What's on the menu at the state banquet?

French chef Raymond Blanc has collaborated with the Royal Household to help create Tuesday's State Banquet menu.
Blanc, who was recently made an Ambassador for the King's Foundation, is cooking the first course and dessert in a partnership described by Buckingham Palace as being 'in the spirit of the Entente Cordiale'.
Around 160 guests are attending the glittering banquet in St George's Hall at Windsor Castle, which has not hosted a State Visit since 2014 when Irish President Michael D Higgins travelled to the UK.
The menu, which is written in French as is the custom for State Banquets, includes:
Selection of Pre-Dinner Canapes
A Selection of Tender Summer Vegetables from the Gardens of Le Manoir with Sage, Raw Tomato and Extra Virgin Olive Oil Dressing
Supreme of Rhug Estate Chicken with Norfolk Asparagus and Tarragon Cream Le Cassis Iced Blackcurrant Parfait on a Blackcurrant-soaked Sponge with Elderflower Jelly
Guests each have five glasses, and the wine list includes Domaine Evremond, Classic Cuvee, Edition I, NV; Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, Etienne Sauzet, 2022; Chateau Haut-Brion; 1er Grand Cru Classe Pessac-Leognan, 1996; Louis Roederer, Carte Blanche, NV. The English sparkling wine will be used for the toast.
Following dinner, guests will be served Taylor's 1977 Vintage Port and a 1948 Grande Champagne Cognac by Frapin & Co. The drinks were selected to reflect the years in which President Macron and the King were born.
A special cocktail has also been created for the occasion. The 'L'entente' combines British gin with lemon curd and French pastis. It is also garnished with dried French cornflowers and English roses.
It has taken almost a week to construct and lay the 50-metre table for Tuesday's banquet, which will be lit by candlelight once the evening light fades.
It is adorned with hand-picked and seasonal flowers from the gardens at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle, along with flowers and lavender from The Savill Garden in Windsor Great Park, which have been arranged in silver-gilt centrepieces taken from the Grand Service.
Guests will move to the Music Room for a performance by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales following the banquet.
Of the artists performing, flautist, Matthew Featherstone, is a British-French national and cellist, Raphael Lang, is British-American but was born and raised in Paris.

Starmer and Macron to meet at No 10 amid push for French help on small boats

The French president arrived on Tuesday for the first state visit by an EU head of state since Brexit. It comes as the UK has been pressing for tougher action from the French authorities on the beaches along the Channel coast. The Prime Minister hopes to strike a 'one in, one out' deal to send small boat migrants back to the continent, in exchange for the UK accepting asylum seekers in Europe who have a British link. Alongside Downing Street talks, Sir Keir and Mr Macron are also expected to attend a reception with UK and French businesses and an event at the British Museum on Wednesday. Their spouses, Brigitte Macron and Lady Victoria Starmer, will have tea and a tour of Downing Street together, followed by all four having lunch. While they are being hosted by the King at Windsor, the Macrons will lay flowers on the tomb of Queen Elizabeth II and see Fabuleu de Maucour, a horse the French president gave Elizabeth in 2022 to mark her Platinum Jubilee. In a speech to MPs and peers on Tuesday, Mr Macron promised to deliver on measures to cut the number of migrants crossing the English Channel, describing the issue as a 'burden' to both countries. He said France and the UK have a 'shared responsibility to address irregular migration with humanity, solidarity and fairness'. Decisions at a Franco-British summit on Thursday will respond to 'our aims for co-operation and tangible results on these major issues', Mr Macron added. The French denied a Telegraph report that Mr Macron blames the UK for the crisis. A senior Elysee source said: 'The French president looks forward to working with the Prime Minister constructively on this shared priority.' Last week, the total number of people crossing the Channel in small boats this year passed 20,000. The total now stands at more than 21,000, a record for this point in the year. Sir Keir and the French president are also expected to co-host a meeting of the 'coalition of the willing', the peacekeeping mission proposed to be deployed to Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire with Russia.

Kate Middleton seen in tiara for the first time in nearly 2 years

The sparkle is back at Windsor Castle. During an official appearance in Windsor, England, Catherine, Princess of Wales, wore a tiara for the first time since 2023. The 43-year-old was photographed on July 8 arriving at a state banquet at Windsor Castle with her husband, Prince William, by her side. For her appearance, the royal wore the classic Queen Mary's Lover's Knot Tiara, one of her more frequently worn tiaras, along with a dark red Givenchy by Sarah Burton gown (Burton was also the designer behind the princess' iconic wedding dress). The renowned piece of jewelry is identifiable by its multiple drop-shaped pearls. The banquet was held in honor of French President Emmanuel Macron and Brigitte Macron, first lady of France, who marked France's first state visit to the U.K. since Brexit. During his visit, President Macron is also expected to address parliament and visit Imperial College London. The banquet, hosted by King Charles III and Queen Camilla, is Kate's first tiara moment since sharing her cancer diagnosis in March 2024. Before her latest appearance, Kate wore a tiara at Buckingham Palace in December 2023, according to For the occasion, she wore the Lover's Knot. That same month marked her last public appearance before being diagnosed with cancer. Significance of the Lover's Knot Tiara Though closely associated with Kate, who has made the Lover's Knot Tiara one of the most recognizable pieces of jewelry to be worn by the British royal family, the tiara goes further back in history. According to previous reporting, the diadem was commissioned by Queen Mary around 1914 and was frequently worn by Princess Diana. The tiara was gifted to Diana for her 1981 wedding to Prince Charles by the late Queen Elizabeth II. Diana is said to have often complained about the weight of the tiara, attributing headaches to the weight of the piece.

Chicago's legendary Mr. Beef is popping up in L.A. for one weekend only

If you've been spending the last few weeks simultaneously thirsting over Jeremy Allen White (yes, chef!) and salivating over the on-screen food while watching The Bear season 4, this is the culinary pop-up for you: On Saturday, July 19 and Sunday, July 20, Chicago's own Mr. Beef —purveyors of the iconic Italian beef sandwiches that served as the inspo for the Berzatto family's Original Beef of Chicagoland" from the FX show—will be popping up in Los Angeles for a one-weekend-only takeover. Courtesy of cookware brand HexClad, the Windy City restaurant will be coming to cult-favorite L.A. sandwich shop Uncle Paulie's Deli (8053 W 3rd Street) to give Angelenos a taste of classic Chicago, with Mr. Beef's classic Italian beef sandwich (dipped in homemade au jus, loaded with tangy giardiniera and served on French bread) available for purchase from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. But note, those sandwiches are on a first-come, first-served basis, so arrive early to get ahead of the anticipated sell-out. Ensuring the authenticity of the world-famous sammie, Mr. Beef owner Chris Zucchero will be on site, as will Courtney Storer, a Chicago native and the culinary director for The Bear. Storer will also be serving her Coco's to Go-Go Homemade Italian Ice. Attendees will also be treated to a complimentary pickle cart sponsored by HexClad, and will be able to grab limited-edition merch of the Mr. Beef pop-up. Long before The Bear fans were crushing over fictional chef Carmy Berzatto, the very real Mr. Beef was serving up Italian beef sandwiches in Chicago's River North area, since all the way back in 1979. This is the second year in a row that the no-frills Chicago restaurant has brought its Windy City wonders to the West Coast, with a Mr. Beef pop-up having come to Uncle Paulie's last summer as well.
