Qirat causes enormous shock in Sussex Stakes at Goodwood

RTÉ News19 hours ago
Field Of Gold's pacemaker Qirat caused an almighty shock with a 150-1 victory in the Visit Qatar Sussex Stakes at Goodwood.
John and Thady Gosden's Field Of Gold was a 1-3 shot to follow in the hoofprints of his sire Kingman by adding this prestigious Group One contest to his previous top-level victories in the Irish 2,000 Guineas and the St James's Palace Stakes.
The Ralph Beckett-trained Qirat, who was last seen finishing 27th of 30 runners in the Royal Hunt Cup, was supplemented for the race last week at a cost of £70,000 in a bid to ensure the red-hot favourite had a strong gallop to aim at.
But the race did not go to script, with Qirat keeping up the gallop to emerge triumphant under Richard Kingscote, despite the best efforts of Rosallion, who was a neck adrift at the line.
Field Of Gold, meanwhile, had to settle for a laboured fourth, with Henri Matisse third.
Ger Lyons has his sights on America after Lady Iman made a successful Goodwood raid to regain the winning thread in the HKJC World Pool Molecomb Stakes.
The daughter of Starman had dazzled in her opening three outings but lost her unbeaten record to Aidan O'Brien's Beautify at the Curragh in the Airlie Stud Stakes.
Reverting to five furlongs for her first taste of action on British soil, she was sent off the 11-8 favourite and Ryan Moore kept things simple, travelling smoothly in the slipstream of the early leaders before taking over in the final furlong where she was not for catching.
Tim Easterby's consistent Argentine Tango gave chase in vain for an honourable second, with Kevin Ryan's early pacesetter Dickensian in third.
Stable companions Saqqara Sands and Tabiti shared the honours after the judge announced a dead-heat following a thrilling renewal of the HKJC World Pool Oak Tree Stakes.
Tabiti was among the leading contenders for the Group Three contest at 9-2 and with blinkers applied for a second time, the three-year-old set out to make all the running in the hands of Ryan Moore.
Saqqara Sands, a much bigger price at 16-1 under Rossa Ryan, emerged from the pack as the biggest threat inside the final furlong and while she briefly managed to poke her head in front, Tabiti battled back and the Ralph Beckett-trained pair passed the post as one.

Cat Deeley's heartbreaking regret over lavish wedding to Patrick Kielty

Cat Deeley courageously revealed a devastating moment from before her extravagant wedding to Patrick Kielty. The television hosts confirmed their split earlier this week following over 10 years of marriage. This Morning's Cat, 48, and Irish broadcaster Patrick, 54, first crossed paths whilst co-presenting BBC Fame Academy in 2002. The pair fronted two series of the programme together. The couple wed in Rome during September 2012, merely nine months after beginning their romance. They were joined by 100 guests at an intimate ceremony conducted by Belfast-based priest Father Gary Donegan. Cat had previously disclosed that her grandfather was unable to attend the overseas nuptials due to being too poorly to make the journey. The former pair filmed the proceedings for him, yet tragically he passed away before viewing the footage, reports the Mirror. The star revealed this anguish when questioned about her "biggest regret" by Grazia magazine in 2017. She responded: "He died before he saw it. The good thing is we love it and, after two glasses of wine, Patrick and I put it on like a pair of losers." Patrick Kielty and Cat Deeley met in 2002 (Image: PA) Supporters of the duo were left shocked when wedding details emerged. Particularly since Patrick had refuted engagement rumours just months prior to their vows. Cat even picked out her wedding dress before the couple were planning to walk down the aisle. Speaking on Lorraine in 2021, she said: "Mine [wedding dress] is in the cupboard somewhere but I'd actually already got my dress before... It wasn't because I was feeling lucky, I promise! It was a couture dress from Alexander McQueen - a shift white dress. "It was so beautiful that I just couldn't not buy it and I hadn't even met Paddy at that stage. I literally put it in my cupboard and I was like I'll wear it to something... I'll wear it to some awards. There you go." Parents to two children, Cat and Patrick have recently announced their split, stating: "We have taken the decision to end our marriage and are now separated. There is no other party involved." There will be no further comment." Cat rose to fame while presenting SM:TV Live alongside Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly. While she met Patrick in 2002 on Fame Academy, the pair didn't become romantically involved for almost a decade. Patrick, an RTE presenter, credits a grand romantic gesture for winning Cat's heart, as he shared with The Daily Mail: "Unless someone was stupid enough to get on a plane, nothing would have happened. "Cat was in LA and I was in Northern Ireland, so I texted her to wish her a happy birthday. When she said she was having a birthday lunch at the Beverly Hills Hotel, I said I'd be there. She told me to go to sleep as I was drunk. "That was 2am. I got up at 5am, went to Belfast airport for 6am, got the 7.15am flight to Heathrow, landed at 8.30am, took off again at 9.40am and arrived in LA at 1.15pm." The pair had been living in America whilst Cat was presenting So You Think You Can Dance. They nevertheless moved back to the UK in 2020.

