Indian villagers beat five to death for 'witchcraft'
Three people have been arrested and have confessed to the crime, police in the northern state of Bihar said in a statement.
Three women -- including a 75-year-old -- were among those murdered.
The main accused believed that his son's recent death was caused by one of those killed, and blamed "him and his family of practising witchcraft", the statement said.
"After beating the victims to death, the perpetrators loaded the bodies onto a tractor and dumped them in a pond," police said.
The murderers and victims all belonged to India's Oraon tribe in Bihar, India's poorest state and a mainly Hindu region of at least 130 million people.
Despite campaigns against superstition, belief in witchcraft remains widespread in rural areas across India, especially in isolated tribal communities.
Some states, including Bihar, have introduced laws to try to curb crimes against people accused of witchcraft and superstition.
Women have often been branded witches and targeted, but the killing of the family of five stands out as a particularly heinous recent example.
More than 1,500 people -- the overwhelming majority of them women -- were killed in India on suspicion of witchcraft between 2010 and 2021, according to the National Crime Records Bureau.
Some believe in the occult, but attackers also sometimes have other motives including usurping their rights over land and property. - AFP

According to police, Wilga has been travelling around Australia for two years, often staying in hostels and working on mining sites to fund her trip. She had last been spotted in Beacon, a town in the sparsely populated Wheatbelt region, on July 29. Local police said a father shot dead his daughter after she refused to delete her account on popular video-sharing app TikTok. In Pakistan, women can be subjected to violence by family members for not following strict rules on how to behave in public, including in online spaces. 'The girl's father had asked her to delete her TikTok account. On refusal, he killed her,' a police spokesperson said yesterday. According to a police report shared with AFP, investigators said the father killed his 16-year-old daughter on Tuesday 'for honour'. He was subsequently arrested. The victim's family initially tried to 'portray the murder as a suicide' according to police in the city of Rawalpindi, where the attack happened, next to the capital Islamabad. Last month, a 17-year-old girl and TikTok influencer with hundreds of thousands of online followers was killed at home by a man whose advances she had refused. Influencer Sana Yousaf had racked up more than a million followers on social media accounts including TikTok, where she shared videos of her favourite cafes, skincare products, and traditional outfits. TikTok is wildly popular in Pakistan, in part because of its accessibility to a population with low literacy levels. Pakistani women have found both audience and income on the app, which is rare in a country where fewer than a quarter of the women participate in the formal economy. However, only 30% of women in Pakistan own a smartphone compared to twice as many men (58%), the largest gap in the world, according to the Mobile Gender Gap Report of 2025. The life-threatening stunt took place near Talupali village, close to Purunapani station in Boudh district, on June 29. In a video of the incident available on local news platforms, the boy, who is said to be 12 years old, is seen lying between the rails as a train speeds past him. A second boy, aged 15, reportedly filmed the stunt while a third friend stood by. As soon as the train passes and he emerges unharmed, the group is heard cheering and clapping. He is then seen posing for photographs. The boy told the police that his friends came up with the idea and that he was hoping the clip would go viral, according to Indian news broadcaster NDTV. 'When the train passed by, my heart was racing. I did not expect to survive,' the boy was quoted as saying in the NDTV report. The footage, which was uploaded to social media, had sparked concerns about the lengths young people would go to for viral content on social media.
