Doc Talk In Cannes: Deadline Podcast Hosts American Pavilion Panel On Challenged State Of Documentary Industry

The latter film, directed by Eugene Jarecki, won a Special Jury Prize, marking the 10th anniversary of the L'Oeil d'or award, which goes to the top documentary at Cannes. Imago, directed by Chechen filmmaker Déni Oumar Pitsaev, took the 2025 L'Oeil d'or prize.

For the first time, Deadline's Doc Talk podcast traveled to Cannes to record interviews and to moderate a panel at the American Pavilion. Today's episode of the show is built around our AmPav discussion on the state of the documentary industry, which featured panelists Vanessa Hope, director of Invisible Nation; Joe Tufano, VP Distribution at Submarine Entertainment; and Catherine Quantschnigg, Noah Media Group's Producer, Sales.
Tufano explains how documentary filmmakers increasingly are moving to a territory-by-territory approach to sell their features in the absence of acquisitions for worldwide distribution. Hope tells us why she considered going the self-distribution route in the U.S. for her award-winning film that explores Taiwan as it contends with almost daily threats from mainland China. And Quantschnigg reveals how the distribution landscape has changed dramatically in only a few years since Netflix acquired Noah Media Group's acclaimed film 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.

At the June 9 'F1' premiere in Mexico City, star Brad Pitt spoke with E! News about potentially making a film with fellow box office champ Tom Cruise, an old buddy of Pitt. 'He's sweet,' the 'Ocean's 11' actor said. 'Yeah, we did have our go-cart days back in the '90s,' admitting that Cruise was the superior racer then. Pitt does have stipulations on what would be expected to him if he was ever to appear alongside the ambitious 'Mission: Impossible' stunt performer. No matter his stuntman bonafides, 'F1' director Joseph Kosinski, who also directed Cruise in 'Top Gun Maverick,' said that Cruise was not considered to play Pitt's role in the Formula One racing drama.'Tom always pushes it to the limit, but at the same time is super capable and very skilled. They both have the natural talent for driving. But, yeah, I could see Tom maybe scaring us a little bit more,' Kosinski told GQ. Pitt's new movie was first screened for an audience of real Formula One drivers in May ahead of the Monaco Gand Prix. Racer Lando Norris — who also appears in the movie — praised the 'inspirational story,' adding that 'it had a lot of different meanings behind it all. But a cool storyline and a lot of inspiration for young people coming into it.' 'It's going to make people want to watch F1, which is really the goal of it,' driver Oliver Bearman said. 'The onboard shots and the work that they did was actually quite incredible — it was impressive to see the technology that they can use.' Pitt said that, like his 'F1' character, he had precise rituals when preparing for each day of shooting. 'My OCD… before getting in the car, I always have to get in on the left side. I have to put my left shoe on first. I have to put my left glove on first. My belt — the guys knew we had to do left first [before] right. If they didn't we'd have to start over,' he explained. 'F1' hits IMAX theaters on June 25, with its wide release following two days later on June 27. Tom Cruise Celebrates ‘Days of Thunder' as ‘F1' Director Teases Possible Crossover Sequel
Tom Cruise is embracing the need for speed… but not of the 'Top Gun' variety. On X June 27, Cruise wrote a congratulatory message to producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who not only is the man behind this weekend's box office hit 'F1,' but also the Cruise-starring NASCAR film 'Days of Thunder' — released in theaters 35 years to the day of the new Brad Pitt-led Formula One action drama. 'I always love the fun and adrenaline of a racing film,' Cruise wrote. 'Today marks two racing milestones for my friend Jerry Bruckheimer, the release of 'F1' and the 35 year anniversary to the day of our collaboration with the great Tony Scott on 'Days of Thunder.'' The comparisons between Cruise and Pitt's action prowess was also made earlier this month at the 'F1' premiere, when Pitt responded to the suggestion that he star alongside his fellow box office champ in a 'Mission: Impossible'-style thriller. The pair have known one another for decades, and racing has helped define their friendship since the beginning — albeit in not quite as high stakes a venue. 'He's sweet,' Pitt said of Cruise. Even before that, the project had been through several potential incarnations, with Pitt rumored to be on the casting list as early as 2009. In the end, neither would end up starring in the movie, and 'Go Like Hell' was a title that eventually was scrapped, too. It instead became 'Ford v. Ferrari,' starred Christian Bale and Matt Damon, netted four Oscar nominations (including Best Picture), and raked in over $225 million at the box office. Brad Pitt Says Tom Cruise Dropped Out of ‘Ford v. Ferrari' When He Realized He ‘Would Not Be Driving That Much'
With an 'F1' sequel inevitable after its blockbuster opening for Apple, rumors are swirling that the film may race into theaters with not just one but two of Hollywood's biggest stars. Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise have been frequently mentioned in the same sentence over the last month — and it has been over 30 years since the pair appeared onscreen together in 'Interview with a Vampire.' Pitt and Cruise almost starred in 'Ford v. Ferrari,' actually — but Cruise dropped out when, according to Pitt, he found out he would not be spending very much time behind the wheel. 'Tom and I, for a while there, were on 'Ford v Ferrari' with Joe [to direct]. This was about 10 years before the guys who actually made it – and made it a great movie,' Pitt told The National. 'What it came down to is that we both wanted to drive, and [Tom] wanted to play Shelby, and I wanted to play Ken Miles. And when Tom realized that Carroll Shelby would not be driving much in the movie, it didn't come through. 'Well, right now, it'd be Cole Trickle, who was [Cruise's] 'Days of Thunder' character, we find out that he and [Brad Pitt's] Sonny Hayes have a past. They were rivals at some point, maybe crossed paths,' Kosinski said, adding, 'Who wouldn't pay to see those two go head-to-head on the track?' In discussing what would need to be included in the sequel, Pitt's demands were clear. 'I would want to drive again, selfishly speaking… F1 is still the focus. It needs to be on Joshua Pierce — Damson Idris's character – and the rest of the team fighting for a championship. Where does Sonny fit in? I'm not sure. Sonny's probably out on the Bonneville Salt Flats, setting speed records or something like that. So I'm not sure beyond that, just yet,' Pitt said. 'F1' has become an unqualified box office hit, grossing $161 million in just its first week of release. With the film likely to add much more to its total over the long Independence Day weekend, it has already become the first major theatrical success for Apple's fledgling film studio. Pitt made it clear that he's not taking the movie's unique appeal for granted. 'The greatest pleasure – the thing that puts a smile on my face — is seeing families, from kids to grandparents, big groups of friends all going together and taking photos in front of the poster or the car. It's a rarity for film to reach that level of reaction, especially in this day and time. I think the value of entertainment can sometimes be greater than the piece itself. And I think that's happening here,' Pitt said.