'It's been well documented how much he loves playing for the Lions' - Andy Farrell hails Tadhg Furlong's 'amazing' Lions milestone

By Saturday night, Tadhg Furlong will be among esteemed British and Irish Lions company. The Wexford man is set to make his ninth consecutive start for the Lions in Test matches, a 100% record across his 2017, 2021 and 2025 tours. With nine Test caps, he will be inside the Lions' top 10 appearance holders of all time, a number only three Irish players have ever surpassed, those being Willie John McBride, Mike Gibson and Tony O'Reilly. Only Alun-Wyn Jones has made more Lions Test appearances in the professional era, while only four players have started more consecutive Tests across the 137-year history of Lions tours. "It's amazing, and it's been well documented how much he loves playing for the Lions," head coach Andy Farrell said, as he reflected on the 32-year-old's legacy. "It isn't just the performances that have been through the roof. It's also his manner on a Lions tour as well. I've never seen him in such good spirits, so he's ready to go again." Across both the Ireland and Lions team, Farrell has worked with Furlong for just shy of 10 years. And he says the prop's longevity hasn't occurred by accident, particularly in recent seasons when he has had to manage a series of calf and achilles injuries. "He would tell you that, he's had to adapt his training and how he looks after himself and understanding his body a lot more over the last couple of years. But to be honest, he's unbelievably diligent in all of that now. "But the nature of a tour like this works in somebody like Tadhg's favour because when you've not got a normal week, which is a seven-day process of warming up and warming down and having to do all sorts of stuff to tick boxes, you get out of your own way on a tour like this because you have to just roll with the punches of what's thrown in front of you. So I suppose that helps." Farrell has made two changes to his side for Saturday's final Test match in Sydney against the Wallabies, with James Ryan (below) and Blair Kinghorn starting, replacing Ollie Chessum and James Lowe. And the head coach says it was important to reward the pair after their impact off the bench in Saturday's series-clinching win in Melbourne. "We think that James thoroughly deserves his start. I think he's grown through this tour. "His physicality when he has come off the bench, when he has put the jersey on over the last three or four weeks has been there for all to see, so we think he's the right person to start the Test. "We thought that Blair is obviously a great athlete, but the unpredictability of his game makes him very dangerous. The conditions that we're expecting as far as the aerial game is concerned will be at its premium, so I think this game suits him," he added. In total, Farrell (below) has used just 27 players across these three Test matches, from a squad that at one stage had swelled to 45. Among those to have missed out on a Test cap is Josh van der Flier, one of Farrell's most trusted starters at Ireland. And the head coach says while players may be disappointed to have missed out on selection against the Wallabies, they've shown no signs of downing tools. "[I've learned] just how much they care. How much they care about the Lions, the Lions dream. How much it means to them. "When you package all that together of what it takes to come together as a top-class outfit as far as a rugby team, that's at the heart of it. "It actually touches you. It does. It touches you in the sense of how much it means to them. "For example, you come in after such a big victory on Saturday night, and I just left them to it because I couldn't get a word in. "The ones that were celebrating most were the ones who hadn't put the shirt on. It says it all, to be honest. "When we met back up on Tuesday and announced the team on Wednesday morning, and you see the same again – people reacting and congratulating each other. You get the type of training session we got yesterday afternoon, it says a lot about the squad." With the series already secure, Saturday's squad selection is a clear sign that Farrell (above) will not be content with a 2-1 victory, as the Lions look to complete a clean sweep over Australia for the first time in a three-game series since 1904. And while the summer did start with a defeat to Argentina in Dublin, the head coach says they're hugely motivated to finish their Australian tour unbeaten. "As you can imagine, it would mean the world to us. It's something that we promised ourselves that we was going to chase after and try our best to represent the group as best as we possibly can do. "Obviously, what goes along with that is representing the jersey and the brand of the British and Irish Lions, so we have a big responsibility this week.

