Some fans question US readiness for 2026 World Cup after Club World Cup experience

Al Arabiya2 days ago
Lifelong soccer fan Victor Dumois expressed concern about the US co-hosting the 2026 World Cup after attending a recent Club World Cup match in Miami. 'I think after the Copa America a weird phenomenon has occurred here,' said Dumois, who is from Spain. 'There's people that don't like the World Cup being in the United States.'
The Copa America championship game last year in Miami was a security nightmare, with overheated and ticketless fans breaking down the barriers at Hard Rock Stadium to get inside. Eventually, the game was played, although some paying customers never were able to get to their seats because they were occupied. Some cited the debacle as one example of how unprepared the US is to host soccer's biggest tournament.
Fast-forward to this summer and the 32-team Club World Cup hosted solely in the US. Dumois said security was tight this time around–almost to a fault. 'In Spain it is different; you can just have an Uber or taxi take you right up to the stadium,' Dumois said, sharing his thoughts on the Round 16 match between Real Madrid and Juventus. 'Here in Miami they have to leave you outside and far away. There's so many layers of security it's too much.'
The Club World Cup, which is entering the quarterfinals this weekend, has served as a tune-up for the US, which along with Canada and Mexico will host the 2026 World Cup in cities like Miami, Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Seattle. So far, the club tournament has not been well-attended except for a handful of matches. A Round of 16 knockout match at Charlotte's 75,000-seat Bank of America Stadium between Fluminense and Inter Milan drew just 20,030 fans. Stadium officials allowed fans who'd purchased upper deck tickets to move down to the lower bowl. Even then, lower bowl looked half full. Empty seats have been a common sight across the country. There are a variety of reasons why. First, the club tournament simply isn't as popular as the World Cup, where players are competing for their countries rather than a club team. The costs–both for games and travel–have also kept some away. And for some there have been lingering concerns of potential US Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids at matches amid President Donald Trump's crackdown on illegal immigration.
The weather hasn't helped either. Benjamin Cabral lives in Boston, but his family is from Azores, an autonomous region of Portugal. He said if FIFA hopes to grow the game in America, a scheduling change is necessary. Due to soccer's popularity in Europe, many club matches have been played in the middle of the day so fans overseas can watch games on television or livestream in real time at night. The downside is players have been forced to play with temperatures above 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 Celsius) while a major heat wave gripped the States. 'If they're trying to grow their game in the US, they need to make the games later,' Cabral said. 'It's too hot out here for the players.'
It hasn't been easy on fans either. 'There's no roof, no screens, not much,' said Carlos Olguin, who made the trek from Mexico to Charlotte to watch Pachuca play Real Madrid. Next year's World Cup will be played during a similar time frame, beginning in mid-June and concluding in mid-July. Excitement surrounding the current event also remains a concern. 'The other thing in the city is that it should be more prepared for the event because there are people who don't even know there's an event, and so you go to a restaurant with the idea that there are flags, fans, more football things, and there's nothing,' Olguin added of the Club World Cup. 'The city should be more prepared for the event because there are people who don't even know there's an event.'
As for the venues, spectators attending Club World Cup matches offered differing reviews of American stadiums and host cities leading up to the country hosting the World Cup for the first since 1994. 'I'll be honest, the US is not ready to host the World Cup,' said Jeremy Zuniga from South Carolina. 'There's too many people coming from South America, Europe, everybody.'
Others like Rogerio Bajos from Peru feel differently. 'I think it's been good; we haven't had any problems,' said Bajos, who also attended a CWC game in Miami. 'The parking is no problem, the security has been good. Overall a stupendous spectacle.'
Humberto Contasta from Miami said the Club World Cup should help the American co-hosts iron out some issues before next summer.
Daniel Marques, who made the trek from Portugal to Charlotte for the sole purpose of watching Benfica battle Chelsea in a group play match, said he was impressed overall with how the tournament was run.
Guilherme Altoe agreed. Altoe, who grew up watching World Cup matches in Brazil before moving to the US nearly a decade ago, said he thinks the US will put on a good event next summer. 'I think the United States has everything, all the infrastructure to host a World Cup,' he said. 'So we are excited to have them see all the fans from different places and have family come around, and it will be a great time.'

