new Solana products. The new ETF pulled in $12 million of assets on its first day of trading on Wednesday, July 1, King said. "We'll probably do a spot Solana ETP too, once those rules are in place," he added. "There's no either/or in this situation."
