Joao Neves netted a brace before Thomas Aviles turned the ball into his own net. Achraf Hakimi added PSG's fourth to complete a 4-0 win over the MLS side.
European champions PSG outclassed MLS side Inter Miami in the Round of 16 of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 on Sunday with a 4-0 triumph over Lionel Messi's side.
Joao Neves netted a brace before Thomas Aviles found the wrong end of the net. Achraf Hakimi added PSG's fourth.
Miami was hopeful that the magic of the Argentine superstar could help them achieve an unlikely result against his former team, but the Major League Soccer side was dismantled in Atlanta by Luis Enrique's dominant European champions.
The aging Messi and his former Barcelona teammates Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba had done well to reach the last 16, but the quality gap between the teams was clear over the 90 minutes.
Joao Neves scored twice for PSG, who also benefitted from a Tomas Aviles own goal, while Achraf Hakimi found the back of the net as well.
After Neves opened the scoring early, Miami held out until PSG scored three goals in 10 minutes towards the end of the first half.
Messi was the main attraction, with fans chanting his name, and most of the 66,000-strong crowd were dressed in Miami's hot pink, with a few Argentina shirts mixed in.
PSG dominated from the start, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia drifting into the box and setting up Bradley Barcola, but Miami goalkeeper Oscar Ustari denied him with an outstretched leg.
Vitinha delivered a free-kick to the back post where Portuguese midfielder Neves, left completely unmarked, stooped to nod past Ustari after six minutes.
PSG's Fabian Ruiz had a goal disallowed for offside before Miami defender Noah Allen limped off injured, further hindering Javier Mascherano's side.
With the Ligue 1 champions pressing high and maintaining possession, Miami struggled to get Messi involved. The 38-year-old Argentine superstar played a superbly weighted pass down the right flank for Tadeo Allende, but a rare Miami break came to nothing. Messi's occasional interventions were not enough to stem the Parisian tide.
PSG doubled their lead in the 39th minute when veteran holding midfielder Busquets made a mistake in front of his own box.
Spanish compatriot Ruiz quickly dispossessed him and combined with Barcola to set up Neves for his second goal.
PSG's third came when Aviles deflected Doue's cross into his own net, and Hakimi scored the fourth before half-time, putting PSG out of reach.
The Moroccan international's first effort was deflected onto the crossbar, but he stayed alert at the air-conditioned Mercedes-Benz Stadium to fire home the rebound.
Eight-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi lost his temper with a swipe at Vitinha, expressing his frustration at the midfielder, Miami's impotence, and PSG's dominance.
Messi made an excellent pass for Suarez early in the second half, chipping the ball over the PSG defence, but the Uruguayan could not finish to give Miami a lifeline.
Despite the improbability of a comeback—there would be no repeat of Luis Enrique's Barcelona comeback in 2017 against PSG from four goals down, in which Messi and Suarez both scored—the Argentine was determined to exit with a flourish.
Messi forced a save from PSG's Gianluigi Donnarumma after the hour mark with a low shot.
Luis Enrique brought on winger Ousmane Dembele for his first appearance of the tournament after a hamstring injury, but the Frenchman was rusty and inaccurate.
When Suarez was fouled by Lucas Beraldo on the edge of the box, Messi had a chance to replicate his free-kick winner against Porto in the group stage, but his effort hit the wall.
It was not to be for Messi or Miami, but their second-half performance was respectable, and the defeat was by a smaller margin than PSG's 5-0 Champions League final thrashing of Inter Milan.

Club World Cup: Mighty PSG sets sights on another trophy with a dominating win over Messi's Inter Miami

ATLANTA: Paris Saint-Germain left no doubt it was Europe's top club with a historic victory in the Champions League. Now, PSG is intent on conquering the world. Les Rouge-et-Bleu turned in a dominating performance at the Club World Cup on Sunday, brushing aside Lionel Messi and Inter Miami with a first-half blitz that resulted in a 4-0 victory. While the European powerhouses complained mightily about having to play in the newly expanded tournament at the end of a grueling season, PSG is taking the 32-team competition seriously. Outside of a 1-0 loss to Brazilian club Botafogo in group play, PSG has won three games by a cumulative 10-0 since arriving in the United States. "It's clear that this is a historic season for us. We intend to continue making history with this competition," PSG coach Luis Enrique said through an interpreter. "We're fighting to claim silverware. This season is very long for all the teams. But we're excited to be here." PSG advanced to the quarterfinals, where it will face Bayern Munich next Saturday in Atlanta. The German club defeated Flamengo of Brazil 4-2. There was a huge buildup to the game against Messi, who played two seasons at PSG before making the move to South Florida in the twilight of his brilliant career and was facing his former coach at Barcelona. But even with an eight-time Ballon d'Or winner leading the way, the club from Major League Soccer was simply no match for a deep, talented squad that routed Inter Milan 5-0 in the Champions League final a month ago.

