Pair banned from owning dogs after pets found in 'filthy and dangerous' home
Anthony and Liz Conway, from Alexandria, have been disqualified from owning or keeping dogs for three years after causing three dogs 'significant mental and physical suffering'.
The Scottish SPCA received a complaint from one of the couple's neighbours regarding a smell coming from the property.
'The complaint stated that there were possibly four dogs within the property, that one of the dogs had died and that the remaining dogs were never taken out of the property for exercise,' the SSPCA inspector said.
Officers from the charity attended the property and were met by Anthony Conway, who said he was looking after the dogs at the property on behalf of their owner Liz-Anne Conway.
Inside the property were three dogs living in 'filthy, hazardous and dangerous living conditions'. SSPCA Anthony and Liz Conway, from Alexandria, have been disqualified from owning or keeping dogs for three years.
The dogs included a six-year-old female black French bulldog type dog called Raven as well as two one-year-old fawn cross French Bulldog/Bichon Frise type dogs – a male called Blitz and a female called Gypsy.
'On entering, there was a strong smell of urine and faeces. Opening the door to the kitchen three dogs ran out into the hallway. The kitchen floor was covered in dog urine and faeces,' they said.
Officers said there was no clean space available for the dogs to stand or line down.
'A small dog cage contained a soiled blanket, and a plastic dog bed was being used to store a large bag of dog food. An empty water bowl sat on the floor. The kitchen was filled with an overpowering odour,' they added.
Following the inspector, officers removed the dogs from property, and transported them to an SSPCA animal rescue centre for further treatment.
A SSPCA vet found Raven to be suffering with inflamed and painful ears as well as being slightly underweight, and demonstrating a degree of pain in her back.
The vet said Raven had endured 'significant pain and suffering' for at least two months due to her owners' failure to seek veterinary treatment.
They added that Raven's condition would have been apparent to any reasonable person in the early stages of the disease.
Blitz was found to be slightly underweight and had superficial scrapes on his nose and paw.
Gypsy was found to have some scabbing on her head and superficial abrasions on the pads of her left hind paw.
Additionally, the vet said confining the dogs to the kitchen, surrounded by accumulated faeces and without access to appropriate food, water, resting areas, or toileting opportunities, would have resulted in 'significant physical and psychological suffering' over a period of at least two weeks.
SSPCA said suffering endured by all three dogs was 'unnecessary and avoidable'.
Anthony Conway pled guilty to not providing their dog, Raven, with necessary veterinary treatment causing pain and unnecessary suffering over at least a two-month period.
Liz Conway pled guilty to failing to provide a suitable living environment.
Both were sentenced at Dumbarton Sheriff Court on Monday, May 12, and also received a £250 fine with £20 victim surcharge.
A spokesperson for the SSPCA said the charity was 'pleased' with the sentencing saying it recognised the severity of the pet's neglect.
'The suffering endured by all three dogs was both unnecessary and avoidable,' they said.
'Their basic needs -for a consistent diet, clean water, and, in Raven's case, timely veterinary care – were not met.'

The 55-year-old said: "I was sent the clip and I was absolutely horrified watching it. "She was so heavy handed with my dog, Buddy, when she didn't need to be at all. " Buddy is the most loving and affectionate dog with the sweetest nature - he's obedient and does most things you say. "You put your dog into the trust of someone else because you think they'll take good care of them. "It makes me feel sick that someone could handle Buddy like this when he is so gentle." On Facebook, Sutherland is the admin of a private pet group called 'Crazy Dog Crew'. Mark handed Buddy over to Sutherland for two weeks after his other dog came into season. He claims that she is known in the area for doing dog walks and boarding and he trusted her through word of mouth. But Mark said she offered to look after Buddy for free. He continued: "She took Buddy as a favour for me and no money was exchanged but it obviously raises concern if this is how she is treating animals. "Whether or not she takes money from others for it, I do not know, but I'm not happy with how she treated Buddy and my wife was crying after watching the clip. "She didn't need to manhandle him like that and she knows it. He would have just followed her to wherever she was going. She didn't need to use such force." Aberdeenshire Council confirmed that the property in Monymusk does not hold an animal boarding license. Both the local authority and SSPCA have confirmed investigations into the incident. A spokesperson for SSPCA said: "I can confirm that this has been reported to the SSPCA and is being investigated. "We are not able to provide any further comment into ongoing investigations." Animal Health Officers attended the property and spoke with the owner. "We can confirm that the premises does not hold an animal boarding license with Aberdeenshire Council. Investigations in respect of the incident continue."

Woman shocked to discover dead snake in road outside Scots train station

Michelle Jamieson discovered the small reptile lying on the road – apparently having been run over – outside Falkirk High station on Thursday night. She had been picking her friend and her friend's son from the station at around 9.05pm when she made the grim discovery. Michelle said: 'I parked at the little roundabout outside Falkirk High Station and ran over to get them and their cases. 'My friend's son said 'what the heck is that?'. I quickly looked and said it looked like one of those toy snakes. 'The poor wee thing had its insides coming out. I gently touched it with my foot and it was still soft.' Unsure what to do, Michelle then took to a local community Facebook page for advice, where users there speculated that it could have been a small Western Hognose snake – a non-native species from North America. Some speculated that it was most likely an escaped pet snake. Michelle added: 'I didn't have anything in the car to lift it with, but I thought if I put it on a local community page, people might have some information on it. 'I've been back up this morning as I've thought about the wee soul all night. Unfortunately it was away.' One social media user said: 'I would have dropped dead on the spot!' Another added: 'That is a Western Hognose. I love these wee guys. Absolutely gutted to see this.' The snake's origin or its owner remains unknown. The SSPCA has been contacted.

AOC and fiancé Riley Roberts on high alert and tighten security at NYC home after death threats following Pro-Palestine fake blood attack

The visibly coordinated security check by AOC's red-haired fiancé came just hours after her Bronx campaign headquarters was defaced with red paint in a disturbing act of vandalism by pro-Palestinian activists. During the weekend, she posted on X: 'Marjorie Taylor Greene's amendment does nothing to cut off offensive aid to Israel nor end the flow of US munitions being used in Gaza. 'Of course I voted against it. 'What it does do is cut off defensive Iron Dome capacities while allowing the actual bombs killing Palestinians to continue. 'I have long stated that I do not believe that adding to the death count of innocent victims to this war is constructive to its end. 'That is a simple and clear difference of opinion that has long been established. 'I remain focused on cutting the flow of US munitions that are being used to perpetuate the genocide in Gaza.' In another X post addressing the criticism on Monday, she included screenshots of her voting against the spending bill, adding: 'If you're saying I voted for military funding, you are lying. Receipts attached. 'Drag me for my positions all you want, but lying about them doesn't make you part of the 'left.'