Athletics Cruise Past Giants 11-2 With Six Scoreless Innings From Sears

JP Sears pitched six scoreless innings. Nick Kurtz and Denzel Clarke hit home runs, and the Athletics cruised past the San Francisco Giants 11–2 on Friday night. Jacob Wilson and Brent Rooker both drove in two of six early runs off Justin Verlander as the Athletics took a 6–0 lead after three innings. Sears (7–7) allowed three hits and two walks, striking out six. Rookie Jack Perkins gave up two runs – one earned – in three innings for his second save in his third appearance. Verlander (0–6) was tagged for six runs on seven hits in three innings but fanned five. After Lawrence Butler singled in the first and scored on Rooker's single, the Athletics used four doubles in the second to score four times. Tyler Soderstrom and Max Muncy had two straight leading off for the first run. Wilson followed with a two-out, two-run double before scoring on a double by Rooker for a 5–0 lead. Zack Gelof – on the injured list since spring training – hit a sacrifice fly in the third. The game was delayed in the middle of the sixth when home plate umpire Andy Fletcher left after taking an earlier foul tip off his mask. Tripp Gibson finished behind the plate. Clarke tripled when play resumed and scored on Butler's single. Two outs later, rookie Kurtz hit his 13th home run for a 9–0 lead. Clarke's two-run shot in the seventh capped the A's scoring. Brett Wisely homered in the eighth, and the Giants got an unearned run in the ninth. Key moment: Wilson's two-out double to left in the four-run second came on a 0–2 pitch from Verlander. Key stat: Verlander is 262–152 in his career but winless in his first 14 starts with the Giants. He hasn't won since his final start for the Astros last season, beating the Guardians 4–3 on September 28.

Paintsil Scores 2 Goals, Nascimento Adds 1 Goal, Galaxy Beat Whitecaps 3-0

Joseph Paintsil had two goals, Matheus Nascimento also scored a goal, and the LA Galaxy beat the Vancouver Whitecaps 3–0 on Friday night to snap a three-game winless streak. LA (2–13–6), the defending MLS Cup champion, won for the first time since it beat Real Salt Lake 2–0 on May 31 to snap a 16-game winless streak to open the season. The Galaxy went into the game with 13 points, the fewest in all of MLS. The Whitecaps (11–4–5) have lost three of their last four. Vancouver is second in the Western Conference with 38 points, behind San Diego (39). Edwin Cerrillo flicked a shot from 30 yards out that was deflected by goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka, and Nascimento put away the rebound with a first-touch finish to open the scoring in the second minute. Paintsil made it 2–0 in the 60th. Gabriel Pec played a long, arcing ball to the top of the penalty box where Marco Reus tapped a first-touch pass to a wide-open Paintsil, who calmly flicked a shot inside the back post from the left side of the area. Paintsil converted from the penalty spot in the 77th minute for his first career multi-goal game. The 27-year-old forward has three goals and one assist this season after he finished with 10 goals and 10 assists last season–his first in MLS. Takaoka had five saves for Vancouver. Jayden Nelson was shown a yellow card in the 55th minute and another in stoppage time as the Whitecaps played a man down for the final few minutes. Novak Micovic had a save for LA. The Galaxy had 55 percent possession and outshot Vancouver 12–6, 8–1 on target. The Whitecaps beat the Galaxy 2–1 at home on March 2.

Vinnie Pasquantino has 2 HRs, career-high 6 RBIs to lift Royals over Diamondbacks 9-3

Vinnie Pasquantino homered twice and drove in a career-high six runs. Bobby Witt Jr. added three hits and the Kansas City Royals beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 9–3 on Friday night. The Royals have won three of their past four games. The D-backs have dropped three straight. Pasquantino gave the Royals a 3–0 lead in the first with a three-run shot into the right field seats off left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez. The first baseman took Rodriguez deep again in the fourth, this time mashing the ball 401 feet over the right-center wall for a two-run homer and an 8–2 lead. It was Pasquantino's second career multi-homer game. Mark Canha added a solo homer in the fifth. Kansas City lefty Kris Bubic (7–6) gave up three runs on seven hits and three walks over seven innings. He struck out six. Rodriguez (3–5) gave up nine runs – eight earned – over 4 1/3 innings and now has a 5.78 ERA. He struck out seven but gave up 12 hits, including three homers. Arizona cut Kansas City's lead to 3–2 in the bottom of the first on Eugenio Suarez's sacrifice fly and Josh Naylor's RBI single. But the Royals came right back with three runs in the second to take a 6–2 lead. Suarez added a solo homer in the sixth – his 28th of the season. Rodriguez had two strikes on leadoff hitter Jonathan India in the first inning before hitting him with a pitch. Witt followed with a single and Pasquantino homered, foreshadowing a rough night for the D-backs. Rodriguez has a 6–9 record with a 5.49 ERA over 25 starts since signing with the D-backs on an $80 million, four-year deal in December 2023. The series continues Saturday when the Royals send RHP Michael Wacha (4–8, 3.62 ERA) to the mound. The D-backs counter with RHP Ryne Nelson (4–2, 3.61).
