After Op Sindoor success, Nagpur's Solar bags Army orders for night-op ‘killer drones'
The company signed an agreement to supply 450 Nagastra-1R to the Army within one year. This new system is equipped with a thermal camera for night operations apart from a 360 degree gimbal camera. The system has proprietary encryption for video and telemetry communication along with a high-precision targeting system. More than 80% of its components are indigenous, said a note shared with TOI.
The system was tested at different locations, including Ladakh for cold weather trials, and Babina near Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh.
Loitering munitions are drone-based systems. The drones carry the bombs as payloads, which are dropped after zeroing in on the target. As it hovers around until the target is fixed, it gets the name loitering munitions.
The Nagastra-1R also has full re-usability of the launcher systems, said sources. SADL is also developing the Nagastra 2 and Nagastra 3 versions, which have a higher range and can carry a heavier payload.
The trials for the two versions are due soon, said sources involved in the project.
The order to SADL for the Nagastra 1R loitering munitions comes after it successfully conducted trials for its hybrid vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) — Rudrastra — over a week ago. Rudrastra can penetrate deeper into enemy territory and return to the launch point. It has a range of up to 50km and can take a payload of 8kg, with an estimated endurance time of 1.5 hours.
The trials were held at Pokhran range.
SADL, which is predominantly into making military-grade ammunition, has over the years developed drone-based munition systems. Last month, it also tested its anti-drone system, Bhargavastra, which can attack a swarm of drones with a salvo of 64 mini rockets. Both guided and non-guided versions of the system have been tested.
In March, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated an airstrip at SADL's manufacturing facility. The 1,250-metre-long airstrip will cater to its project of building a medium altitude long endurance (MALE) UAV.

Row over ‘link' between Shrikant Shinde, Jharkhand liquor scam accused
Mumbai: The arrest of Amit Salunkhe, whose manpower supply agency Sumeet Facilities is among three firms accused of embezzling ₹450 crore from the Jharkhand excise department, has stirred a row in political circles in Maharashtra. Shrikant Shinde (left) and Eknath Shinde (HT Photo) On Friday, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut alleged that the businessman has links with Shiv Sena MP and deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde's son Shrikant Shinde. Sumeet Facilities, which runs over 1,500 emergency ambulances in Maharashtra through the '108' number along with two other firms, had escalated the annual charge for the ambulance service by hundreds of crores and Salunkhe had, in return, donated money to Shinde's foundation, Raut alleged. 'Amit Salunkhe has close connections with Shrikant Shinde and his firm received the contract to operate '108' ambulances from the state public health department, which is with the Eknath Shinde camp,' said Raut. On March 15, 2024, ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, the state government had issued an order approving the appointment of Sumeet Facilities as one of three firms for providing emergency ambulance services for 10 years at a yearly cost of ₹807.77 crore. On July 2, 2025, the government had issued another order, approving the monthly charge for June at ₹33.54 crore. The government also allocated 70% of the amount for immediate payment while the remaining 30% was to be paid during final settlement. 'The charge for ambulance services was escalated by hundreds of crores. In return, Salunkhe gave money to the Shrikant Shinde Medical Foundation,' alleged Raut. He said the Enforcement Directorate (ED) must probe all matters related to Salunkhe including the tender for providing emergency ambulance services in Maharashtra. NCP (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar said the agreement for running emergency ambulances between the state government and Sumeet Facilities must be suspended. 'The government did not pay any attention to allegations about corruption in the ambulance service contract till Salunkhe was arrested (on Wednesday) by Jharkhand police,' said Pawar. The scam was worth at least ₹6,000-crore as ambulances worth ₹33 lakh were supplied for ₹86 lakh, he alleged. 'We have repeatedly raised our voice about this matter. Soon, we will expose who received how much money,' he said. Shiv Sena leader and industries minister Uday Samant said Shrikant Shinde had proved his ability by leading a delegation to several countries following Operation Sindoor. 'People of Maharashtra will not believe such baseless allegations by Sanjay Raut,' said Samant. Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Deepesh Mhatre said the contract for solid waste management in 7-10 wards of the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) was awarded to Sumeet Elko, also owned by Amit Salunkhe, owing to his connections with the Shinde family. 'KDMC will pay them ₹85 crore per annum and as the contract is for 10 years, they will earn ₹850 crore,' said Mhatre. When contacted, Shiv Sena spokesperson Sheetal Mhatre said Raut made baseless allegations on a daily basis without any proof. 'There is no need to respond to his baseless allegations every day,' said Mhatre. HT reached out to Shrikant Shinde for his comets but did not get a response.

2 months after his remarks on Col Sofiya Qureshi sparked outrage, SIT finally questions Madhya Pradesh minister
Two months after Madhya Pradesh minister Kunwar Vijay Shah sparked outrage with his remarks on Colonel Sofiya Qureshi in the backdrop of Operation Sindoor, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) tasked with looking into the matter has finally recorded his statement. Sources said the questioning lasted nearly an hour and took place earlier this week in Jabalpur. The SIT is expected to submit its report to the Supreme Court ahead of the next hearing in the matter on July 28. The delay in recording Shah's statement has prompted strong reactions from the Opposition, which has questioned the neutrality of the investigation. Shah came under fire after he was heard saying at an event that India taught a lesson to those responsible for the Pahalgam terror attack using 'their own sister'. He has been widely criticised by many who allege that the statement was a reference to Col Qureshi, who gained nationwide prominence along with Wing Commander Vyomika Singh during media briefings on Operation Sindoor. The Madhya Pradesh High Court earlier rebuked Shah for using 'language of the gutters' and ordered the police to register an FIR against him on the charge of promoting enmity and hatred. After drawing severe condemnation, the minister expressed regret and said that he respects Col Qureshi more than his sister.

Agniveer dies, 2 soldiers hurt as landmine goes off in J&k
JAMMU: An Army Agniveer lost his life and two other soldiers were injured Friday when a landmine meant to check infiltration went off accidentally near the LoC in Krishna Ghati area of J&K's Poonch, reports Sanjay Khajuria. Agniveer Lalit Kumar of 7 JAT Regiment was on patrol as part of area-domination exercises with colleagues when the explosion occurred in the zone lashed by rain in the past few days, official sources said. It was not clear yet where Lalit hailed from. Havaldar Gajindera Singh and Subedar Hari Ram were airlifted to Army Hospital in Udhampur, around 300km away. The stretch along the LoC in J&K is dotted with landmines as a part of an Anti-Infiltration Obstacle System (AIOS). A few stray mines are sometimes washed away by rain and go off accidentally on contact, official sources said. "WhiteKnightCorps and all ranks pay solemn tribute to Agniveer Lalit Kumar, who made the supreme sacrifice. We stand with the bereaved family in this hour of grief," the Army's White Knight Corps posted on X.
