‘Ton watch' on as Jeremy Cameron kicks career-high bag in Geelong's demolition of North Melbourne

7NEWS5 days ago
Geelong superstar Jeremy Cameron has kicked a career-high bag of 11 goals in the Cats' 101-point demolition of North Melbourne on Saturday night.
In a match that looked like a glorified training drill at times, the Cats ran rings around the hapless Roos under the roof at Marvel Stadium.
With the result all but confirmed midway through the second quarter, all the interest was on Cameron, who could make a charge to kick 100 goals in the season.
Cameron had three in the first 10 minutes to lay the foundation for the big bag.
He added another two late in the second quarter to make it five in a half.
Cameron was getting them from all angles as teammates passed to him at every opportunity.
Four more followed in the third quarter, including a brilliant set shot on the siren, to equal his previous career-high of nine.
The 10th came in the opening minute of the final term, but he wasn't done there.
He added one more late on to make it 11 as skipper Patrick Dangerfield, who was subbed out in the third term, watched on from the bench while eating a souvlaki.
Cameron is now up to 69 goals for the season and has all but secured the Coleman Medal.
The magical 100-goal mark is suddenly on the cards as well. With games against Port Adelaide, Essendon, Sydney and Richmond to come, plus finals there is a big chance.
While Cameron will dominate the headlines, the fallout for the Roos could be significant.
It was comfortably their worst loss of the season and once again raises questions about their trajectory.
They were missing stars Tristan Xerri and Nick Larkey, but still had a host of talented players in action.
The Roos remain in second-last position on the ladder.
Geelong, meanwhile, rocket up to fourth place and a huge percentage.

AFL 2025: North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson confident he can steer through Roos' ‘growing pains'

North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson insists he is up for the challenge of leading the Kangaroos through their 'growing pains'. The Kangaroos suffered their worst loss for the season to Geelong last Saturday, succumbing to the Cats by 101 points, and are facing a sixth straight bottom-two finish. Despite collecting more wins than last year, the heat has risen on Clarkson and whether he is developing the raft of first-round picks to compete at AFL level. Clarkson referenced young defender Wil Dawson and how the Roos would persist with him in important roles, like the one he had on Jeremy Cameron for parts last week. The four-time premiership coach said 'it's all terrific learning' for players of Dawson's experience as they pushed through 'growing pains'. 'Three or four weeks ago when (Dawson) played against (Sam) Darcy, it was a real step forward, 'Geez, he can compete with Sam Darcy, that's a good effort',' he said. 'Then he has a game against Geelong last week and it's Cameron and (Shannon) Neale and it's like, 'Oh wow, there's 15 goals between them' … it's all terrific learning. 'Some players need that exposure and it's tough to sit through. We don't want to sit through it for too long … it's just some of the growing pains unfortunately. 'Some of the more senior, experienced sides in the competition have already been through those growing pains, we're going through them now.' Clarkson said the question marks on whether he'd developed the young Roos at all were 'all part' of being a senior coach. He doesn't know when it can turn for North Melbourne but is confident it can. 'It's why we do what we do, we love the game and part of the challenge is overcoming the adversity,' he said. 'It's a tough job though with any list in the competition and we just keep batting away at it. 'I had some tough times when I was at Hawthorn, 2014, no one would look at it and say, '2014 was a terrific year for Hawthorn, they won the premiership that year'. 'But gee we confronted some adversity. I was out for six weeks with a serious illness, some of our more senior players were missing 10, 12, 14 weeks of footy and it was a really, really tough year. 'It was unbelievably rewarding that even despite the adversity we were able to win – but that's what we're searching for. 'We know this game is tough, whether you're a side that's good and challenging at the top end, it's still really, really tough. 'Having been in the game a long period of time, as tough as it is and it seems like, 'Well gee we're being overly patient'. All of a sudden it will turn and the confidence of the group will rise. 'When that's going to happen, I don't know, but sometimes it can happen really quickly.' Clarkson vows he is still up for the challenge of rebuilding North Melbourne and again uses his time at Hawthorn as proof. 'I love the challenge of it, it's a significant challenge, but I don't see it any different to the challenge when I first arrived at Hawthorn,' he said. 'No senior coach, political turmoil in the footy club, less than 25,000 members and in a very, very quick space of time that club was able to turn itself around. 'I am confident it can be done here as well and I'm enjoying the challenge of it as well.'

Geelong coach Chris Scott set to sign contract extension until end of 2029

Chris Scott is set to rule himself out of becoming the inaugural Tasmanian coach and sign a contract extension at Geelong. The two-time premiership coach is on the verge of inking a new deal through to the end of 2029, according to Channel 7's Caroline Wilson. Scott was already contracted until the end of next season, but will soon sign the blockbuster extension. He is not the only big name to recommit to the club with Wilson also reporting CEO Steve Hocking also extending until the end of 2029. 'They've both attracted interest elsewhere, but we can report tonight that the Geelong board have just extended Steve Hocking's contract until the end of 2029,' Wilson said on The Agenda Setters. 'So that's a four-year new contract for the former AFL football boss who went back to Geelong and was with Chris Scott for that flag a couple of years ago. 'Chris Scott has not yet made an announcement, nor do I think it's been signed, but he will extend his deal, which currently runs to the end of next year, also to the end of 2029.' Wilson also reported Scott will get a big pay rise next year in the line with the expanded soft cap rules. 'He'll also get a pay rise next year, even though he's contracted because, of course, the soft cap, as we know, has been expanded,' she continued. 'So this is already one of the greatest partnerships in football at what is now looming as probably the most stable footy club.' Scott, who has won the most games as coach this century, was courted by Tasmania to be the Devils' inaugural coach. He spoke with CEO Brendan Gale and met with board member Alastair Lynch. But he will continue his stint as Geelong coach for a record-extending 19th season if he remains in charge for 2029. Already the record-holder for most games coached at Geelong, Scott was delivered the club two premierships (2011 and 2022). He has the Cats well-placed for another tilt this year as they sit in fourth place with four rounds left in the season. With Scott now off Tasmania's list, Wilson believes former Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley is now their No.1 target. The Magpies great has already publicly declared his interest in becoming the inaugural coach. Tasmania have been slated to enter the AFL in 2028, but there are still a few hurdles to clear before it becomes official.
