Man jailed in Singapore for punching taxi driver, fined for separate food court scuffle
According to Channel News Asia (CNA), Silas Yu Ming'En lashed out at the 66-year-old cabbie after the latter overtook him at a traffic junction in Choa Chu Kang. He then assaulted a second victim months later in a separate incident at Bukit Panjang Plaza.
Yu pleaded guilty to two counts of voluntarily causing hurt, while an additional charge of using threatening behaviour was taken into consideration for sentencing.
According to the facts of the case, on April 9, 2024, Yu was driving along Choa Chu Kang North 5 when a taxi driver came to a stop behind him at a red light. After the light turned green, the taxi overtook Yu, having found him to be driving slowly.
When both vehicles stopped again at the junction of Choa Chu Kang North 5 and Choa Chu Kang Street 53, Yu got out of his car to confront the driver.
The cabbie rolled down his window after Yu knocked on it, prompting a heated exchange. Yu demanded that the driver step out of the vehicle. When he refused, Yu reached through the open window in an attempt to unbuckle his seatbelt and tried to force the door open.
He then punched the driver, causing a superficial abrasion on the man's right arm. The injury was later assessed at a polyclinic.
CNA also reported that on December 29, 2024, Yu was involved in another altercation — this time at a food court in Bukit Panjang Plaza.
While walking past a 30-year-old man, Yu said 'excuse me' in a manner the other man found rude. The man tapped Yu on the shoulder and said, 'Can you don't be so rude?' before walking off.
But Yu followed him, pushing him twice in the chest and causing him to hit his lower back against a pillar. Although the man attempted to walk away, Yu continued pursuing him until members of the public stepped in. The man suffered a bruise on his lower back.
Yu has since paid the food court victim S$160 in compensation. The taxi driver, however, could not provide a figure for his medical expenses.
In court, Yu, who was unrepresented, read a letter expressing remorse.
'I deeply regret any harm caused,' he said. 'I take full responsibility ... I will learn from this experience and not repeat such behaviour.'
For each count of voluntarily causing hurt, Yu could have been jailed for up to three years, fined up to S$5,000, or both.

SINGAPORE, Aug 1 — About 147,000 customer records were compromised in a recent data breach at car distributor Cycle & Carriage in Singapore, the company confirmed today. Responding to media queries, a Cycle & Carriage spokesperson said the firm detected unauthorised access to its customer relationship management system on July 14, where a threat actor downloaded certain customer details, according to CNA in a report published today. Cycle & Carriage has notified Singapore's Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC), lodged a police report, and begun informing affected customers in batches starting Wednesday. In an email to a customer seen by CNA, the company described the incident as a 'cybersecurity breach' and said it was still assessing the full extent of the damage. Apologising to those affected, the company said it had internal protocols and training in place to safeguard data but would continue to improve these measures in light of the breach. Customers were urged to stay alert for phishing scams and suspicious requests for personal information. The PDPC confirmed it is investigating the case, while the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore reminded organisations to strengthen cybersecurity defences to prevent data leaks and limit their impact.

6 men nabbed over Kota Bharu brawl
A video of the incident posted on Facebook shows a group of men getting out of two cars and assaulting several people at the scene. PETALING JAYA : Police have arrested six men to assist in investigations into a brawl that happened at Jalan Kebun Sultan in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, in May. Kelantan police chief Yusoff Mamat said the men, in their 20s and 30s, were arrested at about 3.30pm yesterday when they surrendered themselves at the Kota Bharu police headquarters. 'A four-day remand order has been obtained for all six of them, effective until Sunday. Investigations are ongoing,' he said in a statement. On May 29, Kota Bharu police chief Rosdi Daud said police were looking for the suspects involved in the brawl. A video of the fight was uploaded on Facebook and preliminary investigations found that the incident occurred on May 23, at about 4.30am. The one-minute-and-25-second video shows a group of men getting out of two cars and assaulting several people at the scene.

4 students detained over assault of classmate
A viral video captured the complainant being assaulted by two of the four students involved. KUALA LUMPUR : Four 13-year-old students have been detained by the police to assist in investigations into the assault of a classmate at a shopping centre in Kajang. Kajang police chief Naazron Abdul Yusof said the boys were detained following a report lodged by their classmate at 12.57pm yesterday. He said investigations found that the incident occurred at about 11am on July 30, when the complainant and his classmates went to the shopping centre to address a disagreement. 'During the incident, a viral video captured the complainant being assaulted by two students, while two others recorded the act on their mobile phones,' he said in a statement. Naazron added that the victim received medical treatment at a nearby hospital, where he was confirmed to have sustained minor facial injuries. The four students involved were arrested in Kajang at 8.35pm yesterday and remanded for two days until Aug 2 to assist in investigations. The case is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt, Section 506 of the same law for criminal intimidation, and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955. Naazron advised students to obey school rules and to avoid actions that could affect their future.
