Newly formed tourism body targets job growth
Increasing employment within the tourism industry in Oman is amongst the top goals of the newly established Oman Tourism Association.
Speaking to the press, the Chairman of the first tourism association in Oman, Awadh Burham Ba Omar, highlighted that employment is one of the Association's primary goals, 'A key focus is on enhancing professionalism and increasing local employment rates within the sector,' he said.
'The local value generated by investment in the tourism sector is substantial, and the sector has the capacity to absorb large numbers of job seekers. It is a vital industry, and we hope to see strong partnerships between the association, investment institutions, professionals in the field, as well as the Ministry and other relevant government bodies,' he added.
According to Ba Omar, the sector – while rich in employment opportunities – comes with challenges in aligning qualifications with market requirements. 'There are indeed opportunities for employment, but the main challenge lies in meeting the requirements of these jobs—whether academic, professional, or experiential. The sector holds great potential, but it requires well-structured training to realize it,' he shared.
A starting point would be to address the gaps in job classifications according to global dynamics, he explained. 'This is where the association plays a critical role. There is currently a significant gap in how roles are categorized and in defining their professional requirements in alignment with international standards. Tourism is a globally competitive industry. You cannot build a local tourism sector without acknowledging the dynamics of global competition. You are offering a product in an international marketplace, which means you are competing regionally and globally. This reality demands that our standards in the tourism sector meet the highest international benchmarks,' he stated.
To this end, the Association is working towards creating clear roadmaps. 'It starts with adopting those standards and then applying them—both in terms of professional practices and training programmes... This would allow young Omanis to progress smoothly through the career ladder, benefit from real growth opportunities, and advance into leadership roles within the sector. What we in the association are working toward is creating a clear and structured roadmap into the sector—so that even students can understand their future career paths within tourism, starting from the classroom,' he said.
Established in December 2024, the Oman Tourism Association is the first civil society organization dedicated to the tourism sector. The association commenced operations on July 1, 2025. According to officials, the association aims to bridge the gap between supervising government authorities and sector stakeholders including investors and professionals.

Oman, Changi airports sign pact to increase passenger experience
Muscat: The agreement signed between Oman Airports and Changi Airport of the Republic of Singapore aims to increase revenues by expanding both aeronautical and non-aeronautical activities within and outside the terminal premises of Muscat International Airport. Eng Ahmed bin Said al Amri, CEO of Oman Airports, stated to the Observer, "We are focusing on the commercial aspect of the business by attracting new airlines and positioning Muscat International Airport as a hub for other airlines. This will increase our revenues through the existing facilities." Changi Airport, which serves over 68 million passengers annually and generates revenues of over $2 billion, is globally recognised as one of the best airports in the world. It has received numerous international awards, including being named the World's Best Airport for twelve consecutive years (2012–2020), and is ranked second worldwide for the quality of its retail services, according to Al Amri. He continued, "The agreement will involve developing strategies to enhance the passenger experience at the airport and increase its utilisation. It will also involve training Omanis to benefit from Changi's experience and apply it to our airport." Eugene Gan, CEO of Changi Airport, said, "We will utilise our industry experience, network and connections to boost passenger traffic and revenues at Muscat International Airport, which has relatively new infrastructure." Regarding potential projects, Gan mentioned, "It may be premature to provide specific details, but we are considering projects such as theme parks as part of our strategy. There are other possibilities both within the terminal building and outside, including cargo-related businesses." Oman Airports also recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Malaysian company WCT International. It will focus on expanding hospitality, entertainment, interactive experiences, and other mixed-use services to increase land investment value and enhance returns from direct and joint ventures.

Youth Centre partners with OOMCO and Nikon to empower Omani freelancers and photographers
Muscat – In a major step to empower Omani youth and enhance their skills across freelance and professional photography, the Youth Centre has signed two cooperation agreements with Oman Oil Marketing Company (OOMCO) and Nikon. The agreements were signed by His Excellency Basil bin Ahmed al Rawas, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth for Sports and Youth, on behalf of the Youth Centre. Representing OOMCO was CEO Tariq bin Mohammed Al Junaidi, while Anil Khimji, Member of the Board of Directors at Khimji Ramdas Group, signed on behalf of Nikon. The agreement with OOMCO will see the launch of the third edition of the Tamakun Self-Employment Program, which aims to empower 200 young men and women who are self-employed. Running from September to December 2025, the programme focuses on equipping youth with the skills and tools needed to transform their talents into sustainable sources of income. The second agreement, signed with Nikon, is designed to support youth in the field of professional photography. It includes the implementation of advanced training programmes and the setup of fully equipped photography and audio studios at the Youth Centre. This initiative aims to create a space for young people to develop their creative capabilities and produce high-quality artistic and visual content. Commenting on the initiative, Ishaq bin Saud Al Manji, Public Relations and Partnerships Officer at the Youth Centre, said the agreements represent the Centre's continued commitment to building strategic partnerships with both governmental and private institutions. 'These partnerships are part of our mission to provide a stimulating environment for Omani youth through quality programmes that develop skills and open pathways for future success,' he said. He noted that the Tamakun programme has already proven its effectiveness in supporting young entrepreneurs and that this third edition aims to be even more impactful. 'We are also confident that the professional training and upgraded facilities made possible through our partnership with Nikon will significantly enhance the artistic and technical skills of Omani youth,' he added. The new agreements are part of broader efforts by the Youth Centre to promote innovation, entrepreneurship, and creative expression among young Omanis, helping them to achieve their ambitions and contribute to the country's development.

Bahla to host mass wedding for 55 couples on July 18
Bahla – Fifty-five young men from Bahla, Dakhliyah will tie the knot in a mass wedding ceremony on July 18 as part of a community-led voluntary initiative aimed at easing the financial burden of marriage. Speaking to Muscat Daily, Saeed al Abri, coordinator of the initiative, said it is designed to support Omani youths start married life without being weighed down by excessive costs. 'We aim to help 55 young men from Bahla get married. One of the key conditions is that the groom must be an Omani resident of the wilayat,' he said. The event will take place at Bahla Club, with the organising committee taking responsibility for key arrangements. 'We will provide the venue and host the wedding dinner, in addition to supporting the grooms with traditional attire, including mussar,' Abri said. 'We expect over 5,000 people to attend the celebration.' According to Abri, the response to the initiative was overwhelming. 'We promoted it across social media platforms. In just a short time, we received more than 1,000 calls and 400 messages from interested individuals across Dakhliyah. After a thorough selection process, 55 youths were chosen to participate in this year's ceremony.' He described the initiative as a practical solution to help curb the high costs of marriage. 'Such initiatives are crucial. Many young people delay marriage due to financial constraints. Mass weddings not only reduce expenses but also promote community solidarity.' Appreciating the private sector for its role in supporting the initiative, Abri said, 'We are grateful to the many private companies that contributed to the success of our effort. Their involvement underscores the importance of public-private partnerships in supporting national causes.' Commenting on a Royal directive issued in January 2025 to launch a marriage support fund in all governorates, Abri called it 'an excellent idea to encourage young Omanis to take the step towards building a stable family life'. He informed that this will be the eighth mass wedding organised in the wilayat and anticipates even higher participation in the coming years.