If he can make it to the knockout stages, he is surely going to fancy his chances of putting up a good fight and hopefully see himself draw has been fairly kind to start things off, but he could be up against Alexander Bublik in the third round, which could be his first big test before the round of 16 LEHECKAThe 23-year-old from the Czech Republic had a very positive showing at the Queen's Club, where he took down some fairly big names like Jack Draper, Alex de Minaur and Gabriel Diallo. While he may have fallen short in the final, he did give a good fight to Carlos Alcaraz. He won five games in the first set and took the game to the third by winning the second set as well. Considering his recent form, it would come as no surprise if he can put up a strong showing at luck of the draw on his side, it would be expected that he makes the to the fourth round at the very least. The rest that comes up will certainly be on if he can turn MEDVEDEVWhen it comes to people who fumble on the big stage, Medvedev is certainly up there in that category, and this time it could just be written in the stars for the Russian. Since June 2025, he had not played on grass since his semi-final loss to Alcaraz at had a rough start to his time in grass in 2025. Reilly Opelka managed to get the better of him, resulting in a quarterfinal exit. But he seems to have picked up the pace in the Halle Open, where he went all the way to the final to once again choke under pressure and be beaten by the final man in this list, the ultimate wildcard, Alexander draw has been fairly kind to him as well, with the biggest named threat coming in the fourth round, assuming Taylor Fritz can make it till that stage. His performance in the Halle Open is one to note. Especially since he took down a tournament favourite, Jannik Sinner, in the Round of also took things further by annihilating Medvedev in the final, which took a straight-set win to give him a lot of momentum coming in. With all the confidence, he decided to withdraw from the Eastbourne Open to give himself enough rest to come into Wimbledon as fresh as he can draw has not been as kind as people may think. Considering the worst-case scenario, he would have to take down the likes of Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic and Jack Draper if they perform as expected and make their way has clearly shown the ability to compete with the best, but at times, he can be his own worst enemy. For the time being, he will hope that his instincts guide him right to hopefully go all the way.- Ends

Beating Messi and Miami ‘harder than it may seem': PSG boss Enrique after win in FIFA Club World Cup

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) coach Luis Enrique said defeating Lionel Messi and Inter Miami on Sunday was trickier than it seemed despite the French side's 4-0 Club World Cup last 16 triumph. Joao Neves' early strike sent PSG ahead and then it scored three more in a flurry before half-time to take an unassailable lead. Former PSG and Barcelona star Messi impressed in the second half as Miami battled well but could not find a way through. 'It is difficult to play against players of this calibre, it was difficult, but I think as a team, we did an excellent job,' Luis Enrique told reporters. 'There's a visible difference between the first and second halves... their quality is evident, and I think we deserved the victory. 'It was harder than it may seem, after the first half.' The Spanish coach said PSG, which won the Champions League, Ligue 1 and the French Cup to claim its first ever treble, is in spectacular form and is hoping to triumph in the United States. 'Clearly, we are experiencing a historic season for our club, we aim to go far in this competition,' Enrique continued. 'We are in the quarterfinals, with only eight teams remaining. Our goal is to progress as far as possible and to compete for the trophy. But for that, we need to overcome two more knock-out rounds. 'The season is very long, as it is for all teams, but the motivation to be competitive is there.' PSG winger Ousmane Dembele said he was 'glad to see' Messi and his former Barcelona team-mates Luis Suarez, Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets and Javier Mascherano. 'Leo is a unique person, to share a game with him was magnificent, I was a kid watching his magic on the television, so it's unique,' said PSG defender Lucas Beraldo. 'Reality' hits Inter Miami coach Mascherano said he was pleased with his team's performance at the tournament despite their eventual thrashing by PSG. 'We achieved the goal we had set for ourselves, we were very aware that we could compete up to a certain level, and today has shown that,' Mascherano told reporters. 'I am very proud of my players, of the work they did in the competition (...) we tried to show in each match what we could do. The gap is what it is, but I am very proud of them.' Mascherano said his Argentine compatriot Messi was able to show his quality despite the defeat. 'I think Leo played a great game, within the options we had. In the second half, we found him much more. In the first half, we couldn't due to Paris's pressure,' said the coach. 'They slowed their tempo in the second half, and we were able to show what we usually do in MLS (Major League Soccer).' Despite PSG being arguably the best team in the world at the moment, the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta was filled with Inter Miami shirts, mostly with eight-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi's No. 10 on the back. 'PSG is in great form, champions of everything, but people still pay for a ticket to see Leo Messi, even at 38 years old,' added Mascherano.
