'Your friend in China...': Tharoor slams Beijing for backing Pak shielding terror group names at UNSC
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has taken a swipe at China for supporting Pakistan's call to shield the names of terrorist organisations at the UN Security Council, while reminding the delegation in Brazil that India's Operation Sindoor was a retaliation for terrorism.
During a discussion with Ambassador Celso Amorim of Brazil, Tharoor, who is leading an all-party delegation, highlighted New Delhi's fight against cross-border terrorism. He said, 'Pakistan government, I am sorry to say that with the support of your friend in China, took out the name, so there is not even a reference. We are not on the Security Council, and neither are you. We have to change that situation. Both of us should be on the Council together.'

Talking about Operation Sindoor, Tharoor said, 'The whole idea was to signal that we are not trying to start a war, we are just conducting retribution for an act of terror, which was a really vile act, 26 people being killed. It was horrendous and it was meant to do the maximum possible damage to India, to disrupt the Kashmiri economy, which was booming, to end the prospects of tourism flourishing in Kashmir…also to perhaps create a communal backlash in India.'
He also expressed gratitude to Brazil for standing by India and calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally to offer condolences following the Pahalgam attack of April 22.
Meanwhile, the Indian delegation, headed by Shashi Tharoor, is set to arrive in the United States for the final phase of its tour. Interestingly, a Pakistani delegation led by former Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari is also expected to be in the U.S. on Tuesday. Both groups are aiming to engage with American political leaders and lawmakers to rally support for their respective national interests.
Talking about the timing of the Pakistani delegation's visit, Tharoor said, 'Tomorrow almost they will be in Washington, while we are in Washington on the same date. So there's going to be perhaps an increase in interest because of the fact that there are two duelling delegations in the same city.'

NSUI demands student union polls: Rajasthan Congress leaders face water cannons, over 30 detained
National Students' Union of India (NSUI) workers and senior Congress leaders, including AICC general secretary Sachin Pilot, on Monday staged a protest in Jaipur demanding the immediate restoration of student union elections. The Rajasthan Police used water cannons to disperse the protesters when, after a demonstration, tried to breach police barricades to march towards the chief minister's residence in Civil Lines area. A mild scuffle broke out between the police and NSUI workers, after which over 30 party leaders and workers, including Ladnun MLA Mukesh Bhakar and NSUI state president Vinod Jakhar, were detained. Speaking to the media after the protest, Pilot accused the BJP government in the state led by Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma of deliberately delaying various elections, including panchayat and urban body polls. He said the state government was working in a dictatorial manner, taking inspiration from Delhi. 'This is a double-engine government that is doing nothing. When elections arrive, they raise issues of Hindu-Muslim, temple-mosque and try to polarise voters. If people continue to vote based on religion and caste, this will happen,' he said. 'They are scared to lose, hence they are adopting tactics to crush the voice of students,' he said. Pilot claimed that students across the state are seeking elections and criticised the BJP for having 'no valid reason' to halt the process. Responding to the allegations, Deputy CM Prem Chand Bairwa said it was the previous Congress government under Ashok Gehlot that had stopped the student union elections. Students should be questioning Ashok Gehlot about why elections weren't held during his tenure. We are committed to the welfare of students,' Bairwa stated.

Modi tells NDA meet Oppn scored self-goal on Sindoor
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday hit out at opposition parties while addressing lawmakers from the National Democratic Alliance, saying that by criticising the government on Operation Sindoor they forced a discussion on an issue that was 'his turf'. Modi took potshots at Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, without naming him. 'He said there is an opposition leader prone to making childish comments. (ANI) A resolution saluting the valour of the armed forces and hailing the Prime Minister's 'unwavering resolve, visionary statesmanship and resolute command' was passed at the meeting. According to people privy to the details, the PM while speaking about Operation Sindoor, India's military strikes against terror camps in Pakistan and PoK (Pakistan Occupied Kashmir), said the Opposition scored a self goal by seeking a discussion on the issue in Parliament. 'The PM said the Opposition must be ruing its decision to force a discussion… he said he was standing there to defend the country and even the gods gave their support to him,' said a party leader, speaking on condition of anonymity. A special discussion on the operation took place in both Houses of Parliament, with the PM speaking on the issue in the Lok Sabha on July 29. In the Rajya Sabha, the Opposition walked out in protest against the PM's absence when the government fielded Union home minister Amit Shah to speak on the issue. 'His unwavering resolve, visionary statesmanship and resolute command have not only steered the nation with purpose but also ignited a renewed spirit of unity and pride in the hearts of all Indians,' it said. Operation Sindoor was executed in response to April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which India said was perpetrated by Pakistan-based terrorist group, The Resistance Front (TRF), a front and proxy of the Lashkar-e-Taiba. The attack left 26 dead. 'If there is a terrorist attack on India, a fitting reply will be given. We will give a befitting response on our terms only… Secondly, India will not tolerate any nuclear blackmail. India will strike precisely and decisively at the terrorist hideouts developing under the cover of nuclear blackmail…Thirdly, we will not differentiate between the government sponsoring terrorism and the masterminds of terrorism,' the resolution noted, highlighting the new normal in dealing with the issue. A reference was also made to the government's focus on indigenisation of defence capabilities and to the diplomatic outreach that was launched after the operation.

A day after the Supreme Court censured Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi over his alleged remarks against the Army in the wake of the 2020 Galwan clash with the Chinese, saying, 'If you are a true Indian, you would not say all these things', Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi and the INDIA bloc parties Tuesday rallied behind him, asserting it is not up to the judges to decide who is a 'true Indian'. Speaking to reporters in the Parliament complex, Priyanka said that as the LoP, Rahul was doing his duty to ask questions of the government. 'Who is a true Indian and who is not. With all due respect, I am saying that this doesn't fall under the judiciary's ambit. No justice will decide this. The second is that Rahul Gandhi has always respected the Army, the forces and its officers… The LOP's duty is to ask questions of the government. He is doing his duty. He asks questions of the government, which doesn't like them and doesn't want to answer those questions,' she said. Congress general secretary organisation K C Venugopal said Rahul Gandhi's remarks are the thoughts of every Indian. 'When we ask questions inside the House or outside, they (the government) do not answer. We are termed anti-national for asking questions. But we are the true Indians who demand answers,' he told reporters in the Parliament House complex. The issue of the court's observation was also discussed during a meeting of the INDIA bloc floor leaders on Tuesday, after which the Congress said 'all the leaders of the INDIA bloc parties agreed that the sitting judge has made an extraordinary observation which is unwarranted on the democratic rights of political parties'. Asked about impasse in Parliament over opposition demand for a debate on the electoral roll revision, Vadra put the blame on the government. 'The Parliament is not functioning. They (government) should hold talks, and say they will have a discussion. How difficult is it to run Parliament? Have they become so weak that they can't run the House? … It is their failure that the Parliament is not functioning.'
