Club World Cup dismissed as a Fifa ‘fiction' by head of players' union
Sergio Marchi joined the ranks of those critical of Infantino's new tournament, saying a 'lack of protection' for players had left the Club World Cup equivalent to 'bread and circuses'. It is understood Fifpro was not invited to a meeting regarding player welfare held by Infantino in New York on the eve of the final, won 3-0 by Chelsea against Paris Saint-Germain.
Marchi said the Club World Cup was not without its strengths because it had 'generated enthusiasm among numerous fans and allowed some of the world's leading figures to be seen in a single tournament', but he said it did not represent football well.
'Fifpro cannot fail to point out, with absolute clarity, that this competition hides a dangerous disconnect with the true reality experienced by most footballers around the world,' he said. 'What was presented as a global celebration of football was nothing more than a fiction created by Fifa, promoted by its president, without dialogue, sensitivity and respect for those who sustain the game with their daily efforts.
'A grandiloquent staging inevitably reminiscent of the 'bread and circuses' of Nero's Rome, entertainment for the masses while behind the scenes inequality, precariousness and the lack of protection for the true protagonists deepen.'
Those 'true protagonists' are the players, including those of Chelsea and PSG who will start their new league seasons five weeks after the final. Fifpro last month urged Fifa to grant players a four-week rest between seasons. This request has not been taken up, however, with the meeting on Saturday ending with an agreement that three weeks of rest would be sufficient. 'There is a consensus that there must be at least 72 hours of rest between matches, and that players should have a rest period/holiday of at least 21 days at the end of each season,' Fifa said.
Fifpro is part of a group of football bodies, including the Premier League, pursuing legal action against Fifa over an alleged lack of consultation regarding the Club World Cup and changes to the international match calendar more broadly.
Fifa has said it is 'fully within our rights to set the parameters of our competitions whilst respecting the regulatory framework in place', and the prospect of a legal row was described by Infantino as a 'futile'.

Fifa said there had been agreement at the weekend's meeting that the calendar needed to 'strike the right balance between national team football and club football, on the one hand, and between domestic, continental, and global club competitions, on the other hand'. The Club World Cup is the only global club competition.

Nicolas Jackson: Manchester United monitoring Chelsea forward
Manchester United are monitoring the situation of Nicolas Jackson as the forward weighs up his future after Chelsea's summer spending spree, which included the acquisition of strikers Liam Delap and João Pedro. Pedro scored three times for Chelsea having joined up with them during their victorious Club World Cup triumph after his £60million move from Brighton & Hove Albion while Delap, who joined from Ipswich Town last month for £30million, scored in the group stage win over Espérance de Tunis. Jackson failed to score in the tournament in the United States and the 24-year-old Senegalese was banned for two matches for a studs-up challenge on Flamengo defender Lucas Ayrton. Chelsea are not actively looking to sell Jackson, who cost them £32million two years ago when they bought him from Villarreal, but there is a feeling that they could end up cashing in on the player if they receive a decent offer for him, and United are among a number of interested clubs. AC Milan and Aston Villa are also monitoring events. Chelsea also spent an initial fee of £48.5million on Jamie Gittens, the winger from Borussia Dortmund, a fortnight ago. United want to bolster their attack after they scored only 44 Premier League goals last season, their worst total for a single league campaign since 1973-74 (38 goals) — when they were relegated. Jackson celebrates Chelsea's Club World Cup success, a competition in which he made one start, scored no goals and was sent off four minutes into another substitute appearance GETTY IMAGES After their signing of attacker Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £62.5million last month, United are in talks with Brentford over a deal for forward Bryan Mbeumo, who is valued at a similar price by the London club. United have so far failed to get rid of wantaway players like Marcus Rashford, Antony, Jadon Sancho, Tyrell Malacia and Alejandro Garnacho, but they are still set to make up to about £18million from sell-on clauses in the contracts of Anthony Elanga, Maxi Oyedele and Álvaro Carreras, the latter of who joined Real Madrid in a £37million deal from Benfica on Tuesday.

Tottenham and Nottingham Forest locked in Morgan Gibbs-White standoff as dispute over £60m release clause explained
TOTTENHAM and Nottingham Forest are engaged in a battle of brinkmanship over Morgan Gibbs-White. Forest issued legal complaints to Spurs and Gibbs-White's representatives after the North Londoners thought they had triggered a £60million release clause to buy the England man. 4 The Tricky Trees are arguing they did not give permission to approach their talisman. While they all cite breach of confidentiality of the release clause, given they did not tell Tottenham of its existence. They are yet to take their formal complaint to the Premier League, who would be obliged to investigate any objection they receive. The fact that Gibbs-White is still a Forest player raises the question as to whether all the conditions of the release clause have been met. Some release clauses are not as simple as paying a specific figure. For example, they can also have conditions involving the payment plan or stipulations involving who the buying club is. Theoretically, if Spurs have not met those conditions but suddenly now do, it would add further weight to Forest 's breach of confidentiality argument, which could explain why the move is currently in limbo. Having already sold key winger Anthony Elanga to Newcastle for £55m, Forest are not under financial pressure to sell and would prefer to keep Gibbs-White. They have been attempting to extend his contract for the last year, but it is understood that MGW and his representatives have thus far not been interested in entering negotiations. Gibbs-White, 25, trained today as normal during Forest's pre-season. What's next in Gibbs-White to Tottenham saga? | Transfers Exposed The belief is that he is still likely to become a Spurs player this summer, but it is a matter of who blinks first between Forest and Tottenham. 4 TRANSFER NEWS LIVE - KEEP UP WITH ALL THE LATEST FROM A BUSY SUMMER WINDOW 4

NFL star drops bombshell trade hint and hits out at his team after missing out on the Super Bowl last season
Washington Commanders star Terry McLaurin has dropped a bombshell trade hint amid his contract standoff with the NFL side. McLaurin - who is viewed as one of the best wide receivers in the league - is entering the final year of his current deal with the Commanders, which he signed in 2022. The former Ohio State star has been a mainstay in the side since being drafted in 2019 but notably elevated his game last year, despite missing out on the Super Bowl. As a result, McLaurin, 29, feels as though he's done enough to earn a new deal and made that clear as he spoke to press on Tuesday afternoon. He said: 'I've been pretty frustrated, I'm not going to lie. Everything that has transpired up until this point has been disappointing and frustrating. 'I want to continue my career here. I've created my life here. My wife and I bought our first home here. This has been somewhere I've always wanted to be'. He later added: 'Without any progressive discussions, it's hard to see me stepping on the field.' McLaurin, 29, did not take part in the Commanders' minicamp in an attempt to make a statement to franchise chiefs over his contract impasse. Last season, McLaurin exploded into life and produced 1,096 receiving yards paired with a career-high 13 touchdowns for the Commanders. Despite the impressive performances, the franchise narrowly missed out on a place in the Super Bowl after losing the NFC Championship Game to the Philadelphia Eagles. McLaurin's bombshell statement comes just one day after New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson reached an agreement over a new four-year, $130million deal. For context, McLaurin signed a three-year contract extension worth $71 million - with a $28 million signing bonus - back in 2022. Wilson's new deal, which will see him bank an estimated $90m guaranteed, makes him the first receiver in NFL history to earn an average of over $31m per year after playing only three seasons in the league. ESPN was first to break the news of the 24-year-old's extension, which keeps him with the Jets through 2030. Wilson is gearing up for his fourth season in New York after being selected with the 10th overall pick in the first round of the 2022 draft.
