Strawberry Moon: Best places in Perth to catch a glimpse of full moon on Wednesday, June 11

West Australian09-06-2025
Stargazers across the globe will be treated to a spectacular lunar event as the Strawberry Moon rises on Wednesday.
Peaking at 3:43pm Perth time, this full moon will be the closest to Earth this year, making it appear larger and brighter.
While no special equipment is required and West Aussies can simply gaze up at the night sky, there are a few tips to keep in mind to make the most of the experience.
Matt Woods from Perth Observatory recommends casting an eye at the moon between 6pm and 7pm as it rises into the darkened sky.
He said the full moon can be seen from most spots across WA, as long as the weather plays ball.
'People can look out from their front and backyards, it just has to be clear, so the weather has got to be good with no obstructions,' he said.
'It's the lowest full moon of the year in the southern hemisphere because June is so close to the winter solstice, so that angle makes the moon appear larger and more golden near the horizon.'
Mr Wood advises West Aussies looking for the best view to head to specific vantage points in and around Perth.
'Kings Park, Mundaring Weir, the Golden View Lookout, Perth Hills, Wireless Hill, Rea Bold Hill, and even Rottnest Island looking back towards Perth,' he suggested.
Despite its name, the full moon won't appear red or pink, but will instead illuminate with a yellow or orange hue.
So where does the Strawberry Moon get its name? It originates from Native American groups, who used the celestial event as a sign it was time for strawberry harvesting.

WA weather: BOM issues wind, fire and farmer warnings as blustery winds and heavy rainfall expected

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued multiple weather warnings as West Aussies prepare for blustery winds and heavy downpours on Wednesday and Thursday. The wind warning issued on Wednesday continue into Thursday, with a gale warning for Esperance Coast and Eucla Coast. There is also a strong marine wind warning for most of WA, covering the following coasts: Pilbara West, Ningaloo, Gascoyne, Geraldton, Lancelin, Perth, Bunbury Geographe, Leeuwin and Albany. The strong winds have also led to a fire warning for Thursday in the central interior region of WA; this is due to dry and windy conditions that are forecast to develop during Thursday ahead of a strong cold front crossing the Central Interior district in the evening. BOM also issued a warning to sheep graziers on Wednesday afternoon, alerting farmers that cold temperatures, rain and showers and southwesterly winds are expected during Wednesday and Thursday, which poses the risk of losses of lambs and sheep exposed to these conditions. Areas likely to be affected include parts of the Lower West, South Coastal, South East Coastal and Great Southern forecast districts. In Perth, there's a very high chance of showers on Wednesday evening and winds are expected to be northwesterly at 15 to 25 km/h turning west to southwesterly 20 to 30 km/h in the evening. On Thursday, there is also a very high chance of showers in Perth, with possible hail throughout the day and a chance of a thunderstorm near the coast in the early morning. Thursday — Min 5, Max 14 — Showers. Friday — Min 3, Max 15 — Mostly sunny. Saturday — Min 4, Max 16 — Partly cloudy. Sunday — Min 6, Max 14 — Showers. Monday — Min 5, Max 15 — Shower or two. WA weather warning: Downpours of rain and ‘vigorous' winds expected to batter the southwest

People in WA's South West are bracing themselves for a battering of wet weather as the strongest front of the year so far is set to hit on Monday. West Aussies can expect an influx of wet weather between Sunday afternoon until Monday night as two cold fronts prepare to lash the southwest coastline. A strong cold front on Sunday is set to bring 'vigorous northwesterly winds,' with damaging with gusts up to 100km/h, the Bureau of Meteorology said. Mandurah is set to cop the brunt of it as the bureau predicts 'locally destructive wind gusts' above 125km/h and the possibility of 'significant damage to homes and property.' Affected locations may include Albany, Bunbury, Esperance, Katanning, Mandurah, Manjimup, Margaret River, Mount Barker, Narrogin, Northam and Perth. Heavy, six-hourly rainfall between 30-40mm are likely, which may lead to flash flooding. There will be a short reprieve overnight before a second cold front arrives on Monday, bringing with it even fiercer conditions. 'The front crossing on Monday is stronger, people in the southwest of WA experience fronts as windy as this about five times per year,' the bureau said. 'This second front will be the strongest front of the year to date.' The Department of Fire and Emergency Services advised residents to prepare now by tying down any loose outdoor furniture or preparing an emergency kit. Conditions are expected to ease from the west on Monday evening.
