SINGAPORE — Canada's Summer McIntosh took the bronze medal in the 800-metre freestyle at the world swim championship in a three-way duel to the finish.
The Toronto teenager, Olympic champion Katie Ledecky of the United States and Lani Pallister of the Australia battled from start to finish with Ledecky claiming her seventh world title in the distance.
McIntosh seeking a fourth straight gold medal in Singapore ran second to the American star before making her move on the final turn for a brief lead.
But Ledecky surged and delivered the knockout punch over the final 50 metres with Pallister closing fast behind her.
Ledecky finished in eight minutes, 5.62 seconds with Pallister less than four-tenths of a second behind. McIntosh touched the wall 1.67 seconds after Ledecky.
Canada has now won seven medals at the world aquatics championships — six in swimming and one in diving.

Wild dominate everywhere but on scoreboard, dropping 2-1 decision to AFC Toronto at McMahon

The Calgary Wild got the performance they wanted Saturday afternoon, but not the result, dropping a 2-1 decision to AFC Toronto. Emma Regan's goal in the 18th minute of the first half stood up as the winner for league-leading AFC Toronto at McMahon Stadium, where the match paused for 30 minutes in the second half due to lightning in the area. Meikayla Moore scored in the eighth minute to give the Calgary Wild a 1-0 lead, but Kaylee Hunter tied the match four minutes later. Calgary had possession 55 per cent of the time during the match and outshot the visitors 14-9 (5-4 on-target), to no avail. 'It was one of our strongest overall performances of the season,' said head coach Lydia Bedford, in a media release. 'The energy was good today, the players worked really hard for each other. Obviously, we scored first and you have to capitalize on that momentum but to then concede two pretty quickly afterwards is tough, but I can't praise the team enough for what they put in from that moment onwards because I think we did everything other than score today.' The game was paused in the 54th minute due to thunderstorms for 45 minutes. It was the Wild's third straight 2-1 loss to AFC Toronto this season. Next up for the Wild is a Saturday matchup against Rapid FC in Ottawa. With files from The Canadian Press
