Doolan deflated but proud after Stanley draw
A brilliant Tyler Walton goal put Stanley ahead before the Gills, who are one of the pre-season favourites, levelled 11 minutes from time when Armani Little's curling corner was helped into the net by Stanley defender Devon Matthews.
'I am a little bit deflated as we probably should have won the game but I am proud of the players, getting a point out of the game in the end," said Doolan. "They showed great character.
'At half-time I was saying about the way we played in pre-season, we played well against tough opposition and the test is can you do it when you are playing for three points?
'We showed it in flashes in the first half and looked the better team.
'I was pleased with the way we started the second half. It was a great run from Tyler and he showed power and pace and it was a quality finish. If he carries on producing that consistently he won't be playing at this level.
'I thought we would go on and get a second but we have got to learn from the goal we gave away, it was a mistake.
'I always say, if you aren't going to win the game then make sure you don't lose it, so it's a point on the board.'
Blackburn-born Gillingham boss Gareth Ainsworth said he had plenty of positives to take from their opening day draw.
'We had a style we wanted to employ, trying to get down the sides, and we did it well in the first half and had some decent spells," he said.
'There was a 20-minute spell in the second half where Accrington were on top and they got their goal and we were more messy and direct.
'We made changes and they gave us the impetus. The way the lads have fought to get back in the game, it was thoroughly deserved.
'We have got a lot of positives and now I am looking forward to building on it.
'It wasn't a game of great quality, I know we have to play more, but when you come to Accrington you know they will scrap and fight. They have some good players but you have to match the fight.
'I am proud to take a point as many teams will come here and not get anything.'

NI's Burrows given 16-game ban for alleged assault
Cliftonville captain Kelsie Burrows has been handed a 16-match ban for an alleged assault on a match official. The Northern Ireland international was shown a red card by referee Simon Bickerstaff after the Reds' 2-0 win against Glentoran Women on 25 July. Burnley set to sign Chelsea midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu
Chelsea are ramping up efforts to trim their bloated squad and have agreed a deal to sell another one of their many dead wood. According to The Athletic, young midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu is the latest to make his way out of Stamford Bridge after Chelsea agreed a permanent deal with Burnley. The 21-year-old defensive midfielder joined Chelsea from Ligue 1 outfit Stade Rennais in a deal worth around £23 million two years ago. However, he hardly got a chance to develop or prove his worth in Chelsea colours, featuring just 15 times for the Blues across all competitions. He spent last season on loan at Southampton and was one of only a few bright sparks in a Saints side that were ultimately relegated from the Premier League. He made 31 appearances across all competitions and started 18 of the 26 Premier League games he featured in. The French youth international won 54% of his aerial duels and 55% of his ground battles. He'd be hoping he can establish himself at Burnley after showing glimpses of his potential at Southampton. Ugochukwu has been granted permission to travel for a medical and is expected to sign a five-year contract with the Premier League newcomers. If he lives up to expectation, he could be a valuable asset to Scott Parker's side as they look to cement a place in the English top flight.