Aanu prides herself on being a strong woman, but what she really longs for is to settle down and build a family. Amy, 33, Brecon, Wales, Primary School Teacher Amy has been single for two years since her last relationship broke down when she suggested they start a family. She describes herself as the "life and soul of the party" and has recently moved back to her native Wales after living in Dubai for the last few years. Bardha, 32, London, Sales and Marketing Director Bardha had been engaged to be married when she found messages to another girl on her ex-fiancé's phone. She ended the relationship immediately but still dreams of her happy ever after and would love her mother, who has battled cancer, to walk her down the aisle. Born in Kosovo, Bardha came to the UK as a young girl with her family to flee the war in her homeland. She says it's unusual in her culture for a woman of her age to be unmarried and her parents would love to see her settled down. Christine, 35, Limerick, Ireland, HR Operations Lead Christine has had her fair share of heartbreak and admits that bad boys are her downfall. The Monica from Friends lookalike finds it hard to date in her small rural town where the guys are already snapped up. Danielle, 33, Portsmouth, Estate Agent Business owner Danielle thinks her career success makes dating difficult but is hoping to meet someone whose work ethic matches her own. Holly, 30, London, Private Chef Holly's culinary business took off two years ago when her LinkedIn profile blew up and went viral, and now her clients include everyone from celebrities to schoolchildren. She wears her heart on her sleeve and tends to fall for guys quickly but finds it difficult to meet men who are emotionally available. She's hoping that will change with Love is Blind UK. Katisha, 31, Dumfries, Scotland, Nanny and Makeup Artist The eldest of seven children, Katisha has been single for more than six years and feels eternally unlucky in love. She says she needs the help of the experiment to widen her search and find men outside of her small hometown who are ready to commit. Katisha has a lot of love to give and is looking for a husband, not a boyfriend. Laurie, 37, London, Interior Stylist Laurie has been single for three years since splitting from her boyfriend over the two of them wanting different futures. She tends to date younger men and friends think this is where her love life is going wrong. Laurie is throwing herself into the experiment as she feels she's tried every other method of meeting someone and is now happy to give something unconventional a go. Loll, 31, Bedfordshire, Account Manager, Sales Loll's friends would describe her as a "loose cannon" and the one with all the outrageous dating stories. Megan, 28, London, Dancer and Fitness Instructor Megan says her best asset is her fiery red hair and she always brings the energy with her. Single for the last two years, she finds it difficult to meet people due to the travelling required in her line of work. She also reckons a lot of men don't take her profession seriously which could also be hindering her from finding someone ready to settle down. Sarover, 29, Buckinghamshire, Medical Company Owner Sarover grew up in a modern Indian family and has never had a serious relationship or dated outside of her ethnic background before. Growing up, she believed that a boyfriend should be the one she intended to marry and, as a result, ended up friend-zoning men. The eldest of three sisters, Sarover is the only one who is single and is ready to take charge of her love life in the Pods. Sophie, 28, Manchester (originally Shropshire), Senior Commercial Manager Despite ending a five-year relationship a year ago, law graduate Sophie doesn't think she's ever been in love and says she's scared of having her heart broken. Sophie admits she can be confrontational but thinks her over-protective dad and four brothers could be the reason she's still single. She's most attracted to men who can stand up for themselves and won't let her walk all over them. Tara, 33, Wicklow, Ireland, Café Owner Tara finds it tough to meet men in Wicklow because the dating pool is relatively small. Her last relationship ended 18 months ago after more than two years together because she felt they were recycling the same jokes and small talk. Tara was told by a fortune teller that she'd be engaged by September, so watch this space! Yolanda, 26, Hampshire, Specialist Occupational Therapist Adrenaline junkie Yolanda has been single for two years. When she was 15, she accidentally walked into a window and ended up in a coma but has learned to be proud of her scars. Male Contestants Billy, 35, Bangor, Northern Ireland, Army Physical Trainer Billy has been single since his divorce five years ago and finds the modern-day dating world "a complete minefield". Charlie, 28, Essex, Electrical Engineer Self-confessed "cheeky chappy" Charlie has had his confidence and trust dented in the past, but now feels ready to settle down. A former 'Jack the Lad' and party boy, Charlie has put those days behind him and is looking for an older, more mature woman to do life with. Chris, 33, Sussex, Data Analyst Chris is a hopeless romantic and isn't afraid to wear his heart on his sleeve and shower his potential partners with thoughtful gifts and date ideas. Despite this, Chris has been single for a year and thinks his struggle to find love is down to his failure to prioritise himself. Chris is a self confessed nerd with a love of numbers, but still hasn't found 'The One' and he is hoping Love is Blind UK can change that. Demola, 30, Essex, Financial Analyst Demola has thought about every detail of his wedding day from a young age and is looking for a wife he can be emotionally in tune with. Jack, 33, London, App Creator In his career, Jack is the brains behind some of the world's biggest dating apps, but hasn't been able to find his own forever swipe right. At the age of 30 Jack was rushed to hospital with appendicitis. Weeks later he was informed that a cancerous tumour had been found on his appendix. This completely turned his world upside down, especially as he was only 30 at the time. He has since been given the all-clear and has vowed never to take his health for granted again. James, 36, Skegness, Real Estate Manager James has been married before and has two daughters, aged eight and 10, with his ex-wife. He reckons not being in one place for long has affected his love life. Javen, 28, Kent, Health Coach Javen was on Crystal Palace's books until the age of 18 when a heartbreaking injury put an end to his promising football career. Jed, 31, Essex, Configuration Manager Having been single for a year, Jed is hoping Love is Blind UK will help him find a wife and start a family.
