Cops probe ‘flogging' of Prime Minister effigy during Turun Anwar rally

PETALING JAYA: Police are probing the reported flogging of an effigy resembling Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim near Masjid Negara during the Turun Anwar rally last Saturday. Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Usuf Jan Mohamad said the report on the incident was one of four received in relation to the rally at Dataran Merdeka, Bernama reported. He said the case had been referred to the classified crime investigation unit in Bukit Aman for investigation under Section 41 of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 504 of the Penal Code, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. Speaking at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today, he said the other three reports were related to the use of drones. 'The three other reports related to drones have been forwarded to the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia for further action,' he said, adding that any misconduct by rally participants would be investigated by the police. About 18,000 people took part in the rally, according to police estimates, although the organisers, PAS Youth, claimed that more than 200,000 participants were present. Protesters had called for Anwar to step down as prime minister over the rising cost of living, among others. At an anti-corruption rally in Sabah last month, organised by several Universiti Malaysia Sabah students, protesters burned a caricature of the prime minister. The Gempur Rasuah Sabah 2.0 protest saw more than 100 people call for action over the Sabah water department scandal. Earlier today, Sinar Harian quoted Anwar as saying that Muhyiddin had questioned the government for burdening foreigners when they had also made significant contributions to the country. The prime minister said the government had decided on targeted subsidies for electricity and RON95 petrol so that they could continue helping Malaysians while reducing the nation's fiscal deficit.

Malaysia, Philippines to strengthen strategic cooperation for Asean's future, says Anwar
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and the Philippines are committed to strengthening strategic cooperation to ensure a more peaceful and united future for Asean, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. In a Facebook post, Anwar said the commitment was among the matters discussed during a phone conversation with Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr on Wednesday (Aug 6). "The discussion also touched on peace and harmony in international waters and border areas, which are our shared priorities for regional stability," he said. Anwar said he also shared positive developments regarding the border negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia, which are expected to be finalised this Thursday through the consensus of the two countries' defence ministers during the Extraordinary General Border Committee (GBC) meeting here. The Prime Minister said the development marked another step forward in realising Asean's aspirations of becoming a peaceful, stable and prosperous region. Cambodian Defence Minister General Tea Seiha and acting Thai Defence Minister General Natthaphon Narkphanit, along with armed forces chiefs and government representatives of both countries, are expected to attend the GBC meeting. Thailand and Cambodia had agreed to implement a ceasefire effective midnight on July 28 following a special meeting chaired by Anwar at the Seri Perdana Complex in Putrajaya. – Bernama

Cops nab foreigner suspected of molesting girl in Rawang
KUALA LUMPUR: A foreign man who is suspected of molesting a teenage girl in Bukit Sentosa, Rawang recently has been arrested by the police. Hulu Selangor district police chief Supt Ibrahim Husin said the man was arrested after the police received a report from the victim around 3pm on Sunday. "The suspect, 21, was arrested by the Hulu Selangor district police headquarters criminal investigation division thanks to a public tipoff," he said in a statement on Tuesday (Aug 5), adding that the suspect did not have a prior criminal record and tested negative for drugs. The suspect has been remanded for three days from Tuesday till Aug 7 for further investigation under Section 15(a)(1) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, he added. – Bernama
