Action taken as shoplifting 'increases' in Stroud town centre

Yahoo22-03-2025
A COLLABORATION between police and partner agencies has been 'crucial' in the fight against shoplifting in the town centre.
Last week police said they were out supporting retailers in Stroud town centre following a recent scourge of shoplifting.
Officers say they have had 'great success' in tackling the issue over the last few months following various incidents.
These include when a large amount of stock was returned to a retailer - with arrests made - after several huge trolley dash thefts.
And, together with Stroud Safe, more has been done to identify, prevent and investigate shoplifting offences.
Stroud mayor Tony Davey said: "Crime against business has grown across the country in recent years with Stroud also experiencing this growth in crime.
"The Stroud Safe network in town is a vital tool in fighting back crime against business, and a valuable way to help our Neighbourhood Policing Team and Response Team react quickly and decisively."
Steve Lindsay, from Gloucester City Safe, said: "A targeted policing initiative in Stroud aimed at combating rising retail crime rates has led to a significant increase in successful outcomes, highlighting the effectiveness of a collaborative approach to retail crime, working with Stroud Safe and businesses.
"With retail crime rates climbing nationally and hitting the headlines, Stroud Police have made tackling this issue a priority by way of improving investigations, the area has been able to better identify, prevent, and investigate shoplifting offences.
"A key part of this operation has been the introduction of a dedicated retail crime officer, who has played a crucial role in focusing resources and monitoring cases daily.
"The officer's work has been instrumental in driving a coordinated response to retail crime, ensuring that every possible avenue is explored to address offenders, encourage behavioural change, and safeguard retailers.
"Additionally, the local Neighbourhood Policing team has provided vital support, engaging with retailers to ensure swift evidence capture and the prompt progression of cases.
"This has led to a range of successful outcomes, including charges, custodial sentences, civil injunctions/Criminal Behaviour Orders, and out-of-court disposals, all aimed at managing offenders and curbing repeat incidents.
"The scheme has been particularly effective in tackling repeat and prolific offenders, who cause the greatest harm to businesses.
"Recognising the financial and personal toll that shoplifting takes on business owners, employees, and the wider local community, Stroud Police have focused efforts on both preventing and addressing these crimes in a manner that ensures lasting impact.
"Since the scheme's launch in November 2024, the initiative has seen dramatic improvements in its outcomes.
"The average success rate for shoplifting offences has risen from just 19 per cent in the previous nine months to 52 per cent, marking a significant step forward in the fight against retail crime.
"This success could not have been achieved without the active support and collaboration of businesses and community partners, whose involvement has been vital to the scheme's overall effectiveness.
"Stroud Police remain committed to tackling retail crime through ongoing cooperation and an unwavering focus on protecting both retailers and the community."

Future of important market near Stroud secured

THE FUTURE of an important market near Stroud has been secured. The LoveNailsworth Business Group have been successful in their bid to keep the monthly market in Nailsworth running, following the end of the contract of the previous operators. The first market is scheduled to run on Saturday, August 9 at 10am. Tony Davey, Interim Chairman of the LoveNailsworth group said: 'We are delighted that our market working group won the bid to run this important market in Nailsworth, securing its future. "As with any change of custodian, there will be changes, but we have invested significant time and effort into planning improvements that will have a positive and holistic impact on the town, and should improve the market experience for the traders and customers alike, whilst also considering the needs of the bricks-and-mortar businesses in the town for whom we hope to bring more trade. "Within LoveNailsworth we have ambitious plans to step up the marketing of the town as a destination, with the market being an important part of the overall offering. "We have good public transport links, a cycle track almost to our door, and a wealth of wonderful shops explore and cafes to enjoy. We want to get that message out so more people discover and love Nailsworth as we do.' The market will move to the second Saturday in the month, with a plan not just to run the monthly market but other markets for special events. The market will start at 10am and conclude at 2pm. These new timings reflect statutory requirements on keeping chilled food, plus can better facilitate stays in town for lunchtimes and more general browsing. Those who wish to quickly visit town businesses ahead of the market opening will be able to do so. Liz Townley, market manager and working group lead, said: 'We are excited to be the new operators of this beloved market within such a prominent town position. "We hope that many of the existing traders will want to continue serving the customers of Nailsworth, and we have capacity to bring some new faces into the mix too. "A diversity of traders that do not mirror in-town offerings is at the heart of our selection process, along with hosting voluntary organisations to give them a much-needed platform to raise awareness of their work in our communities.' Nailsworth mayor Peter Bodkin said: 'Nailsworth Town Council is delighted to have been able to secure the future of the Mortimer Garden Market. "The Council is confident that LoveNailsworth Business Group are well placed to establish a vibrant market in the town quickly and for it to evolve alongside existing businesses as a major draw for residents and visitors alike."

Driver stopped by police for ‘deadly' action while driving in Bolton

A driver was stopped by officers in Great Lever for allegedly driving while using a mobile phone behind the wheel last week. Officers were on patrol in Great Lever when they reportedly spotted the driver "brazenly" using the mobile device behind the wheel. The driver was ordered to stop by officers and reported for the offence. READ MORE: A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: 'Using a handheld mobile phone while driving is not just illegal – it's deadly. "A moment's distraction can lead to life-changing or fatal collisions. No text, no call, no notification is worth a life. 'It's illegal to use a handheld mobile device while driving – even if you're stopped at traffic lights or in a queue. "Offenders face a £200 fine and six penalty points. New drivers (within two years of passing) could lose their licence entirely. 'If a crash occurs while using a phone, you could face a prison sentence for dangerous or careless driving. 'Our message is clear: If you're behind the wheel, put the phone away. Your life – and the lives of others – depend on it.' Earlier this year, 22 vehicles were stopped in Great Lever by the Neighbourhood Policing Team on to catch those committing traffic offences on roads in the area. The operation comes in response to concerns from residents around the Lever Street, High Street and Bridgeman Street areas. Officers pulled over just under two dozen vehicles in total using these roads. Of these, 11 traffic offence reports were issued to drivers. These include for driving in excess of the speed limit, using a mobile phone whilst driving, contravening a red light and using a vehicle with defective tyres.
